POKEMON THE FIRST MOVIE - MEWTWO VS. MEW is an atrocious mess of idiotic characters, laughably bad animation, corny dialogue, bland humor, a boring plot, and a theme that contradicts the entire point of the Pokemon franchise. Will probably be a tedious movie for anyone a) who is not a fan of Pokemon, b) over the age of 11, or c) doesn't know or get anything about Pokemon.
Even when I was 8 years old (and a huge fan of Pokemon) this movie was a complete bore. It's clogged up with lame (read, lame) fights between the actual Pokemon and their clones. No suspense or anything. The main villian, Mewtwo, is just bouncing his bubble shield against Mew's bubble shields. Not the least bit exciting.
The dialogue is so cheesy you can almost taste it. Among the cheesiest is when the immature Ash Ketchum shouts to Mewtwo, "A Pokemon can't be a Pokemon Master!" Does it really matter?
Yeah, about the characters. There's Ash, probably the most annoying of the bunch. There's Misty, meh, less irritating, but she's just plain boring. Then there's Brock, who goes on a tizzy when he sees an attractive girl. I know, hardy har har. A bunch of other random Pokemon trainers are thrown in, and of course they have to add in Team Rocket.
The animation is undeniably choppy - some of the worst I've ever seen. Horrible animation, just horrible. The animation is bad in the show, too. It would help if maybe they could at least try to animate better for the movie, to establish a better rep for the franchise, but no.
Don't even get me started on the "humor". A five-year-old could come up with better jokes right off the bat. Enough said.
Now, what about the theme? You know, this movie is coming from a show in which Pokemon fight each other unconscious in practically every episode, so their Trainers can obtain Badges or whatever, and sometimes they have their Pokemon battle just for the fun of it. Yet the theme is "fighting and violence is wrong". Not only is the theme constantly overused, it's just plain hypocritical coming from this movie. If they really think fighting and violence is wrong, then they should cancel the Pokemon TV show, stop making Pokemon movies, and pull all the Pokemon merchandise off the shelves.
