I see why it didn't score well though it's lower than I thought possible. I thought this was one of the better science fiction movies I've seen.
Because I didn't read around beforehand I thought this was a loose remake for most of the time I watched it. The feel of the movie was similar to the 1982 movie. It wasn't until the very end that events reveal it distinctly as being prequel to the 1982 "The Thing".
I enjoyed this movie because in contrast to most American horror flicks the characters are calm and generally don't run about screaming with their arms in the air. They have discussions to look for the best options. As a whole the characters usually lead by the paleontologist Kate Lloyd make important discoveries and reasonably intelligent decisions that end up keeping the threat from spreading to the rest of the world. The editing and scenery are also pretty good (I like snow).
There are about 10 characters that all feel familiar to the audience when our monster starts to cause trouble. I liked that all the characters help or hinder various situations to some extent with no single clear village idiot or always right and all knowing hero.
