The most violent film I've seen without any actual, physical violence shown(spoiler alert: until the end). Keitel's raw performance get's across the film's emotional themes of soul-rotting, frustration, and hopelessness. I'm not quite sure, though, whether to interpret the lieutenant as a mythical embodiment of these corruptions or as a real human with (extreme) flaws but a somewhat good/vulnerable core. The ending would suggest the latter. Maybe he's both. In any case, Bad Lieutenant is powerfully depressing and worth watching if you can stomach humanity portrayed at its lowest.
