After The Fellowship of the Ring actually met my high expectations, I became very excited to see The Two Towers, even though it is well-known by fans as the worst in the beloved trilogy. I can say for certain that The Two Towers isn't quite as good as The Fellowship of the Ring, though I'm not sure yet if it is the worst in the trilogy, since I haven't yet seen the final installment: The Return of the King.
The Two Towers has a somewhat rocky start due to a surplus of exposition. This plagues most of the first act, and some of the second, but ultimately doesn't sink the ship. The first acts do start to drag at points, especially during the time spent with the Treebeard and the hobbits. I was extremely interested in what was happening with Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, but my interest with the hobbits and the Ents was waning as I heard more and more dull dialogue. I understand that the audience was supposed to understand the frustration of having to hear Treebeard speak so slowly, but the time spent with Treebeard was too frustrating and overlong to be appreciated for what it was meant to do. The third act really picks up, and it is clear during the action sequences that Peter Jackson has improved as a director; they are more comprehensible and therefore more enjoyable. It is still obvious that most of the action sequences are simply meant to move the plot along, but the filmmakers still put in effort to make them exciting. I was a bit underwhelmed by the action sequence with the Ents, but the battle of Helm's Deep was well-choreographed, well-directed, exciting, and fun; it overshadowed the forgettable fight sequence. The cinematography, costume design, set pieces and makeup effects are excellent; more impressive than that of the previous film. The cast is still outstanding, but the script doesn't match the quality of the acting. The acting is still impressive, but the surplus of exposition and bad dialogue holds the actors down. The special effects range from impeccable to mediocre, while the motion capture is extremely impressive.
The Two Towers isn't quite as satisfying, well-written or interesting as The Fellowship of the Ring, but the cinematography, direction, effects and action sequences are definitely better than that of the first installment in the acclaimed trilogy. I'm excited to see The Return of the King, and if the final installment is good, then The Lord of the Rings trilogy can rank as one of the best of all time.

Felt the same way about the pacing issues, but generally still like it. That is why it's my least favorite in the trilogy. Can't to read your review on Return on King, it's closes the trilogy in a grand scale.

I just saw it, but my friend's television was... Well, the film was so clear that everything looked atrocious; the CGI, the costumes, the sets. It was a terrible viewing experience, and the overly clear visuals made it impossible to properly judge the film as a whole; I need to watch it again.

Great review with tons of great points! I still find it to be just impossible to tire of these films even with their length and tumultuous pacing. I actually loved the last march of the Ents but it was mostly the dialogue and music leading up to it that made it cool.

Thanks! The score was good; I could see how it helped to make the last march of the Ents cool.

I never understand why people think The Two Towers is the weakest of the trilogy. I think it's the best and it's my favorite. It has all the best bits of Gollum (the best character in the series) and the battle of Helm's Deep (still the greatest battle sequence ever made). Amazingly the story in the book started with the battle with the Orac-Hai and ending with Frodo and Sam's battle with the spider Shelob, just think how much this film would tower over the other two is it was filmed this way

I saw The Return of the King, but my friend's television showed the film with such clarity that it looked terrible; I was unable to properly judge it; I don't know which film in the trilogy is the best. I think that The Fellowship of the Ring is better than The Two Towers, but The Two Towers definitely towers over the first film in certain respects.

great review, and don't worry, Return of the King will be much more apocalyptic, and honestly, my only complaints of the film were all in the destruction of the ring sequence, more though in the execution of the Frodo and Sam part.

I liked this averagely - this good review of good movie from Peter Jackson. I think I have watched this trilogy over 20 times.

I actually think "The Two Towers" is the best film of the trilogy. I thought the movie did a spectacular job at establishing its characters better, giving them more meaning to the grand scheme and overall message of the movie. The important dynamics of Sam and Frotto's friendship took place in the "Two Towers" while in "The Return of the King" it was more about finding ways to divide them. I also thought the action scenes were more exciting, darker, and grittier than any other installment. Th

Thanks for commenting! IMO, The Fellowship of the Ring is the best LoTR film, but each film has a distinct identity; it is difficult to determine which one is the best by comparison between similar qualities.
