I didn't enjoy it as a thriller so much, but Jaws is probably the most entertaining film I've ever seen. The last half of the film is a sea adventure that would've made Melville proud. The salty Quint, played by one of my favorite actors, Robert Shaw, is as compelling and nuanced a seadog as Billy Budd or Ahab. The cinematography, musical score, humor, character conflict, script (for a "blockbuster")... Honestly, what more could you ask for? If this film was released as-is in June, 2011, would anyone really decry it because the shark wasn't a CGI wonder and the crew didn't need to fight off $20 million of 3-D CGI sea monsters? Avatar could learn a thing or two if it really studied this movie.
