Donald's Review of Barbarella

    Barbarella (1968)

This movie was made when Jane Fonda was trying to be a sex kitten. The whole purpose of the film is to have her change outfits for every scene. It's an English language movie but made in Europe for an American audience. It's a good spoof of science fiction movies but has a very European flavor. After Jane Fonda got political she claimed she didn't like the movie. That's why you should watch it. The bad guys are called leather men and were the basis for the Cylons in Battlestar Galactica in 1978. Of course Battlestar Galactica ripped off many movies and TV shows. I remember seeing the ad for this movie in the Guthrie Daily Leader newspaper when it came out. It was the first Laserdisc I bought. There are some flaws in the Laserdisc at the end of the movie. Somehow the film slipped its sprockets while they were making the copy. The DVD is better and is in a wide screen mode.
