Harrison Ford an Icon or Overrated?

    Posted on 05/23/11 07:26 PM | Last edited on 05/23/11 07:26 PM

    Mood:
    Thoughtful

I have been catching some movies lately with the birth of my 2nd child and most of them have involved Harrison Ford, a lot of his iconic roles such as Indiana Jones, Han Solo, Rick Deckard and others.  And I got thinking when it comes to actors who would be considered the best we often go straight to Robert De Niro or Al Pacino for their iconic roles in Godfather, Goodfellas, Scarface, Taxi Driver and Raging Bull; some of the best movies ever made. But I, personally, rarely put Harrison Ford up there even though 2 of his Character could be considered the best Characters ever made and really were conveyed so well by the fantastic work of Ford.

My question is do you think Harrison Ford is worthy of being in the same category as Pacino and De Niro or is he a little overrated? Could have anyone made the iconic roles as famous as Ford?

Would love to hear some of RT's thoughts.

I would argue that De Niro and Pacino, because of their recent roles (excepting Pacino as Kervorkian) have dropped out of their "iconic" status. Now they mostly suck.

The answer is that he is a definitive icon. He has given us two of the greatest characters of any film ever, and the mainstream success of those films, as well as their recognition as classic and iconic, cement that status.

He is most certainly an icon. I think back to what almost was, (Remember Tom Selleck was slated to play Indiana Jones until Magnum P.I. pulled him out), and think that the character would not have been the same. Harrison Ford brought a rugged, lovable rogue mystique to his performances, and that is what made characters like Jones and Han Solo great. However, like all actors, including De Niro and Pacino, Ford's career is a tale of two halves, and the second half is always underwhelming compared to the first. That said, the one missing puzzle piece that might keep Ford out of this status is the elusive Oscar. De Niro and Pacino each have one, Ford does not.

He's good but he's far past his prime. As Solo and Jones he is a total icon.

Cool blog. I think he's one of the best actors we've had in the movies but he is just shy of De Niro and Pacino's greatness. All three of the actors haven't been in anything really interesting lately so I hope they're not getting rusty. :/

Well he's definitely an icon however not on the level as Pacino and De Niro as you mentioned, he's still a great actor. It's too bad you don't care for Blade Runner because if you did you would realise how well crafted his performence is on that it's one of the greatest pefrformences of all time Indiana Jones and Star Wars aren't his best performences. I'm not really sure if i'd call him overrated but there are quiet alot of actors alot greater then him but aint he more famous for popularity then actually being considered with the top greats anyway?

Well, there's no arguing that Ford has some truly excellent characters, and when he's in top form he's as good as any. I especially loved him as Dr. Richard Kimble in The Fugitive. The problem is that he isn't as choosy with his roles and therefore ends up in some pretty bad movies. All actors have been in lame movies, but Ford seems to be in more and more lately. While I think he's as talented as some of the best, I suppose I can't really put him amongst the Pacinos or De Niros.

Icon. He played two of the most iconic character in all of film, Han Solo and Indiana Jones. He also starred in films that would become iconic in their own right, like Blade Runner and The Fugitive. Stuff like Witness and Frantic show him to be as capable a dramatic actor as anyone else. And blockbusters like Air Force One and the Jack Ryan movies are a lot of fun. Pretty good combination of critical and commercial successes, if you ask me.

I'd definitely say he is an icon. Even though he plays mostly the same type of role all the time, he plays it incredibly well. I love Harrison Ford.

Harrison Ford is a wonderful actor, and he does deserve to be up there with the greats because he is one of them. Nobody can speak wrong of Harrison Ford. Sorry, I mean no harm, I'm just kind of in love with Harrison Ford so I defend him valiantly.

I think Harrison Ford should be considered an icon along with Robert and Al, and I'm not just saying it because he played Indiana Jones. Like it was mentioned before, Tom Selleck was originally slated to play that iconic character but his contract with Magnum P.I. prevented him to do so. I recall seeing an episode of Magnum P.I. in which Tom was dressed as Indiana Jones as they paid homage (or made good-humored fun of-can't recall. It was years ago) to Raiders. Yes, each of these actors have played in either very good movies or stinkers, but unfortunately Harrison haven't found the role that awarded him the Oscar. I'm actually curious as to what would it take for him to win that statue?! The man have played in so many different roles, from action to thrilers, but can't seem to get it right. Nonetheless, Harrison is a very entertaining actor (mumbling his lines or not) and I even named my youngest son after him!
