As promised, here are my picks for the best of the year for 2009. Some of my picks mirror what most awards shows have picked, while some are different. I’m sure some of my choices will be met with opposition or some questioning. But they are my picks, and I stand by them. So without further ado, here are the winners of the 5th Annual ThirdMan Awards.

Up is excellent. It's definitely in my top3 as well. Supporting actors are no brainers. As for other categories, I'm not so sure. Bullock is really overrated and special effects category... Avatar just deserves this award so much. You can't even argue with it actually. Besides, I'm not a fan of Where The Wild Things Are and objectively the effects were meh in it. Other than that, pretty good picks.

I had a feeling that Where the Wild Things Are would cause some issues. I know that the world of Avatar is beautiful, but there was something about the way Wild Things mixed the animatronics/puppeteering and CGI effects to bring those characters to life that impressed me more. Typically I go with more epic special effects films with this category, but this time I was won over more by Wild Thing's subtle approach.
