Hey, John, I gave you a thumb for honesty, but, um... you're way off base here. This is a great movie. I put it just below Goodfellas. But see, I don't really like the Godfather all that much so I guess we all have our blindspots. Good Luck
on 1/25/11 at 02:12 AM
thanks for thumb up buddy
on 1/24/11 at 04:34 AM
I thought it was a solid Ganster film, it's no GoodFellas but it's still good, I don't want to spoil anything for anyone reading these comments, but I think that Tom didn't want to kill Bernie the first time because he new it wouldn't serve his purpose yet not because he slept with his sister, he didn't care about that, and then in the end he kills him for it served his purposes...
on 1/25/11 at 02:14 AM
i understand the killing but he did care about the girl, the whole movie his actions and deeds are production of his feelings towards her. thanks for comment

This is my favorite gangster movie.Way above both Goodfellas,Scarface and The Godfather. But that's just me.You've obviously put a lot of thought into this review,so I won't slam it.Instead I'll take up your challenge and try to explain how I understand those questions you pose.1)The game between two mafia bosses:He's forced out by his old boss, but loyalties don't necessarily change that easily.I think he did it to prove a point. That he really was indispensable to Leo,and then walk off. 2)the Ber

in that case for answer 1.) then his acting was unsure. oh no, those 3 movies are way up higher on the level than this one. but as you say, different opinions. thanks anyway dude
on 1/24/11 at 05:26 AM
Really? I've been wanting to watch this for some time now and I hear it's the coens' most underrated work.
on 1/25/11 at 02:16 AM

Thumbs down. This is a really really good movie. lso, if your going to put any kind of spoiler in your piece, you should put a note up top for the peeps that haven't been lucky enough to see it yet.
on 1/25/11 at 02:17 AM
my spoilers are not that serious as some people's do. oh well, we cant agree about everything.
on 1/24/11 at 10:30 AM
I saw this in theatres when it came out in 1990. I had the same reaction. But after subsequent times seeing it again, I've grown to appreciate it more and more. Great dialogue, irony, and very stylish.
i dont think i will be watching it again
on 1/24/11 at 11:32 AM
great review man
on 1/24/11 at 01:43 PM
How can it noe be serious with just 11. The Godfather had 9 to my recollection. Goodfellas could'nt have much different and I'd say it's the greatest gangster movie ever.
on 1/25/11 at 02:19 AM
greatest gangster movie ever? where do you live? there needs to be more than just this. never mind, i promise myslef i wont argue with people :)
on 1/24/11 at 03:07 PM
A low body count is no reason to give a film a bad score, and the films simply oozes the coen brothers style, this film easily matches the Godfather and Goodfellas as all time great gangster films, and great gangster films are all about the characters. Thats why The Sopranos works so well as a TV show, u get a lot of character development, and not a very high body count
on 1/25/11 at 02:20 AM
i didnt give low score because of low body count, thats just a small fact. would never, never, never, compare this to almighty Godfather. at the end, we all got our own tastes and opinions.

Hey dude I hated the Cohen brother's A serious Man so don't feel alone. Good review.
oh, finally someone agrees, thanks man it means alot
on 1/24/11 at 08:14 PM
Thumbs up for going against the grain and arguing your case pretty well. I have a love-hate relationship with the Coens, so I won't be ranting. All I would say is don't read too much into the amount a film makes at the box office. On the one hand, just because a film takes loads of money doesn't mean it's any good; on the other hand a lot of films fail to recoup their funds due to poor distribution rather than anything else
on 1/25/11 at 02:21 AM
totally true buddy, thanks for backing me up
on 1/24/11 at 09:53 PM
Anybody can go and pick out little inconsistancies in pretty much any film. How about you actually review it? Well, I guess you sort of did. Though I totally disagree with you on the performances. Sleepwalks? I felt that all of the performances were powerful in their own way, though they were definately subtle. But yeah, this isn't really a review. Just a bunch of nitpicking. Not bashing your opinion. Just wish you would articulate it in a more compelling, thoughtful manner.
on 1/25/11 at 02:23 AM
this is my review, deal with it. im not gonna seat all day writing, got a life outside RT. Maybe you are just easily entertained. Anyway, thanks for your comment, we all got our different opinions and tastes.
on 1/25/11 at 02:30 AM

I've been trying to understand the high praise for this one myself. I saw it in the theatre and thought it was very dry. Great review J.M.

How funny,John,I feel the exact same way!I'm a big Coen Brothers fan,my favorite being No Country For Old Men.But this was sluggish, disjointed and slow.Plus it's been done before and better. No need to yell,John, because I was pretty disappointed too!Good review, friend!
