one of bergman's masterpieces,a great adventure story set in medieval sweden with some much deeper themes that a hard to describe in a review. there is also the iconic scene of the main character playing chess with death on the beach, which was a major influence for bill and ted's bogus journey.
jan dunn's second feature is once again a gritty piece of topical social realism that deals with the stereotypes and predujices that exist in society today. the film is led by a magnificent performance from bob hoskins that adds heart and soul to his character, he is flawed just like the rest of us, but still very much displays likeable qualities. the supporting cast (led by french actress josiane balasko) are all very impressive, and one of the main reasons this films message comes across so clearly.
