Hoping the film's abysmal box office performance doesn't prevent the prospect of a sequel(s). In any case, this was the best surprise of 2012 in my book, it's already developing a strong cult following and it's stature will continue to grow in the years to come. I remember sitting in the theater and telling my friend next to me, "Why the fuck is 'Dredd' 3D better than 'Prometheus'?! I was half-joking (Prometheus was astonishing visually but wow, what a colossal disappointment) of course, but upon re-watching on dvd the tentative claim was verified. Badass.

Re-watched this one yesterday for the first time in a few years. It remains a slyly subversive and ultra-violent satire of wartime propaganda, well, most of the time at least. The rest of the film is filled with (intentionally, I presume) inane dialogue, cliched "romantic" tropes, wooden acting and a lot of characters I'd generally like to punch in the
Nonetheless, there are several great set-peices, and some of the more overtly satirical scenes have quite an edge still. The creature effects hold up alarmingly well, the spaceship cgi not so much. Nowhere near in the league of Verhoeven's other future-based romps, 'Robocop' or 'Total Recall', but one can definitely imagine it occupying that same kind of cinematic universe, although considerably more kitschy.
Gotta love Verhoeven.
