    Top Ten Dysfunctional Movie Families

    Posted on 04/05/11 04:18 PM | Last edited on 04/05/11 04:18 PM

    Mood:

I don't know about you but my family is pretty dysfunctional, lots of fighting and drama enough to put some kids in therapy!

Yet I some how still love them......kind of .....lol

But hey the families in these movies make my life experiences seem a fairy tale, so please enjoy this crazy list and be greatful your daddy is not Jack Torrence from The Shinning LOL

    10. The Ref

    http://www.kwanzoo.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/ref_502.jpg

As you may have remembered from my review, the Ref is a typical dysfunctional movie family- bickering couple, crazy controlling mother in law, rebellious kid, nevertheless absolutely hilarious!

    9. Home Alone

    http://assets.kaboose.com/media/00/00/1f/40/e00b813ecf293604b71734f44e8a5d584b049f55/476x357/home-alone-movie-still-475x357-pr-homealonestill_476x357.jpg

The McCallisters make it a habit of leaving their children alone in the house to fend off criminals while they jetset around the world. Child services has been notified. ;p

    8. Kill Bill

    http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_6qgeWVXWLfY/S7DCCXpkNWI/AAAAAAAAAtA/IB72p-siMKQ/s1600/Kill+Bill+2.jpg

As loving as they seemed when they were reunited, it’s not enough to make us forget that Bill put Beatrix in a coma and took their unborn daughter away. Not to mention how Beatrix made her it her prime goal to kill him! I wonder what kind of messed up stories she will tell her daughter about how she came to be in this world ;p

    7. Meet The Fockers

    http://cdn.sheknows.com/articles/meet-the-fockers.jpg

Having Robert Deniro as your father in law, who wouldn't be stressed out!

    6. The Addams Family

    http://movienewsfirst.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/The-Addams-Family-01-41.jpg

You think your family is a bit "weird", the Addams family surely proves they are normal compared to them .The Addams were bizarre and unaware of their eccentricities. Ignorance is bliss, right?

    5.National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

    http://images.wikia.com/christmasspecials/images/0/00/NLCV-7.jpg

This is a family most people can compare theirs' too, all those annoying relatives! and that dreaded time of the holidays where you must spend time with them!

    4.Psycho

    http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ANciG41IGJU/S-VBPk2ZaJI/AAAAAAAAA7s/485twnzIjuc/s1600/Psycho+a.jpg

It's always nice to love you mother, but a momma's boy is never attractive and when love crosses the line to obsession and insanity, maybe its time to let go....

    3.American Beauty

    http://lh3.ggpht.com/_CevndNfD6Ic/ScuKpQ7S9sI/AAAAAAAAAOI/NtvTBE8E3nY/American%20Beauty.jpg

The Burnhams look like the perfect suburban family with the perfect suburban house, but trouble lurks below the facade. Dad has quit his high-paying white collar job to flip burgers and chase cheerleaders; mom continues to canoodle with a mono-browed realtor; and little Jane is messing around with the creepy neighbor's kid. All that is definitely dysfunctional but the real danger lies with the gun-wielding homicidal homophobe next door.

    2. The Shinning

    http://www.soiwaslike.com/i/the-shining.gif

All work and no play might make Jack a dull boy, but considering Jack's idea of family fun involves a bottle of whiskey, an axe, and an elevator filled with blood, he should probably stick to work.   Wow this picture is really creepy LOL

    1. The Godfather

    http://italianaware.com/pictures/misc/godfatherfamily.jpg

Some families deal with brotherly troubles through a round of beer or perhaps group therapy. The Corleones, on the other hand, use more direct methods. Though their weddings are amazing, their fishing trips should be avoided ;p

Also some honorable mentions, (*many of which I have yet to see)

    The Royal Tenenbaums*

    Little Miss Sunshine*

    The Manchurian Candidate

    Mommie Dearest*

    Raising Arizona*

    Step Brothers*

    Igby Goes Down*

    This Boy's Life

    The Fighter

    The Simpsons*

    The Texas Chainsaw Massacre*

If you have any more suggestions of crazy movie families, let me know and if you'd like tell me how your family is dysfunctional :)

Nice blog, and that Nicholson pic is classic. This movie is not on your list, but I think it should be: Fight Club. The ending of Fight Club perplexes me, because a character shoots himself in the mouth with a gun, but walks away relatively unscathed. Does anyone know if this is likely, given the fact that a gun went off in his cheek? I think this needs to be discussed. Thank you.

I should think The Simpsons Movie is ALL about the ultimate dysfunctional family, or in general the TV series. Its been described as such on TV by others. But you know what, as your personal family is a great example, I don't think in reality we really know what DYSFunctional really really means. That means, cannot function, yet the large majority of familys stay familys because they CAN function, however badly. The divorced families are truely the dysfunctional ones, would you agree? Great list btw, not sure if some of these picks are really familys but still great films about the topic.

thnks for commenting :), i havent ever watched the simpsons but i guess i will add it to my list, and your right most families really dont know what dysfunctional means, and although my parents are not divorced they have come very close to that point and i have this crazy grandmother lol but we somehow also make up after every fight so i guess we are somewhat "functional"

    Greatest Antiheroes of Film

    Posted on 02/28/11 05:24 PM | Last edited on 02/28/11 05:24 PM

    Mood:
    Juicy

The term "anti-hero" is an oxymoron, you're either a hero or a villian, but how about all those unconventional heroes, ones who have the courage of their convictions, even if those convictions are disturbing, extreme or even downdright deranged, but we can't help but love them anyway!!!!!! and here of some of the best in film and television.....

Michael Corleone (The Godfather part I and II)

Hannibal Lecter (The Silence of The Lambs)

    Mad Max Rockatansky (Mad Max)

    Harry Callahan (Dirty Harry)

The Man with no Name -Clint Eastwood or 'Blondie" (Dollars trilogy)

Frank (Henry Fonda, Once Upon A Time in the West)

The MacManus Brothers (The Boondock Saints)

Captain Jack Sparrow (Pirates Of The Caribbean)

The Joker-played by Jack Nicholson (Batman) and Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight)-some may agree the joker is a pure villain, but you can't help but love thier dark and sadistic side ;p

    Batman and Catwomen (all movies)

    Tyler Durden (Fight Club)

Sweeny Todd (Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street)

    The Terminator (T2-Judgement Day)

    Han Solo (Star Wars)

    Henry Hill (Goodfellas)

    Neil McCauley (Robert Deniro, Heat)

Max Cady (Cape Fear)- Im sure many of you will only cast him as a villian, but my love for Robert Deniro will lead me to root for even his most deranged characters haha!!!!!!

The Bride (Uma Thurman, Kill Bill Volume 1&2)

    Paul kersey (Death Wish)

and last but not least my favorite.... Travis Bickle (Taxi Driver)

Here are also some of my favorite anti-heroes from television shows :)

    Jack Bauer (24)

    Dexter Morgan (Dexter)

    Tony Soprano (The Sopranos)

    Gregory House (House)

    Walter White (Breaking Bad)

Hope you have enjoyed the list and fill free to add any of your favorites that I may have missed :)

if you're not about 15 or 16 yrs old, I think you might have a bit of a problem there. Ever seen The Woodsman starring Kevin Bacon. ...just kidding. I kind of know what you mean - she has that strange Christopher Lee/ Frank Langella vampiric intensity combined with intelligence and sensitivity. Great character.

Okay, I'm going way back to the early 90's, but I'm going to have to go with Moira Kelly from "The Cutting Edge". She was spoiled, but there was just this kind of innocence and naiveness that I liked about her. My second pick would have to be Jennifer Jason Leigh's Stacy in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High".

I'd say Marion Cotillard in Inception. I'll be a bit more specific and say pre-limbo Marion, since Cobb's projection is psychotic and a bit homocidal. But if we did get a chance to see her before she went into Limbo with Cobb, I'm sure she would be a very lovely lady.

The character Szofi, played by Eszter Balla, in the 2003 film Kontrol (a hungarian thriller about ticket collectors on the Budapest underground- one of my favourite films). She is first enigmatic, then balshy, then seductive, then intelligent, then sensitive. She appears to have many sides to her and is not interested in trying to impress anyone particularly, although she is open to meeting people if she can see something in them that others don't. Eszter Balla is a really good theatre actress and plays the chemistry with Sándor Csányi really well.

wierd co-incidence. No, I'm Scottish, but after seeing Kontrol when it came out and following what Nimrod Antal was doing, I started to realise there is this whole Hungarian film culture which seems to stand out from other European countries. I met a hungarian guy in Glasgow once and asked him why it stood out as having a slightly wierd point of view on things and he said it might be historical because supposedly your language comes from Finnish and not Slavic, and also there's different ethnic groups which have formed the folklore like Magyar and so on, then there's the whole experiment with communism and the gang culture that has sprung up in recent times. No doubt you will know more about it all than me. I love Taxidermia also. Any recomendations?

Niki Soprano on 2/25/11 at 11:51 AM

well i actually don't watch hungarian films, kontrol was pretty much the only one i saw, but i will definitely check some of them out, and our language is really very different from most, can't be compared to any, there are not exactly gangs but there is a very large number of gypsies that do not "fit in" with hungarian society and there has been lots of conflict and violence

yeah. when I said gangs, I meant neo-nazi type ones. I saw a little documentary about it. supposedly I come from Romani, but please don't remove me because of it. I'm kind of open minded about the psychology behind those sorts of things anyway. I guess it's not people's fault that they have a need to belong, it's just ashame they express it that way.
