    The Usual Suspects (1995)
    Genre:
    Mystery & Suspense
    90%

    Posted on 2/26/11 07:10 AM

The Usual Suspects is not your ordinary cops and robbers flick. The story is told in a unique way, mainly using flashbacks and voiceovers. This gives the film a realistic feel and its complicated plot will keep you guessing until the credits roll. Aside from the story, this film contains strong performances and brilliant direction from Bryan Singer (who later achieves box-office success with the X-Men film franchise). I recommend this film to anyone looking for a great suspence film that also requires a fair bit of thought. In my opinion, The Usual Suspects is near perfection and one of the greatest films of the 90's.

    The Town (2010)
    Genre:
    Drama
    80%

    Posted on 2/26/11 07:10 AM

With a few exceptions, 2010 hasn't been a great year for movies. The Town on the other hand, changed this trend and will probably be considered as a crime classic in the future. This film succeeds on many levels. Firstly, the acting is top notch, making the characters believable and giving them extra depth. The directing is also very well done, with a gritty and realistic vision of crime in Boston's Charlestown. However, The Town truly stands out with its fantastic storytelling. Drama and action are very well balanced throughout the film and there are even some comedic moments to lighten the mood. I give this film my highest recommendation; truly a modern masterpiece.

No problem, but many of those films weren't released in the U.S. until this year. The Secret in Their Eyes and Lebanon weren't released here until summer 2010, and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was released here in Spring of 2010. Usually date of release in Europe doesn't coincide with release date in U.S.

    Tron Legacy (2010)
    Genre:
    Action & Adventure

    Posted on 12/20/10 08:16 AM

When I went to see this film, I honestly did not know what to expect. The trailers made it look pretty cool but I haven't seen the original and live-action Disney pictures don't exactly have a stellar reputation. In short, my expectations were greatly exceeded.

Tron Legacy is a visual extravaganza whose special effects surpass Avatar's. Yes, I said that. Unlike the wave of mediocre CGI oriented films Hollywood has been producing throughout the years, it is evident that this film has spent a lot of time (and money) to make a vivid, detailed virtual reality. Also, the action scenes were split up with subtle shots of this virtual world allowing the viewer to get the most captivating visual experience.

Unfortunately, this film does have a few flaws. Aside from Jeff Bridges, the rest of the acting was not the greatest. In addition, the story was a little incoherent at times making it difficult for the viewer to follow.

Despite these minor flaws, Tron Legacy is a very enjoyable film and a must-see in theaters. Don't expect a film with an intricate plot and strong character development. Instead accept the film for what it is: a visually stunning action flick, and a damn good one.

Will this be the year where Christopher Nolan finally wins a well-deserved Oscar? Inception, similar to The Dark Knight, had a great deal of hype before its release. Needless to say, I went into the theater with high expectations. This film was very entertaining for its 2.5 hour runtime and had a good balance of action and character/plot development. What separates Inception from any normal action flick is that, aside from being visually stunning, it is also very thought-provoking. Excellent direction, great performances and a mind blowing storyline makes Inception a must see film for any movie fan.

Robocop was a masterpiece. One of Paul Verhoeven's finnest movies behind Totall Recall and Starship Troopers. I loved it. The sequels are an embarrisment to the franchise so I can't reccomend them. This should have been a one movie event or Verhoeven should have directed the other two.

    Schindler's List (1993)
    Genre:
    Drama

    Posted on 7/30/10 05:54 AM

Schindler's List is quite possibly Stephen Spielberg's finest achievement as a filmmaker.

The film tells the story of Nazi industrialist Oskar Schindler and how he saved the lives of over 1000 Jews during the Holocaust. I won't go into too much detail with the plot for those who haven't yet seen this film. One of the film's most prominent technical aspects is its use of black and white. This really gave this film a grim, yet realistic feel which was needed in a film like this. I would also like to mention one of the film's most important scenes: the scene where Schindler first sees a the little girl in the red dress. This red dress (along with a few candles) is the only colour seen in the film. In this writers opinion, this scene is significant because it is when Schindler first becomes aware of the grim reality he is living in. Before this scene, Schindler was primarily allowing many Jews to work for him for personal gain. I won't give too much away but after this scene, Schindler begins to use his money to save as many Jews as he can. This change of Schindler's character suggests that one man does indeed have the power to change the future. The colour of the dress itself also has significance but, to keep this review down to a reasonable length, I won't go into any extra detail.

One last thing I would like to address is John Williams' masterful score. I have never heard a film score as beautiful and as heartbreaking as this.

This is a very important film and, like the horrors of the Holocaust, must not be forgotten.
