  • The Cell

    The Cell (2000)

    March 24, 2014

Before I heard of this film, I would have laughed at the idea that Vince Vaughn and JLo would be the leads in one of the best thrillers I would come to watch, but sure enough it happened. The visuals alone make this a worthwhile watch. You'll never see a thriller that looks quite like this one. A lot of art-inspired scenery makes for hauntingly beautiful yet uncomfortably suspenseful scenes. The idea of sympathy toward a mad killer is somewhat unique as well. The whole thing is simply very original, suspenseful, and interesting. Top notch thriller movie, and in my opinion very underrated (this is the first time in a while that my own rating does not match average critic and audience ratings).

Pretty experimental and sentimental, but rather off.

  • Batoru rowaiaru II: Chinkonka (Battle Royale II)

Batoru rowaiaru II: Chinkonka (Battle Royale ... (2003)

    February 15, 2014

Battle Royale is an amazing story, and with this sequel, all the potential flies out the door as any hope for a plot is replaced by the most forgettable and generic military battle sequences.

  • Ender's Game

I felt it did quite nicely, tackling the important themes and providing strong setup for the rest of the story, if and when it comes.

  • Versus

    Versus (2000)

Intentionally minimalistic; the dialogue could all fit on a couple pages, and the plot, even less. For this reason, you have to love gory violence a lot to not get bored from the near complete lack of story. Camera angles are used in a crafty way to emphasize the manga-like caricaturization of action, but there's not much to praise beyond that.

An entertaining treatment, kinda funny, highlights female empowerment.

  • The Tournament

    The Tournament (2009)

I almost want to say you can't come up with a worse product even if you tried. Think: the worst possible iteration of Battle Royale humanly imaginable.

  • Ponyo

The audience is too generous with the praise, IMO. Unworthy.

  • Don Jon

    Don Jon (2013)

Cleverly points out a few oddities in the double standards of the sexes and ends on a confusing/unconvincing note. I'm a JGL fan but this is my least favorite.

  • Captain Phillips

Tom Hanks is quite skillful here, one of his best.
