(4 Stars) I got exactly what I was expecting and I loved The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. I laughed a lot. You can claim the riches to rags story has been done, but the characters are so funny. I love the egotistical Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell), the under-appreciated Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi), the "straight man" Jane (Olivia Wilde), the legendary Rance Holloway (Alan Arkin) and the insane mind rapist Steve Gray (Jim Carrey). I loved the jealous, dueling magicians concept from the moment I first heard of the film; this is ripe for absurd comedy. And for the most part, they did it right. I don't know why, but it seems like it's been a while since I've seen a comedy live up to its bizarre concept.
There are some neat practical magic effects and Jim Carrey's parody of Criss Angel is hilarious. I think its getting more flack than it deserves because it follows a story structure that's been done many times (heck, a ton of Stephen Chow's movies do the "selfish expert falls on his face, but gets back to his feet while learning a valuable lesson" story). But The Incredible Burt Wonderstone is a very funny movie that's probably going to be very underrated.
