Evangelion 2.22: You May (Not) Advance is not a giant robot anime. The plot has to lean on the use of giant robots, but the story is not in the robots, it is in the characters. This is a well known idea among many anime watchers and this is why Evangelion is so good.
That out of the way, Evangelion 2.22 is not like the first in any way. This is a new story that pulls lightly from the television show, and it makes a spectacle. I can not describe how much this movie surprised me and how much I enjoyed it.
There were two items that kept me from enjoying the film to its potential. I had to watch it in subtitles. This is a problem because some of the songs have lyrics which are spelled out during the song. This made it so that I could not tell exactly what was being said. Part of this is also that I was not a fan of the lyrics in the film at all. I prefer epic songs like "Angel of Doom" from the first film with lyrics that have little meaning (chorus singing) and not actual words.
Second I did not like that the film ended on a cliff hanger. This is necessary for the film, and I liked the end, but now I need the third film. Like NOW.
I would recommend this to any anime fan that likes a serious plot and extraordinarily three dimensional characters.
