Movies based on video games usually don't turn out very good (the Resident Evil movies in particular). But making a movie that revolves around video game characters, now that's a different story. Pretty much almost everyone in the whole world has played video games at one point. I myself was a huge gamer. I've been playing games ever since I was only a kid. It eventually became a big part of my life, that is until I started to get more into cinema. I still play video games now, but I'm not quite the big gamer I used to be.

Wreck-It Ralph is a homage to the old arcade games going back as far as Pac Man. This was before game systems like the Playstation 3 and X-Box 360 that most would play today existed. Not just arcade games themselves, but a homage to all kinds of games in general. This is also probably the best animated film of the year since The Secret World of Arrietty, which is not something that I would say lightly.

The story is basically Toy Story meets Despicable Me/Megamind. The main character is "Wreck-It" Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly), who is the villain of the video game Fix-It Felix, Jr., which is much like the arcade game with Mario and Donkey Kong (before he became a good character). Ralph wrecks the building, and Fix-It Felix (voiced by Jack McBrayer) must fix the building and stop Wreck-It Ralph.

But after 30 years of being the bad guy, Ralph starts to become tired of his lot in life. But in order for people to like him, he needs to win a medal since Fix-It Felix gets a medal when he wins the game. Ralph sneaks into the "Hero's Duty" first-person shooting game, which is led by Sgt. Tamora Jean Calhoun (voiced by Jane Lynch). But he soon finds himself in Sugar Rush, a racing game surrounded by a candy-filled land. He meets Vanellope von Schweetz (voiced by Sarah Silverman), a 9-year old girl who is able to do glitches. She steals his medal, which she plans to use to enter the race since King Candy (voiced by Alan Tudyk) won't let her in the race.

But when Fix-It Felix, Jr. is about to be unplugged because of Ralph's absence, Felix leaves his game to find Ralph. He discovers from Sgt. Calhoun that one of the cy-bugs from Hero's Duty got into Sugar Rush. As a virus, it can spread and cause the world to be destroyed. With this threat, the characters must stop it.

The story isn't anything new. It was done in Despicable Me and Megamind. But Wreck-It Ralph did a better job with the hero-turned villian storyline. Not just that, but the characters are also much more entertaining to watch. The best parts usually involved the friendship between Ralph and Vanellope. The animation is top notch and even looks like a Pixar movie.

There is also plenty of heart to be had, much like Frankenweenie did. Out of all of Disney's CGI animated features, this one was their best by far. One could even mistake it for a Pixar film. It felt more like one than Brave did.

The characters are just wonderful. Wreck-It Ralph made a really good character. Vanellope is adorable and her friendship with Ralph is what gives the movie most of its heart. Fix-It Felix was pretty funny. Sgt. Calhoun was just awesome and I loved every scene she was in. There is more to King Candy than meets the eye. All of the other characters are also really fun to watch, but not as much as the main characters. There are also even cameos from well known characters like Sonic the Hedgehog, Bowser and Pac Man.

Best animated film I've seen all year.

Very nice review. I've heard some great things about this movie. It seems to find a way to be original, even if it has a somewhat familiar story.

I too was huge into video games, but grew more interest into movies. I am disappointed to find out that no current video game character are present, would have like to see Solid Snake in it. First time I read that Disney made a film better than Pixar. Will check it out for my fondness of video games. Nicely written!

Just because Disney had one excellent CGI animated movie does not mean they are better than Pixar. So far, Pixar has never made a bad film (Cars 2 included, IMO), while Disney did have their shortcomings.

I never said that Disney is better than Pixar. You did say "One could even mistake it for a Pixar film. It felt more like one than Brave did." which is the first time I've read in any review on this film. I do think Pixar is better for it strong plots and character. Disney not as much praise. Could have worded my comment better to avoid this minor misunderstanding.

That's all right. I figured it was either what I said or when compared to Brave.
