One of my favorite movies of 2011. It smartly embraces the tried and trued sport film formula and mixes it with a little father-son drama and throws in some really fun and exciting robot fights. The makers of the film knew exactly what kind of film they were making and just dove in and decided to have fun, and I could feel the fun they had making it on the screen. It's hard to have more simple fun at the movies.
While the third act doesn't quite seem to fit with the rest of the film, Sunshine as a whole is still a marvelous film. The visuals are fresh and inspired, the story is intelligent without ever being pretentious or feeling contrived, and the drama feels real. As a story about survival and madness it works very well, as mentioned its third act feels out of place because it is the only part of the film that feels derivative, but taken as a whole it's good enough that when you finish it won't bother you. Cillian Murphy did a great job in the lead role and he had a solid supporting cast. It's a sci-fi film that succeeds both artistically as well as intellectually, take that Avatar.
