I have read all the Dirk Pitt books, well the ones that were written all in a row several years ago. Sahara isn't the most prolific memory one. In any case, the people in the books are the same, the two front ones being Dirk Pitt and Al Geordino.
I've seen the movie promos for Sahara. I've read some things about the flick in the paper as well. The interview that Zahn had that recounted his interview with Mr. Cussler included in that. I have questioned how the author could have approved the actors for the movie. I did that when I saw the first promo, which was the first I'd heard of it (I don't seek out all movies beforehand, I do have another life). I did that after I read a lot about it. I haven't changed my mind, either the author is crazy or demented or both, or he was strong armed, or ... who knows, just didn't care about the facts of the books being part of the movie. I have since come to believe that it's all about marketing. Who came up with the movie? I don't know, and don't care. The thing that underlies the whole affair is "sponsorship". We used to live in South Florida and used to go to Florida Marlin games at Joe Robbie Stadium. The year they sold the Foul poles is the year I became entirely dissolusioned to the marketing of every picky anty thing there is. This movie is just one big marketing ploy to sell sunglasses and jeeps. To get the hype up for summer and get people buying stuff for summer. Did I mention sunglasses or Jeeps? Oh, yeah, of course I did. TV has that ad plastered all over every channel. I will say that Dirk Pitt is a man. The actor that plays him can't be Pitt, no way. I will say that Al Geordino is a stocky dark macho man. The actor that plays him IS NOT him, can't pretend for even a second to be him. Neither can the Pitt portrayal be pretended by his actor. I mean, Pitt is a guy, a big he guy. Not a southern slyboy dude. MM can't pull it off. So here it is: A Clive Cussler book finally brought to the silver screen and I am ready to watch it and mock it. I know the books are entertaining, not exactly deep, but not exactly something to mock if done right in a movie. So I am ready to mock the movie. I have no choice. The author is involved in the movie production. His approval is on it. So's Jeeps. So mine ain't, no way. I'll rate it after I see it, and give it a rating based on all of the above. It's entertainment value if I pretend it isn't a Dirk Pitt story will be an inside the post rating, but not a movie official rating. I can't divorce the book from the movie in this case. They are supposedly married and happily. I say that ain't so, so they will together get a grade as one couple that is married but not too happy together. |

We are going to see The Pacifier today, if all goes well. We've been waiting for this one to open up in the theatres. I see the "reviewers" are all over it as if it's dog crud.
Not ALL of them, mind you. This is supposed to be a "family film" and all I'll say is this: If the long Preview of it in the theatre is at least in the actual movie, that'll be satisfying. Who's looking for an Oscar contender here? No one. Who cares about that anyhow. Not me! Oscars are for movie people, from movie people. It's not the regular people's thing. We out here appreciate funny family films. We out here may appreciate some movie "stars" more than other regular people out here do. So plunk me down as one of them. I like Vin Diesel movies. I make no apology for it. It's just so. Vin is a dry character. If you don't like Vin, guess you don't like dry wine, dry beer, English humour, etc. You probably don't like Picasso either. ;) Dry is fantastic. It's not a good descriptive for what goes along with dry. It's not dried-out, just dry, witty, edgy, not wet-moody-in-your-face stuff. Let it be known that forthcoming there will be an actual review from Yours Truly, of The Pacifier. Either today or tomorrow, depending on daughter not throwing up again. If she does that, then it could be that we won't see the movie until next week. Therefore, review here will be based on the fact that we have seen it. I refuse to write a fake review :) |

It's been another fast year. Amazing how much faster it seems now that I'm doing "What I think about movies" here on Rottentomatoes. It really dates things to have the year behind titles ... and to put this post into that format ... whoa! It's the first time I've written the new year number out.
It's a boring night of New Year proportions in our home. Surfing the net, posting here and there. I'm trying to get my dearest off of his computer so he will come and watch X Men with me. He still hasn't seen the whole thing. Hopefully he will before next year begins! :) |

I know I should want to see Finding Nemo, I know I can easily watch it as we have the DVD of it, and no less -- it comes with 2 separate versions, one disc for Full Screen, and one precious disc for Widescreen. So ... I like Pixar stuff I've seen before, namely Toy Story and Toy Story 2, but I have no inclination to install that disc into my player. One of these days I'll be bored enough, or desperate enough.
Every once in awhile my 5 year old tries to talk to me about something or someone, and I say, "What are you talking about?!!" of course, it's always "Nemo, mama!" I can hardly believe they've viewed this flick, but I haven't. We have separate lives, somewhat now, as the TV in the basement is "theirs" and the one in the master bedroom is "ours". So, with the dual-disc theory, it should work, but so far, naught of Nemo has occurred in the "ours" DVD player. Is it really as good as a 7, 5, and 3 year old would say it is? If I like Toy Story the best of the two TS movies, would I really like Nemo still? Eeek! I'm bored, isn't that obvious! :o It doesn't help that a cold I've had that's been easy-going the last 5 days has gone disturbingly worse since last night --I may end up watching Nemo under feverish delusional status. :D |

Above is a link to the official movie site for Two Brothers, a movie about twin tiger cubs ... We saw the trailer for it before Peter Pan (2003). It's looks very interesting thus far. Here's the Rotten Tomatoes link to the film stuff: not much there yet. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/TwoBrothers-10003393/preview.php It's in theatres on July 9, 2004. Here's one pre-review out there on it: http://www.boxofficeprophets.com/tickermaster/listing.cfm?TMID=947 |
