I think this was unfairly critiqued. It was actually quite fun.. and a very good western after a long time. Armie Hammer was quite good with a lovable character and we can't really fault Johnny Depp with anything, where his quirkiness was equivalent to Sparrow. I've always loved William Fichtner in practically everything he does. Barry Pepper was underplayed, even though he's a pretty good actor himself. And then we have Tom Wilkinson, who's pretty darn good as well. The action was awesome, the jokes / slapstick was funny and the origin story was good. Obviously had a few negatives, in terms of the leading lady and I seriously wish this was done in 3D 'cos they had that epic scenery and action to go with it. It was as if it was done FOR 3D, without it being it. And when the theme music starts at the end of the final battle; that was epic! (even though it ran for little too long, making it feel a tad comical).
