I've been meaning to see this for years, still haven't. Though now I have an added reason to watch this, with this movie's director Francis Lawrence directing Catching Fire. Great reveiw, though it does somewhat temper expectations. 1 Replies | Report Abuse

During this movie's ending, I threw my hands in the air and yelled out to everyone, "That stupid ending completely ruined this film!" Everyone sitting around me shook their heads in agreement. Months later, I saw this movie's alternate ending and had an argument with two friends about how the alternate would have saved the film. lol Christopher! I also preferred the alternate ending, maybe they thought it was too cliched for Will Smith to survive â?? but in this case I think it would only have made the film better. Very well detailed review, Alex. I was absolutely enchanted by this film since I first saw it, it's one of my all-time favorites. In my criterion this is a historical satire as brilliant as ''Dr. Strangelove'', and is a very rare film without a main character to say the least. I congratulate you for your deep and densely ellaborated characterization of references. I knew of the Antonio Margheriti detail, but you're definitely a much greater knower. this film's chapters are heavily abstract with each other (particularly ''Operation Kino'', whose bar scene is too long and distracts you completely from the storyline). I never seen "Dr. Strangelove", but read the dead serious novel which was meh. Everything in "Inglorious Basterds" is rich with depth. It's beyond the simple historical fantasy most take it for. The abstract ideas do eventually developed a significant meaning in the final act. As oppose to many historical films which are played straightforward. Excellent review! Truly one of the best I've ever read on RT. I disagree about your take on Foxx's performance, I thought he was settled into his role the first time we saw him with a face that completely expressed the hardships of Django's enslavement. He looked cold and defeated, yet determined to not let anyone or anything break him. Django's intelligence greatly progressed throughout the film, as did his confidence as a newly freed man. This Movie in my opinion is probably the best movie of 2012, It just edges Argo to it. Tarantino hit gold in this one, and with a powerful cast like that with an irresistable Waltz, it's bound to be brilliant. Great Review, Same rating from me. 1 Replies | Report Abuse

Great review Alex! Although Zemeckis is one of my favorite directors. Ok,the past 10 years with the 3 motion capture movies I can do without. I still liked them,but they're far from his best work. But he can combine special effects with storytelling like very few directors can and he's been doing it for years. Plus his has a versatile resume,he doesn't just stick to one genre. I could have done without his motion capture film too! Zemeckis to me has a better understanding of visuals and storytelling that James Cameron use to have. I admire him doing new things, but doesn't always come out good. I agree on Flight being save in the end. In the end though, Zemeckis return to live action is exactly what the industry needed.

Robert Z. is great at finding cool characters that the audience can root for and he proves that yet again with this film. I travel a lot and think about that crash scene every time I fly on an airplane. The scene is so effective because you can imagine it happening to you. I wanted this to be great because of all the obvious reasons concerning historical setting, characters, cast and visual style. Also because I was one of the few who loved the video game L.A. Noire, which I don't know if you've played, but is historically accurate and is just an amazing experience. Your arguments are magnificent, and even if this isn't the first-rate crime film we would have gotten under the direction of people like Chris Nolan, I expect it to be just entertaining. I played a few of video games, L.A. Noire being one of my top three favorite. It nails the feeling of being a detective; just wished everyone would stop complaining on how slow it is. Great review. I was really looking forward to seeing this, but I decided to avoid watching it in theaters after seeing the negative critical reception. It would be interesting to see the original cut of the film, since I have heard that it feels disjointed and that many arcs finish at odd points in the film due to the re-shooting after the tragic Colorado incident. 1 Replies | Report Abuse

Probably my favorite thing about the movie is the similarity to the Great Esacpe, as you mentioned. I don't know what it is about animated movies redoing Steve McQueen classics, this movie parodied The Great Escape and A Bugs Life parodied The Magnificent Seven. I still give this a chance for my love of the novels. What a mistake that was. Tyler Perry doesn't do the title character justice, it's as if he intentionally took this role to anger fans of the novel. Well both movies are really similar. I guess it depends on what cast members or the take on the story one's wants to take first. Matt Reeves respectfully remade this horror classic. Expect the same level of care in "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes".
