Although any Studio Ghibli film is bound to be better than most other animated films, The Secret World of Arrietty doesn't match the dizzying heights achieved with Ghibli's My Neighbor Totoro, which I would see as the likely comparison in terms of the feel and approach used here. While the meditative and laid-back approach worked beautifully in Totoro, it really lacks bite in Arrietty. This is a story begging for a faster pace and more exciting energy ala Castle in the Sky. I was bored through the middle act, it just felt like scenes were dragging beyond their expiration date and that the philosophical moments were forced. A mild disappointment from the creators of Spirited Away.
