Great stuff. But, River Kwai is a superb film. Saving Private Ryan would be my #1 mistake.

Top 10 for me, but I don't remember it too well, if I watch it again it may be higher. I was on the fence about 4 and 5, so after I see more films over the summer I may make some changes :)

I agree with all of them except for "Shawshank Redemption" becuase it was too cliche for me after seeing a bunch of prison films that came before it! I really enjoyed "Bad Boys" starring Sean Penn, but is not Oscar calibre just good performances!

Glad you agree with most :D

Totally agree with numeral uno. The Best Years Of Our Lives was fantastic, but It's A Wonderful Life is one of the most important movies ever made.

I'm really glad to see other people feel the same way about that. It's a Wonderful Life is one of the best films I have ever seen, and sometimes I feel it does not get the recognition it deserves.

great blog i agree with goodfellas!!!!!

Pulp Fiction would be my number one mistake, I still need to see Shawshank to make my choice on which film deserved best picture more. Either way, both films probably deserved it more than Forrest Gump. Great blog Matt.
on 4/21/11 at 09:05 AM
Yeah, I cannot say whether Shawshank was better than Pulp Fiction because I have not seen all of it. But Forrest Gump gets a 70 from me. No way did it deserve best picture. Thanks!

good stuff, but i agree with Naseby. the snubbing of Saving Private Ryan was horrible, probably the worst mistake in oscar history
I only remember it being about a 90, but i'll have to see it again as I do not remember the film very well.

Great blog. Sadly, with the exception of GoodFellas, none of these movies got the acclaim they deserved upon their initial release. Critics said Capra had "lost his way" with It's A Wonderful Life, 2001 (like most of Kubrick's films) initially garnered negative reviews, Shawshank was a box office failure, and I can't recall 12 Angry Men having much popularity until recently. I definitely agree with your picks (except Shawshank, I prefer Pulp Fiction but they're both miles better than Forrest Gump).
on 4/21/11 at 09:06 AM
Agreed. It seems that many of the films that are acclaimed and loved today, were not when they originally were released. It's a shame.

This list is profoundly Citizen Kane-less. Nonetheless, I do agree with your take on 2001: Space Odyssey. As much as I love Oliver!, it's definitely not Best Picture material, whilst 2001 is.

Citizen Kane is another that I need to watch again, as I have very little memory of it. Probably will go in my top 20 :D

definitely agree with shawshank and goodfellas :)
Thanks for reading!

Good to see some thought went into that. However, where the hell is TAXI DRIVER, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, and Dr. Strangelove. And PULP FICTION (even over Shawshank). I'd have to have those. Good stuff, Matt.
on 4/20/11 at 08:16 PM
Well Taxi Driver and Saving Private Ryan will be there for my complete version of the list. But I need to re watch Saving Private Ryan, I don't remember it too well. However, I have not seen Dr. Strangelove, and I have only seen part of Pulp Fiction. Which is pretty embarrassing lol.

Um, yes. If you have not seen Pulp Fiction its not really fair to say that Shawshank is better.
on 4/21/11 at 08:54 AM
Well I wasn't trying to say it was better, I was only saying The Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorite movies of all time, and it did not win best picture :)
on 4/21/11 at 08:59 AM
But, my apologies since I did not make that clear in the list.
on 4/21/11 at 10:10 AM
No worries, I meant since they were both nominated for Best Picture in the same year, it seems you picked Shawshank- but have not seen Pulp Fiction. Good discussion.

Some pretty good choices. If I may offer some: The Truman Show, Pulp Fiction, Pan's Labyrinth, Dr. Strangelove.
Oh wow I completely forgot about Pan's Labyrinth. It will certainly be in my extended list! The Truman Show was very good as well. Thanks!

Nice stuff. Forest Gump is just overrated. I also agree with you on Goodfellas

Awesome pick dude!
Couldn't agree more
Oh..but I vote Pulp Fiction over Shawshank! :)
on 4/21/11 at 04:10 PM
I still havent seen 12 Angry Men or The Bridge Over The River Kwai. As for The Shawshank Redemption i think Pulp Fiction may be a finer picture allthough either of them winning would have been more deserving then Forrest Gump definitely. Goodfellas could have won yea some people don't think of it to be perfect but looks like me and you do. Yea 2001 is on of the greatest of all time i think one of the top 3 ever but i don't think the world was ready for it when it first came out it get's better with time and still looks amazing and is better then all sci-fi's actually more then allmost every film. Havent seen A Wonderful Life, really need too.

Excellent stuff. I completely agree with #'s 4, 3 and 1.

Awesome blog entry and you are right, but still all these movies are winners ;)
