"Kill white people and get paid for it? What's not to like?"
The year has only just started and i already have a candidate for my 10 films of 2013. 'Django Unchained' is fantastic film that continues to prove 'Tarantino' as one of the best directors of all time. I was a bit disappointed with 'Inglorious Bastards' not that i didn't like it, it was good - but it didn't wow me.
But this time around i was impressed. I'd only recently watched 'Reservoir Dogs' and whilst it doesn't quite reach the depth and greatness of that film it would easily make it in his top 5 - probably top 3. Like his previous work 'Jackie Brown' and films like 'Black Dynamite' it's partly a blaxploitation movie with the typical flair and style that those films had. Even the story is related with a black man down and rising to punish the white guys who hurt him - ok that's a bit brief but it definitely has all those elements.
It contains 'Tarantino's' usual style and flair with quick action that sometimes comes out of the blue and odd but interesting characters. It doesn't have anything i'd class as memorable but its constantly good the dialogue is always interesting and the characters continue to be intriguing. I think the first half of the film is stronger than the second half. It's paced perfectly and the winning nature of the pair at the start put a smile on my face and the interaction between 'Django' and 'Dr.Schultz' are really interesting. That's not to say the second half is a lot weaker because i'd have been disappointed if nothing bad happened to them, it would have been to easy and made for no tension or intrigue.
I loved seeing the complex nature of 'Dr. Schultz' he always seemed to have everything sorted i got the feeling he was a great tactician but there was still an air of mystery about him. He may well be my favourite of all of 'Quentin's' characters.
It's definitely the funniest of all his films. As usual it's darkly comic usually make fun of someone in pain or dead. It may not be for everyone but if you don't like that type of humor you won't be watching this film. It has a lot of funny quotes that i'm sure will be said by many after they watch the film.
It's more than likely going to be the first entry into my 2013 top 10 and is a wonderful addition to 'Quentin's portfolio of films. The subject matter may make some a bit uneasy but i din't feel uncomfortable much. It's probably his least violent film but not by much. A glorious, stylish and above all fun film.
