    My 2012 List (Part 11)

    Posted on 02/24/13 05:00 PM | Last edited on 02/24/13 05:00 PM

Today is the day that the Oscars are given out. But it's also the day that I post my Top 10 of 2012. So without further ado, here are the films that I thought were the best of the year.

    10. Argo (10/10)

Though he started off as a mediocre actor, Ben Affleck has come a really long way since he has shown that he can really direct. He has had two really good movies before this: Gone Baby Gone, which was a pretty thought-provoking film, and the crime drama The Town which Ben Affleck also starred in alongside Jeremy Renner (who received an Oscar nomination for that movie). This was no different. The acting was really good to excellent, particularly from Alan Arkin who gives a catchy quote (Argo f*** yourself).

    9. Skyfall (10/10)

    Skyfall (2012) Poster

Though I wasn't too familiar with James Bond and only saw six of his movies, including Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, I went to see this when I saw the excellent reviews it had been getting and that many were calling it "the best Bond film in years." This movie was awesome. This was James Bond at his best and Daniel Craig has fully embraced the role. Daniel Craig and Judi Dench really know how to work together that you believe that their characters act like mother and son to each other. The villain, played Javier Bardem, also gives a really good performance. The action scenes were the best that I've seen in a Bond film, particularly with the final explosive battle towards the end of the movie. After watching all 23 of the Bond movies, I can honestly say that this was the best James Bond movie.

    8. Looper (10/10)

After seeing the excellent reviews it had been getting, I decided to go see this. And man was this a great movie. This is the best movie with time travel since Back to the Future. The performances were really good. Joseph Gordon-Levitt does a really good performance as Joe Simmons. Bruce Willis also stars as Joe's future self which I think is one of his best performances in a long time, right up there with Die Hard, Pulp Fiction, The Sixth Sense and Sin City. The kid in this movie was also really good. If you want a really good sci-fi film that isn't a mindless action flick, then check this out.

    7. The Dark Knight Rises (10/10)

Anyone who has known me long enough would know that this movie would make my Top 10. This was my most highly awaited movie of the year. This, along with a pre-screening of its two preceding films, were the first movies that I got to see in IMAX. I had been keeping up with any news that came out up until the movie's release. By the time this started to show up on the big screen, I had reach unbelievable levels of excitement. And in the end, this movie did not disappoint.  Was this as great as The Dark Knight? Well, no, but I thought that it was great in its own right. The actors all bring in their A-game. Christian Bale and Michael Caine give their best performances out of the three, with Bale even possibly rivaling Michael Keaton. Tom Hardy as Bane didn't have the "wow" factor as Heath Ledger's Joker, but he was still a pretty good villain. Joseph Gordon-Levitt also gives a really good performance as Detective John Blake. While this wasn't as action-packed as The Dark Knight and Batman wasn't in it as much, the action scenes in this were pretty good. This also goes more into Bruce Wayne's character. Christopher Nolan has managed to prove that even superhero threequels aren't always big disappointments and ends his trilogy on a high note. Another reboot will be made for the delayed Justice League movie, but after seeing Nolan's interpretation and also how he is depicted in Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, I'll never look at Batman the same way again.

But while this was arguably the most highly awaited movie of the year, it is also the most tainted with the memory of a psycopath who murdered several innocent people in Aurora, Colorado at the movie's midnight premiere. R.I.P. those who were killed and my heart goes out to those who were injured and the families and friends who were affected by this atrocity.

    6. The Perks of Being a Wallflower (10/10)

A lime green wall with the words 'we are infinite', a boy stands beside a girl, she leans her head on the shoulder of another boy.

This was an excellent movie about life during high school. The three leads give excellent performances and I was able to look at Emma Watson without thinking of Hermione Granger (the short haircut helps, too). I was really able to believe that the three were the best of friends. If you're looking for a good movie about high school or a heartwarming story, then I suggest renting this.

    5. The Impossible (10/10)

    The Impossible (2012) Poster

The Impossible was a really powerful movie about the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the effect it had on the victims. Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor gave excellent performances and I will admit that I cried plenty of times during this movie. This is a disaster movie that doesn't go anywhere near the routes taken by the ones done by Roland Emmerich and Michael Bay. This is one that while a disaster movie, it doesn't forget about its characters.

    4. Silver Linings Playbook (10/10)

Seeing that Bradley Cooper and rising star Jennifer Lawrence were in this, I had interest in seeing this. But this was kept in limited release and didn't come to our local theater until mid-Jan. So I went to see it, and I was really impressed with it. The cast was spot on with Cooper and Lawrence along with the supporting cast of Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver, and Chris Tucker. Cooper and Lawrence had excellent chemistry and Jennifer Lawrence has a pretty good chance at winning the Best Actress Oscar (her second nomination after Winter's Bone), though she'll be having hard competition against the likes of Jessica Chastain, Emmanuelle Riva and Naomi Watts. Silver Linings Playbook, to put it simply, is the feel good movie of the year.

    3. Zero Dark Thirty (10/10)

I've been hearing about a movie having to do about Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks, at about around the time that he was killed in May 2011. At first I thought it would be about his life all the way up to his death, but this was about the hunt for him. There had been plenty of controversy over its alleged pro-torture message. I don't believe that it glorifies torture but it is there to show what it took to hunt him down. Leaving that out would have sanitized the efforts made by the characters. Jessica Chastain gives an excellent performance as the lead character and the rest of the cast was also really good.

    2. Lincoln (10/10)

This will probably be the biggest Oscar winner for 2012. Abraham Lincoln is one of the best presidents to have led the US. Danny Day-Lewis was amazing as the title character and I belive that it's obvious that he will win the Best Actor Oscar. This historical movie isn't anything new for director Steven Spielberg as he did direct Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan. The rest of the actors also give excellent performance, particularly Tommy Lee Jones, who has some of the most wittiest lines in the movie. Out of all the Best Picture nominations, this will probably be the winner. But there was one movie that I liked better than this from 2012.

And my NUMBER 1 movie of the year is............(drum roll)

    1. Django Unchained (10/10)

This was just an awesome movie. Quentun Tarantina is an excellent director who knows how to perfectly utilize a good story and style. The actors in this give excellent performances and the chemistry between Jamie Foxx and Christopher Waltz (who has a pretty good chance at winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar) was excellent as well. The shoot out scenes were very fun to watch, especially the shoot out in Calvin J. Candie's mansion and the final scenes of the movie.

Quite the great selection for a top ten list. Haven't seen The Perks of Being a Wallflower, but I'm hoping it's as good as you say. I've enjoyed reading these. May great things come this year too.

Interesting list. I didn't share your enthusiasm for Zero Dark Thirty, The Dark Knight Rises, Lincoln, The Impossible, Looper or Argo, but I loved The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Django Unchained and Skyfall. Have you seen Beasts of the Southern Wild or Sleepwalk with Me? Both are indie films which are on my top 10.

Great list. Those are some of my favorite films of the year. I disagree with your statement that Affleck started out as a mediocre actor. I'm not sure if you've seen Good Will Hunting, but he is very strong in that film. Here is a link to his best scene. Far more than mediocre if you ask me. http://youtu.be/fpnFFHxg5a0

    My 2012 List (Part 10)

    Posted on 02/23/13 07:14 PM | Last edited on 02/23/13 07:14 PM

UPDATES (realized I forgot to put these two in the list):

#102: Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (3/10) (See Part 2)

    #50: John Carter (7/10) (See Part 7)

    HONORABLE MENTIONS:

    20. The Secret World of Arrietty (9/10)

The Secret World of Arrietty (2010) Poster

This was the first 2012 movie that I got to see in theaters (though it was released in Japan in July 2010). I thought that it was a really good movie. I haven't seen all of Studio Ghibli's movies, only Kiki's Delivery Service and Spirited Away, but both I haven't seen since before I became a teenager. Anyways, the animation was really good and I really liked the characters. My most favorite character would have to be Haru. Whenever she was on the screen, I couldn't help but smile (and I loved the way she says "There you are!"). This was a fine piece of animation and is definitely worth seeing if you love Studio Ghibli and animated movies in general.

    19. Moonrise Kingdom (9/10)

I'm not familiar with Wes Anderson's work, but I loved his stop motion feature, Fantastic Mr. Fox. Based on that, I rented this and I thought that it was really good. The characters were fun to watch and it had a pretty good cast. I had some problems with the exploring sexuality parts due to the two characters' being pre-teens, but besides that, this was really good.

    18. The Session (9/10)

This was a heartwarming movie about a disabled man, who despite his polio, sees the good side of things and does what he can with what he has. John Hawkes plays Mark O'Brien with a strong sense of childlike innocence like Tom Hanks did with Forrest Gump. Helen Hunt gives an excellent performance as Cheryl Cohen-Greene and deserved her Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress (though she'll probably lose to Anne Hathaway). William H. Macy also gives a really good performance.

    17. Sinister (9/10)

Finally, a horror movie that is truly a horror movie. This was a really scary movie. This is much more like the old classics that most people love of the horror genre and is probably the best horror movie in more recent times. After watching this, I didn't want to be in the dark after seeing it. A reaction like that really says something. The demon that is responsible is barely visible throughout the movie, but that made him much more scary. Unlike plenty of the villains in the past, this one posed an actual threat and it gives you good reason to be terrified. The demon, known as Bughuul, kills his victims in a disturbing, and sometimes even brutal, fasion like drowning them in a pool or running them over with a lawn mower (though not graphically shown). It's all about presence. The actors in this movie also give really good performances and don't act like the stereotypical characters we usually see. If you're looking for a movie that will scare you or even send chills down your spine, this is the movie for you.

    16. Beasts of the Southern Wild (9/10)

The story was really good and the craft put into this is very impressive. Quvenzhane Wallis, at the age of 9, is the youngest person to get nominated for the Best Actress Oscar. Will she win? Against the four she's competing against, that's unlikely. But the fact that she was nominated at such a young age is saying a lot. I sense a very bright future for her and hope that she continues to bring in great performances.

    15. Life of Pi (9/10)

    Life of Pi (2012) Poster

Life of Pi was a beautiful film. While the movie did get somewhat boring at some points (it's about a man and a tiger lost at sea, what do you expect?), on a visual level, this movie was a masterpiece. The visuals were very colorful and even the animals in this looked realistic. The actors are also really good, too. This easily beats out Prometheus and Cloud Atlas for the most visually beautiful film of the year.

    14. ParaNorman (10/10)

This was The Nightmare Before Christmas meets The Sixth Sense. The characters were a great pleasure to watch and the stop motion animation was excellent. These are probably the best visuals of a stop motion animated feature since The Nightmare Before Christmas. If you love stop motion, then try this movie out.

    13. Wreck-It Ralph (10/10)

Theatrical release poster depicting the protagonist, Ralph, along with various video-game characters

As someone who grew up with video games, this movie was a great pleasure to watch. The characters are very fun to watch and it can also be funny while also having its dramatic moments. The animation is great and the voice acting is also really good. This was the best animated feature of 2012 (and I hope it wins the Best Animated Feature Oscar) and I'll probably go buy it the day it comes out (March 5th).

    12. Les Miserables (10/10)

The poster shows a young girl, played by Isabelle Allen, in the background of a dark night. Text above reveals the cast listing and text below reveals the film's title.

I'm not that much into musicals but I did like some like Grease, Moulin Rouge! and some of the Disney classics. This was a pleasure to watch. At first having more than 90% of the dialogue being done in song did get slightly (only slightly) annoying, I eventually got used to it and enjoyed listening to the vocals. The acting is also really good to excellent and I think that Anne Hathaway will win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Anne Hathaway has come a really long way in her acting career with the releases of this and The Dark Knight Rises, and I hope that she continues to give us these kind of performances. The production and costume designs are also excellent and will probably win it the Oscars for those two categories. If you love musicals and don't mind sitting through a long sitting time, you'll probably enjoy this.

    11. The Avengers (10/10)

The Avengers is fanboy galore at its best! For four years and five movies we had been waiting for this and it lived up to the hype. This is easily one of the best action movies of the year and tons of fun. I even went to see this four times when it was in theaters. But it also doesn't forget about its characters. All of the actors in this movie give really good performances, though nothing Oscar worthy. And Mark Ruffalo is the best of the three actors (after Eric Bana in the somewhat underrated 2003 Hulk and Edward Norton in The Incredible Hulk) to play Bruce Banner despite my initail feelings that Norton was better. This was the best Marvel comic book film since Spider-Man 2 and I highly await the sequel coming in 2015.

    My 2012 List (Part 9)

    Posted on 02/22/13 10:05 AM | Last edited on 02/22/13 10:05 AM

    30. Ted (8/10)

At first I didn't have too much interest in seeing this despite its interesting premise. But with Seth MacFarlane in the title role and seeing the trailers to the movie made me more interested in seeing. And when I saw it, I really liked it. What can you expect from the guy who created Family Guy, one of the most famous animated shows today? Seth MacFarlane does an excellent performance as the pot-smoking teddy bear. Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis also give good performances. And like with many of the good raunchy comedies, this was driven by the "bromance" (which is probably the biggest element of a good raunchy comedy) between John and Ted, who drive this movie while also being pretty funny. This, in my opinion, was probably the best comedy of the year.

    29. Arbitrage (8/10)

The actors do a good job in this movie, with Richard Gene in particular giving a really good performance.

    28. Cloud Atlas (8/10)

This is the love-it-or-hate-it movie of the year. There are those that loved it like Roger Ebert, while others hated it. While this was no masterpiece, it wasn't a disaster either. But it was pretty good. This was the Wachowskis' most ambitious film since The Matrix (one of the best sci-fi movies of all time). The performances were good and the stories were good, but the movie was kind of slow at times and having six stroylines in seperate time periods can be hard to follow. Will this be an unrealized classic that eventually reaches its audience over time like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien, and Blade Runner? In this special effects driven age, that's kind of doubtful. But I certainly see this movie gaining an enormous cult following.

    27. Chronicles (8/10)

Despite the silly premise, this movie was actually really good and one of the better found footage movies to come out. This movie is basically Carrie meets The Blair Witch Project minus the horror element. These three teenagers gain superpowers from this mysterious object. But instead of becoming like the superheroes we know from comic books, they have fun with their powers. I'll admit that if I was given powers like theirs', I would probably play around with them, too. The three actors give good performances and has an exciting climax as Andrew begins to fall into madness with everything bad happening to him.

    26. The Raid: Redemption (8/10)

This was a really good action movie. The action scenes were great with the use of martial arts and the performances were good. But I had some problems with the dialogue not matching up with the mouth movements.

    25. Ruby Sparks (8/10)

A block of text with a blank space forming the outline of a woman. A man carrying a woman over his shoulder.

The chemistry between the two leads was really good and it had some pretty good themes.

    24. The Hunger Games (8/10)

After reading the book sometime before the movie came out, I became excited for it. While the games doesn't start until halfway through the movie, this was a really good movie. The performances were mostly good. Jennifer Lawrence NAILED the role as Katniss Everdeen and I also really liked Woody Harrelson as Haymitch. But Josh Hutcherson was somewhat lacking in his role as Peeta, but Lawrence makes the chemistry work on some level. I'm really looking forward to seeing Catching Fire later this year.

    23. End of Watch (8/10)

    Theatrical release poster

The performances and the chemistry between the two actors was really good and the use of found footage made this look more like real-life. The other characters were also good but there were sometimes when the two cops talking in the cop car became a little boring.

    22. Flight (8/10)

Denzel Washington gives an excellent performance and deserved his Oscar nomination for this. This movie really shows how much his addiction to alcohol and drugs affected him and his career as a pilot and eventually catches up with him when the plane crash happens. This would have been a contender for my top 10 or really high in my honorable mentions if it hadn't been for some of the slow pacing at some points in the first hour and that his relationship with Nicole wasn't somewhat rushed. But for what it was, this was a fine piece of cinema about the negative effects of a dangerous addiction.

    21. Frankenweenie (9/10)

At first I gave this an 8/10 from my theater viewing, but after seeing it again on home video, I have to say that I kind of loved it. This is Tim Burton's most Tim Burton-ish film in a long time. This is one where he has put his heart into it since this and the 1984 short was kind of based on his earlier life. He also did the same thing with Edward Scissorhands which he took inspiration from his teenage years. Not only that, but this is also a homage to older classic horror movies like Frankenstein and Godzilla. The black-and-white vision of the movie also enhances the movie despite being an outdated format. This probably wouldn't have looked as good in color now that I think about it. With a wonderful story between a boy and his dog, this is worth seeing and I look forward to getting this on Blu-Ray once it's available to buy at Family Video.

    My 2012 List (Part 8)

    Posted on 02/21/13 02:36 PM | Last edited on 02/21/13 02:36 PM

    40. The Cabin in the Woods (8/10)

This pretty much does to horror what Scream did for the slasher genre. It not only scares, but it also pokes fun at the horror genre, although the movie does get more serious towards the end. The cast did a really good job and the monsters that were seen in this were really cool.

    39. People Like Us (8/10)

I thought that most of the cast did really good with their roles. The only thing I didn't like was Olivia Wilde and her weak chemistry with Chris Pine.

    38. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (8/10)

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011) Poster

Benefiting from a strong cast, this movie manages to be good despite it's simple plot.

    37. Brave (8/10)

A girl with long, curly red hair stares at the viewer holding a bow and an arrow. Behind her is the film's title while at the left shows a bear staring at her.

This is definitely among Pixar's weakest movie (only ahead of both Cars movies) and could have been a lot better, but for what it was, I liked it and it was an improvement over Cars 2. I just hope that Monsters University goes back to the Pixar we used to know and I'm really looking forward to The Good Dinosaur coming in 2014.

    36. 21 Jump Street (8/10)

This was pretty funny and the cast was really good, too.

    35. Prometheus (8/10)

A female figure in silhouette stands before an enormous statue of a humanoid head. Text at the middle of the poster reveals the tagline "The Search For Our Beginning Could Lead To Our End". Text at the bottom of the poster reveals the title, production credits and rating.

This is often considered the most disappointing film of 2012 (or The Hobbit). I was really excited to see Ridley Scott coming back to a franchise that he started. After seeing the disappointing reviews it had been getting on IMDB, I lowered my expectations. While this movie did not live up to it's full potential, with underdeveloped characters being a problem, the movie was good. The visuals were excellent and it benefited from strong performances from Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender. As much as many were disappointed with it, it's much better than getting a third AVP movie that probably would have sucked harder than AVP: Requiem.

    34. Killer Joe (8/10)

Killer Joe had some really good performances and was also at times funny and disturbing. But the ending kind of let me down since it didn't really give closure.

    33. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (8/10)

After something as sensational as The Lord of the Rings, it was saddening that this wasn't one of the best films of the year. While the Hobbit is still good, it's not great. The cast was good. With some of the original cast returning (it's good to see Gandalf and Gollum again) and Martin Freeman was really good as a younger Bilbo Baggins. I also liked Richard Armitage as Thorin, but Radagast the Brown did somewhat annoy me and the movie could have done without him (though the addition of the Necromancer was good). While the visuals are still good, they aren't phenomenal like in The Lord of the Rings because in those movies, they also had people in makeup and costumes that made them look much more real. Here, they're mostly done on computer and you can really tell. I'm still looking forward to seeing The Desolation of Smaug, but I'm pretty skeptic about this being turned into a trilogy since it would have done just fine with just two movies. But, here's hoping.

    32. The Amazing Spider-Man (8/10)

Spider-Man, wounded, is covered in a spider web with New York City in the background and as a reflection in his mask. Text at the bottom of the reveals the title, release date, official site of the film, rating and production credits.

When I first heard that Spider-Man was being rebooted in January 2010, I was pretty upset and was even more angry when the then unknown Andrew Garfield was casted as the title character. But after seeing him in The Social Network and the trailers leading up to this movie's release, I became more optimistic. So I hit the theater on opening day with a grain of salt. I wasn't expecting an awesome time like with The Avengers nor was I expecting it to be as good as The Dark Knight Rises was likely to be, but I had hopes. I came out rather happy. And this movie grew on me over time. Andrew Garfield NAILED the role of the character and easily surpassed Tobey Maguire. And his chemistry with Emma Stone was great (I initially said in my review that they weren't as good as Tobey and Kirsten Dunst, but now that this grew on me and I look at both of them, Andrew and Emma make them almost look like Bella and Edward. That's right, I said it). They are a great couple, both in the movie and real life. It'll be a sad day when Gwen Stacy has to die (almost everyone knows what happens to her in the comics). The Lizard wasn't quite as good as Doc Ock and was more on par with Green Goblin, but he was the Joker compared to Spider-Man 3's Venom. The rest of the cast had all surpassed their predecessors in their roles except for Sally Field as Auny May (Rosemary Harris was better). With how this turned out, I look forward to seeing the webslinger again on the big screen in May 2014.

    31. Seven Psychopaths (8/10)

    Seven Psychopaths (2012) Poster

The cast did really good, particularly Christopher Walken, and it was pretty funny and brilliant.

I hated Prometheus and the poorly written plot kept creating more and more plot holes. Then again, this is the same guy who likes The Dark Knight Rises with it flaws. 21 Jump Street was easily the best comedy of last year (at least for me). Also enjoyed the smart Cabin In the Woods and the The Amazing Spider Man was great too.

I had a problem with Prometheus as well. Although the movie was decent, it seemed to me that it wasn't sure if it wanted to be the prequel to Alien or a stand alone movie. I think I would've enjoyed it better knowing it was a direct prequel to one of my favorite franchises. Besides that, your list, once again, is dead on. Can't wait to see the next one!

Being an enormous Spider-Man fan, I kinda, almost hate Amazing Spider-Man. I mean, it has it's merits, but it doesn't come close, in terms of tone, and simply representing the iconic character, to what Raimi accomplished. I know I must sound like a broken record if you were to know my opinions on Spider-Man, but I always find myself surprised when people claim that ASM blows the originals out of the water.

I didn't like it as much as the first two and it wasn't as entertaining, but it was loads better than Spider-Man 3 and with the direction that Spider-Man 4 was taking, it would have been best if Spider-Man had been rebooted.

    51. Pitch Perfect (7/10)

The songs are good and I liked Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson, but this isn't for everyone.

    50. John Carter (7/10)

    John Carter (2012) Poster

This is considered the most disappointing film of the year in terms of box office revenues. After looking up about the books that this was based on and the inspiration they had on numerous sci-fi classics, I became interested in seeing this. We got to see it when we went to a drive-in in June which had a showing of The Avengers (my fourth time seeing it at that time) before this movie. Since I loved The Avengers and I was wanting to watch this, I had no arguments against watching The Avengers again. When I saw it at the drive-in, I was kind of underwhelmed. But watching it at a drive-in over a radio as opposed to stereos in a theater made the experience not quite as good. So my Mom rented this from Redbox on my request to watch it again. I found that this may not be the masterpiece it could have been, but for what it was, I thought it was a decent sci-fi flick. A lot people would call this "Prince of Persia in space." While it does look like that considering the media today, I would say that this is actually a movie that missed its time a long time ago. If this had come out before Star Wars, it probably would have been hailed as a classic. Will this eventually become a classic? In this time where plenty of movies are driven by special effects, I doubt it. But it may gain its own cult following and may become more accepting among audiences when they hear about the books they were based on (though I have yet to read them myself).

    49. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (7/10)

This was the best of the three movies and the flashy circus scene alone was worth the price of admission.

    48. Dredd 3-D (7/10)

A futuristic police officer in armour and a helmet that covers all but his mouth stands on the corner of a building roof with a gun in his hand as large tower blocks burn behind him. Above the man reads a tagline

Karl Urban gives a really good performance as Dredd, the action was really good, and the 3-D was cool (for once), but the villain was kind of weak since all she pretty much does is give orders (but she had a cool death scene).

    47. The Expendables 2 (7/10)

Movie poster with vehicles on fire and a soldier aiming a handgun

This was more of the action movie that we should have got in 2010 and the action in it was pretty darn good and the action star were really good.

    46. Men in Black III (7/10)

Not quite as good as the first, but this was Die Hard compared to the first sequel. Will Smith goes back nicely into one of his most famous roles and Josh Brolin gives an excellent performance as a younger Agent K (he alone makes this worthwhile).

    45. Hope Springs (7/10)

It benefits strongly from the three leads, but it isn't anything great, though.

    44. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (7/10)

Good performances and chemistry between Steve Carell and Keira Knightley and it doesn't go for the cliche happy ending, but nothing marvelous.

    43. The Grey (7/10)

Good performances from the cast (particularly Liam Neeson) and some scary scenes, but is somewhat lacking in some areas.

    42. Lawless (7/10)

A really good cast (and one of Shia LaBeouf's better performances), except for Mia Wasikowska, and the action was good, but could have been a little better.

    41. Premium Rush (7/10)

Some really good performances, particularly Joseph Gordon-Levitt, but the plot was kind of simple.

Pitch Perfect was a pleasant surprise. I ended up liking it more than I expected. Dredd was a stellar remake, though the action scenes wore standard stuff. Also liked The Expendables 2 (though slightly less than you) and Man In Black 3 was a fitting way to end the series on a good note.

    61. Ice Age: Continental Drift (6/10)

This might arguably be the weakest of the Ice Age movies (trying to decide between this and Dawn of the Dinosaurs), but the voice acting was decent, the animation at its best of the series, and I liked a few of the new characters (particularly Sid's grandma).

    60. Hotel Transylvania (6/10)

There's some decent voice acting, pretty good animation, and the chemistry between Dracula and his daughter was decent, plus one really funny joke about Twilight towards the end, but this is more for children than adults.

    59. The Woman in Black (6/10)

Daniel Radcliffe does a decent performance and the settings are nice, but there aren't that many scares.

    58. Won't Back Down (6/10)

With good performances from Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis, this movie is worth watching, but besides that, there isn't much worthwhile.

    57. Think Like a Man (6/10)

There are some good performances and good chemistry between the couples, but this is not for everyone.

    56. Dr. Seuss' The Lorax (6/10)

The animation is really good, was fun to watch and Danny DeVito was a really good Lorax, but he wasn't in it that much.

    55. Anna Karenina (6/10)

This had good performances from Keira Knightley and Jude Law and the production and costume designs were excellent, but most of the other characters were uninteresting. But the way it looks and the two actors in the movie alone make it worthwhile.

    54. Magic Mike (6/10)

This had good performances from the lead actors, but this isn't my kind of movie.

    53. The Pirates! Band of Misfits (7/10)

The stop-motion is good and the voice acting decent, but the story was too simple for my liking.

    52. Savages (7/10)

This had some pretty good acting, but not something to marvel about.

    71. Haywire (5/10)

It had some decent performances from Gina Carao, Michael Fassbender, and Ewan McGregor, but the movie was kind of boring.

    70. Safe (5/10)

Jason Statham and the little girl give good performances and the action scenes are well done, but that's about it.

    69. Snow White and the Huntsman (5/10)

The production designs and visuals are nice and Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron do good performances, but Kristen Stewart is not the "fairest of them all," both acting wise and physically.

    68. The Words (5/10)

It benefits from it's cast, but it's not all that interesting.

    67. The Bourne Legacy (5/10)

While Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton do what they can, this isn't a true "Bourne" movie and Matt Damon's presence is missed.

    66. The Campaign (5/10)

It was fun to see Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis going at each other and it had some outside laughs, but most of the humor outside those two fighting wasn't all that funny.

    65. Trouble with the Curve

Clint Eastwood and Amy Adams give good performances and share good chemistry, but they are pretty much the ones carrying the movie.

    64. Taken 2 (5/10)

I know, I know, plenty of people didn't like this. I had low expectations and I didn't think it was that bad. The performances were for the most part decent, but not as thrilling as the first movie.

    63. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II

This bland franchise actually manages to end a semi-decent note. The final battle was pretty fun (but one certain twist killed it for me) and the acting was a little better than the previous installments, but still not that good enough.

    62. Rock of Ages (6/10)

This was a mildly entertaining musical with a particularly good performance from Tom Cruise, but it's not as good as two musicals coming up on this list.

I thought Taken 2 was a waste of talent and boring compared to the first one. I don't understand how someone who kept flunking driver's training was able to drive a car with manual transmission like a racecar driver down the narrow streets (ok she did hit a few cars long the way). Rock of Ages was entertaining but not a favorite of mine. I agree with you with Breaking Dawn part 2. It had me going until the sudden twist, which did kill it for me.

    82. Wrath of the Titans (4/10)

This was better than the disappointing Clash of the Titans remake, but that's not saying much. I liked Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes and Sam Worthington was better utilized here, but there's no Kraken (one of the few good things about the remake) and the other characters are kind of bland.

    81. Man on a Ledge (4/10)

An interesting concept and the two leads do fine with what they had to work with, but some of the things in this sounded preposterous.

    80. Wanderlust (4/10)

There was some chemistry between the characters, but it wasn't really funny.

    79. Act of Valor (5/10)

While some of the action scenes were fine, some of the performances were lacking, but not too bad.

    78. The Man with the Iron Fists (5/10)

The movie has style and the action scenes were pretty well shot, but it's just a "style over substance" flick.

    77. Dark Shadows

Some parts are funny, Johnny Depp does fine and Tim Burton's visual style is always nice to see, but this was probably his weakest I've seen from him since the Planet of the Apes remake (haven't seen Mars Attacks!)

    76. Cosmopolis (5/10)

Robert Pattinson and some of the other actors give some effort and the movie deals with some interesting subjects, but the pacing is really drawn out and can be boring at times.

    75. Safe House (5/10)

Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds do decent jobs, but there isn't that muchto get excited about.

    74. Contraband (5/10)

Most of the cast does good, but that's about it.

    73. The Dictator (5/10)

It had some good laughs (and a laugh out loud fight between the main character and a LARGE breasted woman) and Sacha Baron Cohen gives a good performance, but it ran short of being really funny.

    72. Red Tails (5/10)

The flight scenes are really good and the cast had some decent chemistry, but that's about it.

    93. Paranormal Activity 4 (3/10)

The good news is that as a supernatural movie, it's not as bad as The Devil Inside and The Apparition. The bad news is that it's still not scary. I don't think much of the first two movies (though I like to watch them from time to time), but I thought that the third one was actually scary (particularly the last 10 minutes). This was the worst of the four. ...The only things I liked were the X-Box green stuff in the dark and the little kids in it. I also don't understand why they brought in people who had absolutely nothing to do with the previous three. For the next movie, they should bring back some of the characters from the second and third films.

    92. To Rome with Love (3/10)

They had a decent cast here, but this wasn't a good movie. I liked the chemistry between Ellen Page and Jesse Eisenberg, but Penelope Cruz was wasted in this.

    91. Resident Evil: Retribution

This was the most entertaining of the bland franchise, but that's not saying much.

    90. The Lucky One (4/10)

While there was some semi-decent acting Taylor Schilling and Blythe Danner, the other characters were rather bland and the two leads lacked chemistry.

    89. The Vow (4/10)

A man and woman embracing, side view.

While Rachel McAdams, Channing Tatum and Sam Niell do what they can, this isn't my kind of movie.

    88. The Odd Life of Timothy Green (4/10)

There is some good chemistry between the three leads, but besides that, this movie relies too much on sentimentality.

    87. Chernobyl Diaries (4/10)

This had an interesting premise of being in a radioactive tourist spot. There were a few jump scares and a little suspense, but the acting wasn't that good and the ending was pretty lame.

    86. Mirror Mirror (4/10)

The production and costume designs are pretty impressive (definitely deserves its Oscar nomination), Julianna Moore does a good performance as the evil queen, and the Snow White in this is better than the one played by Kristen Stewart, but the humor fell flat on its face.

    85. The Possesion (4/10)

Despite some good performances from the father and the possessed girl, it isn't scary.

    84. V/H/S (4/10)

Some of the stories are interesting and one of the girls looked really creepy, but the characters weren't.

    83. Total Recall remake (4/10)

Now I thought that the original was a good action flick, but not a classic. But did they need to make a remake? While the special effects were adequate, Kate Beckinsale does good with what she has to work with, some decently shot action scenes, and a three-breasted woman, this didn't have much to offer.

    My 2012 List (Part 2)

    Posted on 02/16/13 06:21 PM | Last edited on 02/16/13 06:21 PM

    Dishonorable Mentions:

    103. SIlent Hill: Revelation (3/10)

Did they need to make a sequel to the Silent Hill movie? While the first Silent Hill movie was visually striking and I liked Alice Krige's performance as the cult leader, the first movie was mediocre and making a sequel would just be a cash grab. While I don't think that the movie was outright terrible, it wasn't good.

    102. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengenace (3/10)

While this was a little more bearable than the first Ghost Rider due to its shorter lenght, they should have rebooted instead of making this.

    101. Deadfall (3/10)

The only good things about this are Eric Bana and Sissy Spacek.

    100. Hit & Run (3/10)

Another unfunny comedy. Bradley Cooper looked bored to be there and the cast wasn't really good. Dax Shepard was OK in this, but that's it.

    99. That's My Boy (3/10)

Adam Sandler has become the butt of everyone's joke these days. I haven't seen Jack and Jill, but even so, this was a bad movie. But it wasn't quite as bad that I was expecting it to be. It's not good, but I thought there was a little bit of chemistry between him and Andy Samberg and some of their scenes were somewhat touching. Besides that, though, this wasn't funny except for a few chuckles.

    98. Alex Cross (3/10)

Alex Cross wasn't thrilling and most of the acting was kind of bland. Matthew Fox wasn't very intimidating as the sociopath, which isn't good coming from an actor who played on something as great as Lost. The only redeeming quality of the movie was Tyler Perry, who gives a decent performance in the title role (and no, I haven't seen any of those movies where he's wearing a fat suit).

    97. Battleship (3/10)

This tried to be the next Transformers, but it wasn't that much fun to watch. There wasn't very much blowing stuff up and it was too long with the action too in-between. If this had been a true popcorn flick, this would have been much better. The only things I liked about this were the semi-decent special effects and Liam Neeson, even though he doesn't do much and is just there to get people to see it. The Transformers movies (Revenge of the Fallen included) were more entertaining than this and I'm glad I went to see The Avengers a third time instead of this (the same goes for Dark Shadows when I went to see The Avengers a second time).

    96. This Means War (3/10)

The only good things about this are Chris Pine and Tom Hardy going at each other, everything else, not so good.

    95. The Three Stooges (3/10)

I'm not familiar with the old show that this is based on, but I didn't like this movie. There was some decent chemistry between the three leads, but it was another unfunny comedy.

    94. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (3/10)

The special effects in this were bad, the makeup looked fake on the vampires, and the action scenes were generic. The only positive thing about this movie was Benjamin Walker as Lincoln, though he's got nothing on Danny-Day Lewis.

Ouch. Cosmopolis sounds boring and I don't think I could ever sit through something like that. You certainly seen quite the list of awful junk this year.

I disagree on ''The Tree Stooges''. I grew up watching the original sitcom, and when compared to awful film adaptations such as those of ''The Flintstones'', the ''Three Stooges'' movie was surprisingly faithful and solidly good. If episodic and unnecesarily modern, the acting was superb, and script was just as surreal as the originals intended. As for ''Silent Hill 2'', I felt that movie was cute when compared to the horror genius of its video game source.

As always, I enjoy reading your reviews and I really like the list you have created. I still would like to see Silent Hill but now I know what I'm getting myself into. I thought Abe Lincoln: VH was entertaining for what it's worth and Battleship wasn't too bad (yeah it really could have been better). Tyler Perry was perfect for the role of Alex Cross but the movie sucked. I have yet to see Paranormal Activity 4, Hit and Run, and Three Stooges. I will pass of That's My Boy.

I never saw the others except #93. I thought it was epic although it wasn't a near masterpiece.
