So I am 287 movies into the project now, and I can’t wait to be done with it for many reasons.  I want to start re watching movies, but I can’t add them to the list if I re-watch them.  I want to re-watch them, because I have forgotten most of the plots of the films I have seen since I started this project.  I watch so many movies in such a short period of time that unless I review them or if it became one of my favorites I won’t remember the plot.  Its like too many things are being crammed into my head at once too quickly, and I can’t fit it all.  That is why I struggle to remember the plots of the films I watch.  Now all I usually remember is weather or not I liked it.

I still love the fact that I have done the project, but I can’t wait to be done so I can watch movies purely for fun, and so I can re-watch them and remember them.  I also gave up TV shows for this project, and I also rarely play my guitar because of my project.  I do get my homework done, and I only watch a movie on a school day if I got my work done first.  Some nights I can’t watch a full film, but the weekends and vacations where I watched multiple movies every day allows me to be ahead of my movie schedule where I must average 1 a day, so I can afford to go a day or 2 without watching one.

I have been doing my screenwriting.  I have been trying to come up with a story line, before I write the whole thing.  I got 16 pages in but then I re started the other day so I could come up with a new story line.  It is going to be a western/mystery.  Films like “True Grit,” “No Country For Old Men,” “Django Unchained,” “Unforgiven,” “Tombstone,” and “ The Usual Suspects” have been giving me inspiration.  Those are the ones that have been giving me my inspiration lately.  I have been inspired by the Usual Suspects to make my western into one that is a really hard to figure out mystery.  I don’t know how I will do, but I have a pretty good surprise ending in my head.  I plan to spend my summer vacation writing it.

Now people who have read my previous blogs tend to tell me that I am really “farsighted,” “ambitious,” and really “passionate.”  That describes me perfectly.  I am really farsighted, and I have this fantasy of the future, and I am a dreamer.  My fantasy is writing an awesome screenplay that sells, and gets a lot of great actors to do the movie.  Then the film becomes a big hit, and gets nominated for Oscars.  That is my dream in life.  I think I am so farsighted, because I don’t like being in high school, and I feel like it keeps my from doing what I really want in life, so my vision of the future is caused my anxiousness to be done with high school.  It is hard to explain, but I do think it is related to me being anxious to get done with with school.

In another week or two I am going to start doing research on the films of June so I can blog about what will be the hottest ones of the month.  I blogged about the movies of may and so far my predictions have been pretty dead on, but I plan to do that every month, and I have to start preparing for my blog about the movies of June.

I will spend my entire summer watching, reviewing, and blogging about movies.  I will also try to see if I can get my whole screenplay done.  That is just another update about how I am doing.  Right now almost all I do with my free time relates to movies, and almost all of my thinking time goes towards movie sin some way.

    Movies of may

May is going to be a big month in movies this year.  There are many sequels, and there are many films with big build-ups.  I think a few of them will be good, but I do think there will be some disappointments.  It could be an awesome movie month or a huge disappointment.  These are the five films I think are going to have the most hype, and the films that will make the most money.  This is what I think will happen with them.

    The Great Gatsby:

I strongly believe that the Great Gatsby is going to be the movie of the month.  I think that for many reasons.

It is based off of one of the most famous pieces of literature of all time.  That already gives it an advantage to be great.  As long as it sticks to a similar story line it should be good.  Whoever wrote the script I am sure was smart enough to know that the screenplay will be great as long as you stuck to the book.  I read the book in school about two months ago, and I didn’t like it, but I think I will like this movie. Also the fact that is a remake of a bad original movie could make it better.  The old one stayed true to the book, but it is dated and boring.  The film looks like an updated and better version of the original.  They will be able to analyze the flaws of the original, and correct them.  A good remake should do that. The casting is also great.  Having Leonardo Dicaprio play Jay Gatsby is a great idea for many reasons.  First of all he is a great actor.  He has the intensity in him to do a drama like The Great Gatsby.  The trailers make the film look like it is going to be very intense on the drama, and Dicaprio is great at playing intense roles.  I love it that they chose him to play Gatsby himself, because he is a great actor, and I like him in pretty much everything he does.

However it could be a disappointment, because it a film that people will definitely have high expectations for.  But that is completely understandable considering what it is based on, and because of how big of a classic the book it is based off of is.  But I still think it will be very good.

    Iron Man 3:

I have mixed feelings about how good Iron man 3 will be.  It will either be awesome or a failed attempt to be epic.  The first one was great, and it was definitely one of the better superhero films.  The 2nd one was ok, but I think it definitely wasn’t as good as the first.  The trailer for this looks epic, but sometimes they try to hard, and ruin it.  An example is Spiderman 3.  They tried to hard with that film, and it was terrible.  I hope marvel learned from that, and they do it right.  They seem to have been pretty consistently good with their films lately though.  This film has the potential to be just as awesome as the Avengers.  When films like this come out it is always talked about weather or not they will kill the protagonist.  They usually never do.  They tried to fake us at the end of Dark Knight Rises, but they kept him alive.  I think they will keep Tony Stark alive just so he can be in Avengers 2 in a couple of years.  I look forward to seeing it this weekend though with my friends.  I predict that it will be at the top of the box office this weekend though, but it will be pushed to 2nd when the Great Gatsby comes out.

    Hangover 3:

Hangover 2 was funny, but it was almost exactly identical to the first one.  The only flaw was that it was predictable; because we had seen the exact same show before that.  But this one looks completely different.  They may just get back what made the first one so surprising and original.  They go back to Vegas, and I have no idea what they are going to do.  The film looks absolutely crazy, and I actually think it may be good.  They are going to have the exact same cast for it, so that will be good.

It will either be hit or miss.  I seriously doubt it will only be ok.  Comedy sequels are rarely good, but I have no idea how the end to a trilogy will be.  I felt like with the 2nd one they were just trying to continue the awesomeness of the first, but this one could be completely new.  I don’t know if there has been a comedy trilogy that has been good throughout, but this could be the first.  If they do a fourth one I think it will be terrible so I hope they are telling the truth and this is the end.

    Star Trek Into Darkness:

I have no doubts about this one being good.  They have too many things to base it off of to make it bad.  There was a whole TV show that ran for years, and there are so many things from that show that they could take from to make it a good movie.  I just don’t see how they could mess this one up to be perfectly honest.  I would be shell shocked if it wasn’t good.

    Fast and the Furious six:

I am not sure if I will see this.  I only saw the first one and I didn’t like it.  But these films have a cult following so it will have a lot of people who go to see it.  However series like this eventually run their course, and run out of ideas.  That is my prediction for this film.  I don’t have a lot to say about it, because I didn’t see any of the sequels, but I think this one will be bad just because I think they probably ran out of ideas after a while.  It will make a ton of money, but I don’t think it will do well on the tomatometer.  I probably won’t see it.

Those are my predictions for this month.  I think the Great Gatsby, and Star Trek Into Darkness will be great, and I’m not sure about Hangover three or iron man three.  I also think Fast Six will be bad.  If the four films that I talked about that I want to see are all good or most of them are good that will be a greta movie month for me.

I share similar opinion with you on The Great Gatsby, Iron Man 3 and Star Trek into Darkness. But I believe that Hangover 3 will be bad. I did not like the first film, I expected it be something like American Pie, I hate the second film, it was like watching some vulgar porn( I mean the scene where they show transgender nudity openly and all). I have seen all the Fast and furious films except the first one. I liked the 4th and 5th. I don't believe in the tomatometer like you, so if I get a chance, I would see this one as well. Also, I wish to ask you one thing, if you decide to see a film based on the RT ratings, which rating would you prefer the Tomato meter or the audience rating?

DiCaprio is perfect casting for Gatsby and it certainly looks very stylish; I'll be keen to see how it turns out as well. I'm also quite looking forward to Iron Man 3, granted Iron Man 2 was disappointing but it'll be interesting to see what Shane Black brings to the franchise!

Update on my 365 movie in a year project

So I have less then a 100 movies to go before I finish my project where I watch 365 movies I had no already seen in a year.  Though I have been watching a lot of great stuff I look forward to being done.  That way I can be done with watching movies for my own little project, and do them just for fun.  Right now it honestly feels like a job, but a fun job.  I have been using the library to watch films a lot lately.  Whenever I go there I always drop off the movies I rented last time I was there, and then pick up a few new ones.

Lately I have been mostly watching films in my book “1001 Movies you must see before you die,” or watching films that have been nominated for best picture or won best picture.  When I am done with my 365 movies in a year thing I plan to go on and try to see every film ever nominated for best picture or won best picture.  I may do the project again once I finish it.  I am considering changing it to how many movies I can watch in a year.  If I do that means that it won’t end once I have watched 365.  I won’t make that decision until I have seen 365 movies that I hadn’t already seen.

I just switched to a new high school that gives me more free time, so I have been able to write more reviews.  I write one every other day for the most part.  I have been trying to write more bad reviews.  I find that I have to take a different approach to writing reviews for bad movies then for good movies.  I used to mostly only write good reviews, but now that I have mastered writing good ones, I want to become just as good at writing bad ones.  I also want to keep on improving on my writing for film reviews.

When I started I looked up to other users on this site, and I wished that I could write stuff just as good as they do, but now I have had a few people tell me that they wish they could write just as good as I do, which has made me feel really proud of myself, and I feel like I have accomplished a lot on this site by increasing my following, and having people tell me that.  I am a junior in high school, but once I get to college I plan to go into film making, and I have been writing screenplays, but if that doesn’t work I know I will want to be a professional film critic, and not just on rotten tomatoes.  That is why this project has helped me.  It has helped me learn that writing is my true calling.  I don’t think I would have developed the skills as a writer if I didn’t join this site and start this project.  I also have been wondering how many times somebody has read a review I wrote and decided to see the film based on what I wrote about it.  If you have done that I would like to know.

I also plan to start doing video blogs on YouTube once I get the time to do it.  I want to start doing more blogs on this site too.  I want to start doing a thing where every week or every other week I discuss what I think the best films in theatres are at the moment.  Another idea is that every week before movies come out on Friday I will blog about what films I think are going to be the ones to see.  Once I get the time I will do that, but now I am trying to catch up on schoolwork, but I will review and watch movies when I can, but it may be a while before I actually start doing the stuff I say I want to do.  This blog is just an update on how I am doing, and how the project is going.  I also wanted people to know my plans and what to expect from me in the future.  As you can tell I plan to get more and more into writing about movies, and I am excited to get around to do this stuff.

Hi, I just read your blog now, I guess it left me devastated, you are really farsighted aren't you. I would wish to see Brendan Connely as a scriptwriter than as a professional critic. And about the question you asked on your blog, sorry, I haven't seen any film after reading your review about that particular film. It is because I don't have a habit of reading reviews before watching a film. I only read reviews of films that I have seen and then I would relate it to my views. In such a case, my favourite review of yours is Dark Knight(2008). I liked it really well. Before I began using RT, I used to get films after searching for films in Wikipedia, there they show you whether a film is good or not based upon the critical reception. Then I saw a lot of critically acclaimed films and felt most of them to be disappointing. Then I began using RT because it helps me find films easily. I always look forward to the audience rating in this site, but I would never judge a film bad based on the critic ratings. That is why I rate any film I liked without any reluctance, I would even do that if they are both panned by audience and critics. I have noticed that you once had 500+ reviews and now you deleted all the small ones and kept only the long ones, why is that so? do you believe that a professional should only write long reviews?

Great blog and kudos for the movie project, it really shows your enthusiasm and commitment, two things I think all great writers need in spades. I have to say I watched Silver Linings Playbook after reading your review and I'm glad I did because I was missing a really great movie! I actually joined RT because I wanted to try and get back into writing and comparing some of my half hearted excuses for reviews to some of the stuff you've been writing has actually inspired me to clear them all, start again and this time write them properly! So, thanks for that and keep up the good work!

A movie every day for a year

I have been watching a movie every day since 11/9/12.  I must watch 365 movies in a year starting from that day.  I have the list of films that I have watched

    http://www.rottentomatoes.com/user/952425/lists/?id=917208002_55901&tab=movie

I also can't rewatch anything, and if I do I can't add it to the list.  Since I started that I have become more in love with movies then anything else.  I have gone deeper and deeper into genres and old films that I never watched before.  My taste has expanded, and my film reviewing capabilities have gotten so much greater.  Movies have become my life now.  I an hour of sleep every school night to watch one.  I fantasize about them, I have started on two screenplays, but I want to learn how to write them before I go back to them.  Movies are the things that make me the happiest now.  I rarely see a movie that I didn't like, because I have developed a great sense as to what films I will like, dislike, or just think are ok.

I have been watching a ton of Alfred Hitchcock films lately, and I intend to see all of his big hits.  I have watched many other old films like "Citizen Kane," and "Casablanca."  I intend to go deeper and deeper into really old films, and I have such a strong appreciation for them.  I also intend to go into more western, and neor films.  I have been renting tons of movies from the library to do this personal project of mine, and it will definitely take me less then a year to watch 365 movies unless I go about two months without watching them.  This has been a great experience for me, and I feel like it is a preview to having a job.  Because I have made movie watching and reviewing my job that I must do everyday.  It has also been a good thing for me because it has helped me learn to balance my time.  I have had to balance my time between watching films, reviewing them, getting all of my school work done, sleep, and friends.  I also play guitar, which is something that I have cut down on slightly since I started this project.  I can’t wait until I am done with this project so I can do it again and see if I can watch the same amount of movies in an even quicker time.  Movies are the greatest thing in the world too me.

I impress adults with my knowledge of older films and with my film reviews.  I am the only one at my school who reviews stuff like the stuff I reviews at my school.  Other kids think it is really cool, and it is the thing that I do that makes me feel special.  At times I tend to struggle to have good self-esteem, which is normal and very common amongst people my age, but when I write a good movie review I feel awesome.  Lately film reviewing has been a form of therapy for me, and a total release of thought.  I am a very opioniated person so that helps me in that area too.  My uncle Mike is the author Michael Connelly, and I intend to become a writer like him.  I try to show him my reviews to see what he thinks, because I know if I can impress him I must have done a great job considering he is the author of “The Lincoln Lawyer,” “Blood work,” and “The Black Echo.”  I always show my best reviews to my parents, and ask what they think.  I sometimes struggle to take feedback, because I am stubborn, but I will work on that next.

I really want to start making money for writing my film reviews, and I want to start writing about music on other websites.  I am definitely a writer.  I will write things in the future such as screenplays, film reviews, music journals, blogs, and maybe a book.  I also tend to write my thoughts on Facebook.  This site is what really made me decide that I am a writer.  I am only a junior in high school, and I am only 17 years old.  I have a long life ahead of me, and no matter what I am writing I will always be watching movies.  I expect that I will be one of those guys who has seen every movie by the time I get to college.  I don’t know if I will always be reviewing, but I will always be writing.

I really enjoyed reading this Brendan. It's not often I get to read something personal from my friends here on RT and loved that you openly shared your thoughts. I'm also trying to explore older films. I love "Citizen Kane" (to me at least) it's as perfect as a character study can get. This site has a habit of improving writing skills. Experimentation is perhaps is the best part on this site allowing room to find a style your most comfortable in writing with. As one writer to another I hope you succeed in your pursuit in whatever you write. You'll always have readers with dedications like yours.

You watch a movie everyday! I wish I could at least watch a movie once in a week. I find you strange, you are really ambitious( there's nothing bad about it though). I am an Engineering student. One problem that I find with this site is that none of the people I know(people whom I have actually seen) are in here. Most of my friends don't even know about the existence of this site. They still live in Facebook. So I find it lonely here, I feel like I am purposelessly killing time in this site. I plan to take a break. From today you will see little from me, I liked your new blog. I have earlier gone through your list when there was just around 80 items in it. Now I understand why u watch a lot of Classics.

Yeah I watch a movi every day as a personal project. once I watch 365 in less then a year which is the project I will take a break from movie watching them for a little while. Well I won't watch one every day. The thing is I still do well in school so I think it is ok to do it as long as my grades don't go well. I want to be a film maker. And yes I know I am a little unusual, but I want to be. As long as I am not weird I am happy, because I will be more interesting, and different from other people. Its kind of the identity I have built for myself. Yeah and as for the engineering thing you said. I imagine I won't see many moves once I go to college, but I will be in film school most likely so I probably will watch them.

    Breaking Bad

    Posted on 10/22/12 06:32 PM | Last edited on 10/22/12 06:32 PM

    Mood:
    Indifferent

The theme where somebody that is good turns for the dark is one of my favorite movie themes.  What always happens in that theme is that somebody who started off as a good guy, turned to the other side for some reason, weather it's because they are losing it, or something big happens to them.  but what always happens after that is it effects everybody around them in a bad way, and eventually that person starts to become more and more isolated.

In the Godfather Micheal Corleone at first didn't want to have any part in the family business, but when his fateh rgets shot he goes to the hospital to save his father, and tells him "I'm with you now."  Then he gets punched by a cop, then decides to kill that cop, and the Turk, and from that point on he's all in.  At the end of the film he is the new Don, and his first wife has been murdered because of him.  In the 2nd one he loses control over the Corleone family, but has complete control of the mob, but he is becoming more and more isolated.  In the end of the movie he loses his 2nd wife Kay, and she leaves with his children.  He kills his brother Fredo, which makes him even more isolated.  In the 3rd one it shows how he regrets his entire life, and his daughter gets shot in the chest, by a man that was trying to kill him.  When he dies he is all alone, and all of the women in his life have either been killed, or they hate him.  That is an example of a story where somebody breaks bad, and it effects his whole life, adn everybody around him.

In Saw John Kramer broke bad as a form of release, and he was losing it.  His wife had a misscariage, and then when he was diagnosed with cancer he tryed to kill himself.  He failed, and vowed to spend teh rest of his life testing other peoples will to live.  He first tested the man who killed his unborn son, and then a few more.  He becomes a sociopath, and becomes known as the infamous Jigsaw killer.  His wife leaves him.

Breaking Bad is a cliche that gets used in a lot of trilogy's, and it is a fascinating theme to me.

Brendan, you now have almost more than 180+ friends and you started 3 blogs, but have you ever wondered why you have got too few comments for all of them? It's not because your ideas are bad, its because your blogs cannot attract people. For that you must have to make their topic more provocative. I will soon begin a blog with a provocative message, but I don't expect many comments because I only have 5 friends at this point of time. I need an advice from you, should I make my blog private or public?

Well blogging isn't that important too me on this site, I haven't spent that much time on that yet. I will though, and I will read your blogs. And make a blog public so that way it shows up in the community page, and people will be more likely to see them.

I do have a subject in my mind, but I think that if I make it public, the subject may tend to hurt people's sentiment and I could get a lot of F words coming my way.

    What makes a movie good

    Posted on 09/10/12 06:16 PM | Last edited on 09/10/12 06:16 PM

Just because a movie is entertaining doesn't mean it's good.  A movie can be entertaining, but it can still be bad.  Like Terminator 3 was bad, but it was still entertaining.  What makes a movie good is the story, and plot line.  Then comes entertaining.  What makes a movie great is the acting, script, entertainment, originality, and the the production.

Thank you. So many people tell me it was entertaining, so I liked it, but i did think it was kind of unrealistic. If I have things to criticize about the film that means it was bad.

    Movie Love

    Posted on 11/25/11 08:13 AM | Last edited on 11/25/11 08:13 AM

People always fall in love way faster in movie sthen they do in real life, it's ridiculious.  Like in Titanic they fell in love in 2 days, how would they even get to know eachother that fast.  Also when somebody proposes to a girl in a movie she is always really surprised.  In real life they have talked about it before in the past, so she wouldn't be completely surprised by it.  Also in movies people always start off as friends then they start to lke eachother a little bit more, then they fall in love, then they breakup, then they finally resolve the problem and live happily ever after.  Movie love is really different then real love.
