Sitting through this was like visiting your awesome and funny Grandfather, who has sadly been stricken with Alzheimer's. You spend the time feeling nostalgic and remembering all the great times you had together, but seeing him like this -- crudely rambling and not acting like the Grandfather of your youth -- is just depressing. After the visit, it's best to go home and put on the old home movies of those good times and laugh, because magic like that cannot be replicated.
One of the most well crafted and highly ambitious character studies I have ever seen. And the play-like atmosphere set by the long, single angle Steadi-cam shots coupled with stand-out performances locks "Birdman" down as not only the best film of the year, but career milestones for every player involved, especially Keaton, Norton, and Stone.
A fantastic performance by Gyllenhaal outshines the most of what is a mildly above average, satirical look at news consumption in today's world, coupled with a stinging take on the millennial world view.
