Things Change (1988)

Directed by: David Mamet This cult classic, that really should be from the 60's but actually is from the mid 70's, has an absolutely preposterous story, quite a few illogical plot devices, and a dated message. That said, I really enjoyed it. While it's hard to argue with some major flaws, it succeeds where it needs to most. It's visuals, while hardly 'realistic' looking, are very expressive, and create the vibe of the world they want you to be in very well. Also, the story, while preposterous, is a compelling one that fills your head with questions and wonders, and it does so in such a way that the answers answer only enough to keep you happy, not so much to kill your imagination. I also thought Michael York was very good, as was the great Peter Ustinov, who again, balances going way over-the-top with the confines of still wanting the movie to be taken seriously. Actually, that's the whole way the movie works. It's absured, but it's absured in such a way that it never stops being belivable enough to communicate what it's really trying to do. Not a great film, but I really enjoyed it, and I can certainly see why it's a cult classic. 8.0 |
