The Bling Ring

The Bling Ring

All bling but no ring. Sofia Coppola's directorial style works very well with what "The Bling Ring" encapsulates in pop culture extravagance and obsession, but her little cast disappoints. They were trying to portray that laissez-faire attitude of the real-life Bling Ring youngsters by hitting their cues in placement and line delivery, but it lacked a natural ease, making it forced and unintentionally funny when all is said and done. Furthermore, the plot was stretched a little too thin, exposing repetitive and inconsequential flaws even more. It is an intriguing story with distressing and utterly unbelievable moments, and while it is by no means a failure, Sofia Coppola can do better.

Richard Linklater's "Before" series is the closest masterpiece there is to a perfect film trilogy. In "Before Sunrise," we meet our young, passionate and inquisitive pair, as they take us on an unforgettable trip through Vienna. "Before Sunset," Paris 9 years later, and how they have matured. Another 9 years and almost two decades since their first encounter, Celine and Jesse show us once more how life can mold, how romance can change, and how conversations can spark. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy put into words meaningful opinions, plans and apprehensiveness, somewhat similar to what they have shared before, but in a very different context. Circumstances have changed, and so have they. But in the end, "Before Midnight" is just the way it should come to a close - bittersweet in that moment of an everlasting choice.

I've so much to say about "Celeste and Jesse Forever" yet there's nothing I can really put into words. Watch it.

Star Trek Into Darkness

Star Trek Into Darkness

2009's "Star Trek" brought about an up-to-date version of this long-running franchise by bringing a younger cast to a wider audience. 2013's "Star Trek Into Darkness" does just about the same thing, while making use of lots of lens flares and fitting "Prometheus" into its plot. Despite these two sticking points, I will say it is a sequel that does well in various regards: it is truly a fun and enjoyable summer blockbuster of action and visual satisfaction, it develops existing characters a little more while introducing new ones, and again opens it up to future sequels to come.
