This is one of my favorite movies, period. It's far off-center, but even granting that the low audience rating is a head-scratcher. The heart of the movie isn't the relationship between Patrick Dempsey and Jennifer Connelly; it's the one between Dempsey and the wonderful, luminous Lila Kedrova. Give it a try - and give yourself over to it. A gem.
The idea that this is some sort of homage to Raymond Carver is astonishingly perverse. One could go on, but one example will do. Anyone who knows Carver's story "A Small Good Thing" is bound to find the treatment of it in this film so remarkable a misreading that they'll wonder whether Altman read a translation of a translation of a second-hand retelling by someone whose source read it in the dark.
