Pretty, pretty cool.
Safety Not Guaranteed is the story about the journalist Jeff (New Girl's Jake Johnson) and two interns, Darius and Arnau (Aubrey Plaza and Karan Soni) who travel to Ocean View, Washington to investigate a local newspaper ad that invites you to time travel.
They soon find out that it's Kenneth Calloway (Mark Duplass) who initiated the ad and it's Darius who is assigned to find out more about this weirdo.
There's also a subplot involving Jeff who tries to reconnect with a high school sweetheart and simultaneously trying to make The Indian nerd Arnau lose his virginity.
The story comes from a real hoax-ad from 1997 and Safety Not Guaranteed is a perfect example of how original content gets made into a movie. This is an Indie in its most honest way and the little twists and beautifully-written characters make it a wonderfully silly experience - silly in the best possible way.
It also lives from the energy and likability of the great cast. Aubrey Plaza, a no-nonsense girl falls for a loser with an utopian idea while Jake Johnson's charm keeps the film grounded and puts you back to reality whenever the time travel story takes over and gains plausibility. There's also a cameo appearance of Jeff Garlin as Darius' father and I'd have really liked to see more of him.
Anyways, you don't get to see such an original and innocent film every day. So try to get a copy and watch it!
