    The Three Musketeers (2011)

I like a good swashbuckler, hell I like mediocre swashbucklers, this film has no buckle to swash (yeah that's what I said). The only actor who seemed right for his role is Ray Stevenson as Porthos, Athos seems to be trying a Alan Rickman impersonation, D'artagnan is arrogant to the point of annoyance, Constance could be out acted by a plank of wood and even Cristoph Waltz as Cardinal Richelieu seems caught between hamming it up and providing a real menacing threat. A Three Musketeers film with strange weapons and airships seems to beg for a fun, funny and campy approach but most of the jokes fall flat and it never embraces what camp it produces leaving it caught between vague attempts and fun and dour seriousness that it never earns. To top it all off Paul W.S. Anderson has no faith in this viewers, when he has a character bemoan that sleeping on the balcony will mean he will get shit on by birds he immediately follows it up with a shot of him getting shit on by birds, because you know the implication wasn't enough you had to know it actually happened. All for one, but no more of this for me.
