SUNSHINE SUSIE (THE OFFICE GIRL)

FIVE STARS

GB 1931, Directed by: Victor Saville, with: Renate Müller, Jack Hulbert, Owen Nares, Morris Harvey.

Susie Surster (Renate Müller) comes to Vienna to work as a typist. She has nothing, but her self-confidence. She is that kind of hard-working, light-hearted woman, that can accomplish everything she wants, just by being herself. She manages to get a job, but her boss tries to make her pay for that job, with sexual favours. When she refuses to fulfill his demands, he makes her work extra-hours. And that is, when she meets the Director Herr Arvray (Owen Narres). She has no idea who he is and goes out with him. The Director has the time of his life and it takes until morning, when Susie realizes whom she went out with.

The story of this comedy is nothing new, nothing unique, but since Renate Müller is my favourite actress, and I like her way of acting very much, I loved it. The songs were just as successful as the whole movie. "Sunshine Susie" was shot in England, after the German version "Die Privatsekretärin" became a huge success. And "Sunshine Susie" became famous throughout Europe and the USA. The German version is lost, but this English version has survived and it is on youtube right now.
Listen to Renate Müller sing "Today I Feel So Happy":

Happy New Year.

My dear Flixster-Friends,

since the new Flixster has arrived and I do not agree with it and fear that the community will disappear soon, this will be my last review.

I will miss you all awfully, so please just write me a message, if you want to stay in touch.

My last review and my legacy, will be the recommendation of my favourite movie...

DIE ENGLISCHE HEIRAT (THE ENGLISH MARRIAGE)

FIVE STARS

Germany 1934, Director: Reinhold Schünzel, Book: Ludwig von Wohl, Camera: Friedl Behn-Grund, Music: Franz Doelle.
With: Renate Müller, Anton Walbrook, Georg Alexander, Adele Sandrock.

Gerte Winter (Renate Müller) is a drivingschool-teacher. She built her own car and is pretty and independent. Douglas Mavis (Georg Alexander), a rich heir from England, proposes to her and they get secretly married in Berlin. When Douglas goes back to England, to tell his despotic Grandmother (Adele Sandrock) about his wife, he simply fails. His Grandma makes the decisions and she has other plans for him.

Gerte comes to England and learns what a wimp her husband is. His Grandma is sure the German wife must be a cheap blackmailer. And when nightclub-singer Bella Amery (Hilde Hildebrand) shows up (also to marry Douglas), the Grandmother is sure that she must be the cheap German girl. In the meantime Gerte sneaks into the lordly family and becomes friends with the old lady. She finds a good friend and accomplice in Warwick Brent (Anton Walbrook), who is the family's lawyer and who seems to be such a better match for her.

You will notice that the director and all actors were very famous in Germany in the early 30's. And they all were disliked by the Nazis. So this is an independent movie, from a little studio, which refused to follow the rules for films the Nazis established in 1933.

GROßE FREIHEIT NR. 7

FOUR STARS

Germany 1944, Directed by: Helmut Käutner, Written by: Helmut Käutner, Richard Nicolas.
With: Hans Albers, Ilse Werner, Hilde Hildebrand, Hans Söhnker, Gustav Knuth.

Hannes Kröger (Hans Albers) used to be a sailor, but now he is singing in the "Hippodrome" in St. Pauli. This club has everything a sailor needs: music, whores, schnapps and the opportunity to ride horses and donkeys. Anita (Hilde Hildebrand) owns the club and she is the kind of hard-boiled, lonely woman you would expect to run such an etablissement.

Hannes longs to be back at sea, he does not belong ashore. When his brother dies, he takes care of his brother's bride Gisa (Ilse Werner). Gisa lives in a small village and gets ostracized by the other inhabitants, for being a sailors-whore. So Hannes takes her with him to Hamburg. He appears to be rough and farouche, but he is tender hearted. And he slowly begins to fall in love with Gisa. For the first time in his life.

Very untypical for a movie from 1944 is the surreal dream-sequence. Some scenes were shot in Prague, instead of Hamburg. Hamburg was way too much destroyed in 1944 to be the setting for the movie. After they finished "Große Freiheit Nr. 7", it got forbitten at once. It had everything the Nazis did not want. The hero was not as heroic as they wanted it to be, his piercing blue eyes looked way too insane in many scenes. And Hans Albers was one of those actors the Nazis would have liked to get rid of, but who was too famous to let him just disappear.

Watch some scenes of the movie in 4 minutes:

Human beings are strange aren't they lol. Sometimes you just can't figure them out! Haha Nicholas Sparks adaptations are something I`d rather avoid. I`ve only seen THE NOTBOOK, DEAR JOHN, and A WALK TO REMEMBER (which I still think is the worst) and that was enough for me. I find it hard to believe that people can be fans of these films at all.

I'll start out by saying that "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is one of the greatest things ever to play on TV!

I had a good time with Bad Teacher. I didn't love it, but I gave it 7/10 because I laughed a lot and appreciated all the subtle humor thrown in as well as most of the performances (Diaz especially who I never like was good here in my opinion). For me, comedy is the genre that is hardest to rate... It's so subjective that I can only make a rating based on how much I enjoyed the film. And I certainly enjoyed it. It didn't go anywhere beyond its basic premise but that was OK... I enjoyed what was on display. That was enough for me. Sometime a comedy just works and this was one of those times.

I agree. It's a movie you can't hate for that very reason. HAHA I guess that was a good enough reason to watch it; my reason was I had nothing better to do. Yeah, that's true, He didn't look THAT terrible or THAT beastly. The open cuts looked stupid though. Bad choice of face makeup to be honest.

I watched "Clueless" right after, and the joy of that film erased those 90 minutes. It's like it never happened.

Hey, it's Booklover again, and the Top 100 list is finally created! If you have trouble finding it, go to my profile and look for the list called: Top 100 Best Flixster Films, According to Several Users. I gave credit to you, as you helped out, so tell me what you think of the list and send it to friends! Thanks for helping!

booklover11

Yo, it's your friend Booklover11, and if you receive this message, you're not the only one. I sent this to all my friends, and I hope you'll do the same. Why am I doing this, you might ask. Well, do you know that 100 Years 100 movies list? It was the top 100 movies decided by the American Film Institute that was on television. Several years ago, they made a tenth anniversary edition, with new movies thrown in. So, since that list, in many people's opinion, is missing so many great movies, I was thinking to do a new one, except this time, with you. Here's how it'll work: After you receive this message, send it off to your friends (Optional) and then send me a message saying that you're interested. In about a month or so, I'll send you a message to tell me your favorite movies. You can either tell me your favorite movies in the message, or tell me to look at your favorite movies list, and I'll handle it from there. You need at least 10 movies in your favorites to be allowed, and if you receive this message and you're not Booklover11's friend, add him/me. So, after all that trouble, in a month or two, the list will be up, with special thanks to all that helped. So, just send Booklover11 a message saying you want to help out, and when you receive the second message about you favorite movies tell me or tell me to check out your list. Hope you'll help. Thanks!

No need to explain, I actually saw Date Movie in theaters. I have no way of defending myself for that either!!!

I Completely believe that man. I got the movie free on Blu-Ray (along with "27 Dresses" and "The Day After Tomorrow") when I bought my new Blu Ray player. I spent 20 minutes adjusting the brightness of my TV and checking the settings. I thought my brand new player was faulty. Then I popped another movie in and it was fine. I checked online and I discovered it was just the way the movie was shot. I COULD NOT BELIEVE that a film with such a technical error could have been release like that. It was unwatchable! Haha if I would have seen this trash at the theater, I would have definitely told management that the projector was broken! Just ridiculous.

YLOWBSTARDreturns
Michael S 3 years ago

I've been watching the film often since I was like 8, so maybe nostalgia has something to do with it.

Out of curiosity, did you watch the theatrical cut or the "Ultimate" director's cut? The theatrical cut is the only version I'll watch. It's more gritty and has a darker feel. The Director's cut was a re-edit that tried to update the film and make it have a more modern comic book style (in the edits and stupid on-screen fonts). It changed the feel of the film completely and not in a good way. The theatrical is far superior.

THE WOMAN IN RED

THREE AND A HALF STARS

USA 1935, Directed by: Robert Florey. With: Barbara Stanwyck, Gene Raymond, Genevieve Tobin, John Eldredge and Dorothy Tree.

Shelby Barret (Barbara Stanwyck) a professional rider, works for Miss Nicko and is a very down to earth girl. She cares for her horses, steals sugar-blocks for them on fancy parties and knows very well to be loyal to Nicko, who pays her salary. When Shelby meets Johnny, a Polo-player, she starts to fall in love with him. And he feels the same way. Nicko does not approve of that, she want Johnny for herself and tries to get rid of Nicko with throwing her out, spreading rumours and playing some evil tricks on her. But Johnny elopes with Shelby and marries her. Just his family, the Wyatts of Wyattville, are not happy with his decision. No one is willing to lend the young couple some money, so they could start their own business. No one, but Eugene Fairchild. A friend of Shelby, but not a friend of Johnny. Shelby keeps the loan a secret. When Fairchild gets accused of murder Shelby is the only person who can testify his innocence. But if she does, it would mean to tell the whole world that she betrayed her husband...he might not love her anymore after that.

The ending is tyical post-code. A different ending would have made the whole movie a little spicier. Barbara acts...no, she does not act much, but her role is very uninspired. Too neat and morally harmless. And the male leading role? Gene Raymond is lame. Not a match for Barbara. The whole story is like Shelby, nice, but uninteresting. But still you can pass some time with ?The Woman in Red?. The costumes are pretty, especially when you keep in mind that Orry-Kelly designed them. Very decent.

FOUR STARS

Austria 2004, Directed by: Clemens Schönborn, Camera: Michael Weihrauch, Eva Wolf Music: Max Knoth, Produzent: Markus Fischer.
With: Sophie Rois, Bernhard Schütz, Hertha Schell, Susi Stach, Marek Wlodarczyk, Georg Friedrich, Lukas Miko, Gudrun Tielsch.

"The catastrophe comes, because we dream it. And we dream it, because we fear it. And long for it."

Fräulein Phyllis is around 40, pretends to be a writer, spends her days in bed, philosophises about the wickedness of the world, smokes pot...and lives with her mother. They two live the perfect love-hate relationship. Phyllis gives her mother's clothes away to strangers, likes to tell that her mother is suffering from cancer and will die soon. She inscenes her everyday-life. Plays around with people and their feelings. Everything is a game, everything is a lie, everything is manipulation.

Her mother isn't shy either. She cleans her feet with Phyllis' toothbrush, talks ill to Phyllis' date, and she wants her daughter to move out and to get a work!! Well, Phyllis feels pretty comfortable with her lazy life, and she is willing to get active to sustain her luxery way of living.

Oh, and then there is Henry. A soap actor. He gets involved with Phyllis and sniffs the chance to change his life. He knows Phyllis makes his life interesting. A lot of people die in traffic "accidents" and there are evidences and witnesses they have to get rid of.

Would I say there is one person in this movie, who gives a shit about morals and conventions? No.

Haha very understandable, but negative buzz and even bad trailers rarely keep me from seeing a movie, especially one associated to a previous movie or movies I really liked (I thought Pirated 4 looked and sounded horrible, but I liked it). I didn't expect to like it, but I also didnt expect to hate it, which I did.

Also, you'd be surprised how many people are liking/loving this film. My theatre was jammed and everyone was laughing constant and going nuts even though nothing was funny and the repeat joked were embarrassing. Even here on Flixster, a lot of people are liking it which I don't understand.

I expected a mediocre movie but got a terrible one. I'm not complaining, just shedding light on what the film is... Shit lol. Don't see it. It's as DUH as the trailer made you believe.

VIKTOR UND VIKTORIA

FIVE STARS

Germany 1933, Directed by: Reinhold Schünzel, Camera: Konstantin Irmen-Tschet, Music: Franz Doelle, Produzent: Alfred Zeisler.
With: Hermann Thimig, Renate Müller, Adolf Wohlbrück, Fritz Odemar, Hilde Hildebrand, Aribert Wäscher.

Susanne Lohr, a non-successful singer, meets Viktor Hempel, a non-successful actor. He wants to play Shakespeare, but makes his money by singing, dressed up like a woman, in a varieté. One night he has a bad cold and can't sing. He needs his fee and so Susanne agrees to sing for him. She dresses up as a man, who pretends to be a woman and she is a huge success on stage! Thanks to her new agent she makes an international career. Suddenly Susanne has everything she ever wanted: she makes a lot of money with her singing and lives a comfortable life. Things start to get complicated, when Susanne falls in love...with Robert, who thinks she is a man...and all the women fall in love with Susanne, the pretty man "Viktoria".

This is one of the funniest, most light-hearted movies I have ever seen. Highly delightful, but never corny or over the edge. Renate Müller was a perfect comedienne, with a lovely voice. And she did look good in a suit! She makes me laugh out loud, when she does not want to change in the men's changeroom, has to accompany Robert to the barber-shop and gets shaved, nearly uses her powder-case while sitting at the bar and flirts with women to keep up her mask.

"Fräulein Susanne, be a man!"

Forget about the Julie Andrews version, watch the original.

Click on the picture below to see Renate Müller sing "I Got a Little Castle in Spain". Yes. In English.

JESUS CHRISTUS ERLÖSER ein Abend mit Klaus Kinski
(JESUS CHRIST SAVIOUR an evening with Klaus Kinski)

FIVE STARS

Germany 2008, Directed by: Peter Geyer, Music: Florian Käppler, Daniel Requardt, with: Klaus Kinski

"People only think that bad manners are a privilege, because nobody slaps their mouths."

On November 20th 1971, Klaus Kinski recites his 30 pages-masterpiece "Jesus Christ Saviour" in front of 5000 people in Berlin. Part of the audience hangs on every word Kinski says, but the rest has a different reason to be there...to disturb him and to see him go wild! And it is easy to piss him off, Kinski reacts to every interjection, shouts at those villains, leaves the stage, comes back, recites again, asks the troublemakers to come onto stage, kicks them off the stage again, leaves again, shouts again, recites again...

...he finally finishes this evening, long after midnight, in front of a few hundred people.

Klaus Kinski was an amazing actor, with an enormous stage presence. He cries as he recites, he transports his emotions through his text and the way he recites. I would give my right leg, if I could have been there that night!

"This riffraff is more fucked up than the Pharisees. At least they let Jesus talk before they nailed him up."

Absolutely, That's precisely why I loved MARTYRS. It felt like a progressive horror film of sorts, and never felt like gore for gore's sake.

Completely agree with you on SERBIAN (even though I liked it; 6/10). I too got suckered by the promise of shock and awe, but the reason I enjoyed it was just how ridiculous it was, how obvious the political message was and how hypocritical it all seemed. Also I laughed a lot, and I know that wasn't the films intention. I just enjoyed it for the hilarious mess it was and didn't find it nearly as shocking or perverse as everyone said. And I did watch the Uncut version.

I've been wanting to revisit that film because multiple people have told me that it's art, genius, beautiful blah blah blah and I've just wanted to see if my opinion would be swayed on second viewing; hell I own it so why not lol. But you are right... It may just not be my thing.

Despite everything that has been said about IN THE REALM, all the acclaim, and a few people I know really liking it, I just can't bring myself to actually watch it. Just sounds like a completely unpleasant experience. But I also liked A SERBIAN film and absolutely loved MARTYRS which I just watched yesterday, so maybe I should give it a shot at some point because like you said some things just click with you and some just don't.

letitsnow4
Arny Boy 3 years ago

Yeah I agree. Election and Freeway are two favorites of mine, and Witherspoon has never been better (though she was also great in Walk the Line). All of the generic throwaway film she has been in lately are hurting her career. It's the daring projects (like the ones previously mention and Cruel Intentions, pleasantville, Fear etc) hat made me a fan and I think are the reasons that people started to take note to begin with.

Atleast Water For Elephants looks promising.

...the beautiful and amazing Hannelore Elsner in

MEIN LETZTER FILM (MY LAST MOVIE)

FIVE STARS

Germany 2002, Directed by: Oliver Hirschbiegel, Writer: Bodo Kirchhoff.
With: Hannelore Elsner.

This movie is a one-woman show. The gorgeous and alluring Hannelore Elsner plays Marie, an aging actress. Marie hires a cameraman to shoot her last movie. She walks through her flat and "packs and talks". She talks about life itself, the three important men in her life and the most important woman, her best friend Bess.

She plans to leave her life and start a new one, but before that, she wants to balance accounts with her old life. And she does it in the most wonderful way, with the most wonderful words. You may think that there is nothing as boring as watching an old woman walking around, screaming, talking, smoking....but you are so wrong!

"Men like to feign death, when it is getting serious."

"Question: When is a beautiful woman dead?
-When her heart is still beating, but she is not desired by everyone anymore.
-When she can never look at herself in the mirror again, because she is lying in her grave.
-Or maybe long before that, when she cannot stand the sight of herself anymore."

"My eyes are beautiful and will always be beautiful, because they respond glances."

You know I remember 1997 as a good year for acting in general so I'm not sure exactly why she won the Oscar but she did a good enough job...I would've liked to see Julianne Moore win for BOOGIE NIGHTS or Bridget Fonda for JACKIE BROWN (which wasn't even nominated) - for that matter Pam Grier deserved Best Actress and wasn't nominated for JACKIE BROWN either :/

DER BLAUFUCHS (THE ARCTIC FOX)

FOUR STARS

Germany 1938, Directed by: Victor Tourjansky, with: Zarah Leander, Willy Birgel, Paul Hörbiger, Jane Tilden, Karl Schönböck, Rudolf Platte.

Ilona Paulus (Zarah Leander) is the wife of a forgetful professor (Paul Hörbiger). He oversees her and is very devoted to his work. Ilona meets her husband's best friend Tibor (Willy Birgel), an adventurous pilot....and starts to fall for him.

The story is not amazingly witty, the costumes are a little funny and the characters stereotypes, it is nothing you haven't seen before. So why the four stars? Because I have a thing for that beautiful, tall, red-headed swedish woman, with her deep, dark voice. She gives me the goosebumps when she sings. And she sings twice in this movie.

HARDCOVER

FOUR STARS

Germany 2008, Directed by: Christian Zübert, Camera: Jules van den Steenhoven, Writer: Christian Zübert.
With: Lukas Gregorowicz, Wotan Wilke Möhring, Justus von Dohnányi, Anna Dereszowska, Lisa Potthoff, Charly Hübner, Filip Peeters.

Christoph, a 31-year old guy, wants to be a crime-story author, but the only pieces he writes get published in penny dreadfuls. He works in a car rental, is unchallenged and suffers from a "quarter-life-crisis" and from being uninspired and too shy to change his life for the better. Or to change it at all!

He scents the change of his life, when he catches Dominik, a small-time crook, who tries to steal a car from that car rental. He saves him from being arrested and Dominik offers to show Christoph his exciting life as a criminal. So Christoph can write a "hardcover, four-colored envelope, 500 pages"-biography.

Soon the truth hits Christoph hard. Dominik's life is as boring as his own! All he does is to eat pizza, smoke pot and join radio lotteries. He even moves in with Christoph and lives on his couch...until Christoph himself witnesses a muder, committed by Dominik's Boss. Now, he is part of the criminal scene of Düsseldorf.

Very funny indeed. So, the question is: "Are you fit for fun?"

Germany 1998, Directed by: Beatrice Manowski, Writer: Beatrice Manowski, Wolfgang Büld.
With: Beatrice Manowski, Erdal Yildiz, Axel Pape, Martina Schießer, Robert Viktor Minich, Lars Pape, Péter Horkay, Jürgen Görlitz.

Marion Niplowski leaves her boyfriend, who is an alcoholic and not satisfying her sexually nor finacially. To get the flat she wants, she pretends to be a private investigator. She soon gets tangled up in a weird story of "blood, coke and sex" and husbands she shall convict being unfaithful to their wives.

You could call this movie art...or pure trash. I was fooled by the title and thought it would be porn, but it is more kind of an experimental drug-trip. A mixture of scenes filmed in an homevideo-style present a fast-but-nonsense-talking female lead, a lunatic janitor with a drilling machine, lesbian businesswomen and a sleazy club-owner.

Some quotes to emphasize the style of this movie:

"My pussy is my business."

"Why do you fondle my pussy? Do you think you will find some information in there?"

THE TURN OF THE SCREW

UK 2009, Directed by: Tim Fywell, Camera: Tony Miller, Music: John Lunn.
With: Michelle Dockery, Sue Johnston, Dan Stevens, Nicola Walker, Eva Sayer, Josef Lindsay, Sarah Buckland, Edward MacLiam, Mark Umbers, Corin Redgrave, Wendy Albiston.

Based on the short story by Henry James, this movie really strikes a nerve. I am very prone to victorian ghost-stories. Give me an old house, a cemetery in the garden and isolation from the rest of the world and I am satisfied.

In 1921 a psychiatrist tries to find out, what it was, that the young Ann Giddens drove to commit murder. She has nothing to lose and tells him her story. After WW I she gets hired to be the governess for two orphaned children. All the domestic servants are women and she learns fast, that they don't want men to interfere with their isolated domicile. Men are brutal and act arbitraily, they force sex and it is hard to struggle against them. Soon Ann gets the feeling that there is something wrong. She sees figures and hears voices, that seem to be hallucinations. When she learns from the housekeeper, that the former gouverness has committed suicide and a male servant came to death under mysterious circumstances, Ann is convinced, that their ghosts are trying to posess the children to use them for their dark purposes.

I FOUND STELLA PARISH

3,5 STARS

USA 1935, Directed by: Mervyn LeRoy, Produced by: Harry Jow Brown.
With: Kay Francis, Ian Hunter, Paul Lukas, Sybil Jason, Jesse Ralph.

Stella Parish is a very famous theatre actress in England. She is popular, but her private lives remain a mystery in public. One day a vistor comes by and blackmails Stella. She decides to leave for the USA immediately. In disguise. To save her child from being harmed by the revelation of a dark, dark secret from the past. Nobody knows where StelIa is, just a clever journalist finds out. He sneaks into her life, makes her trust him and reveals her identity to the public. Not knowing what consequences he is triggering by it.

I was anxcious to watch this movie, because watching Kay Francis is always a great pleasure to me. The movie starts out a bit lame, but surely has some funny moments. One scene is outstanding and shows what a great actress Kay was. She is marvelous in the "press-conference"-scene. Other movies gave Kay more chances to show what she was able to do with her way of acting and she looked better in other movies, too. But this one is watchable, nevertheless.

FLIC OU VOYOU (COP OR HOOD)

ONE STAR

France 1979, Directed by: Georges Lautner, Camera: Henri Decaë, Music: Phillippe Sarde.
With: Jean-Paul Belmondo, Marie Laforêt, Michel Galabru, Georges Géret, Claude Brosset.

Crime Inspector Bertrand and a young prostitute get killed in a hotel room in Nice. While the police is trying to conceal the crime, Antonio Cerutti (Jean-Paul Belmondo) tries to solve the crime in his own way, with his own methods.

I have seen this misery happen before. In the late 70?s, early 80?s they made a bunch of tasteless, boring crime movies in France. I have seen it happen to Depardieu and now to Belmondo. Those movies pretend to have a fast pace, to show a hard-boiled hero, who is not willing to compromise. But what pretends to be funny, is just dull. What pretends to show a badass hero, just shows a disgusting, shallow and lame asshole character.

Anyone has the right to come up with an adaptation, you're right on that one. BUT, I find it rather stupid, in lack of better word, to come up with a re-adaptation of something that has been adapted within no less of 3 years. And well, this time it was 3 years, but what about "[Rec]", remade within only a year by Hollywood? I'm sorry man, but this is nothing but Hollywood trying to make profits out of european successful films, when those originals passed almost unnoticed through american soil.

Oddly I put my glasses under my 3-D glasses (my prescription spectacles aren't so big) and that made it stay in focus - what I found however was thanks to a warning at the beginning that the 3-D and 2-D are intercut so after I realized what part early on was in 2-D I kept the glasses off until they went to 3-D (which I think was just the TRON universe stuff and the very beginning title sequence/teaser)... I would switch as needed but at times it was hard to tell what was 3-D and 2-D because it was out of focus anyway! :(

magnolia12883
Eric Wilkinson 3 years ago

The thing that bugs me about 3-D is that it makes films darker (due to the glasses) - and in that particular case (We're talking about TRON:LEGACY?) - the film is dark enough to begin with... :(

Eric Wilkinson 3 years ago

Yeah - coulda lived without seeing it in the theater (and 3-D) - no choice - at least it was almost free because of Christmas gift card madness :) Still...for what it is - a sound & light show in service of an impenetrable plot (I don't mean "impenetrable" as it incomprehensible per say - so much as I dare any of you to give a scintilla of a fuck about what happens!) and very forgettable dialogue/characters...for what it is...passable...(if only just)

I recommend you see...

...this adaption of:

KRANKHEIT DER JUGEND (Disease Of Youth)

FOUR STARS

Germany 2010, Directed by: Dieter Berner, Camera: Dennis Pauls, Music: Daniel Dickmeis.
With: Stella Hilb, Matthias Weidenhöfer, Alina Levshin, Janin Stenzel, Nora Huetz, Florens Schmidt, Sebastian Brandes.

Seven young medical students live in Freder's house. Some are rich, some are poor and they are all very fond of using drugs. Freder owns the place and has an affair with Lucy, his cleaningwoman. And he likes to play around with his roommates feelings. Marie and Bubi want to move into their own flat- until Bubi falls in love with Irene. Daisy takes her chance to seduce Marie, Alf also wants to fuck Marie and Freder wants to marry her.

Although the play by Ferdinand Bruckner is from 1926, the search for moral standards and something you can rely on is very up-to-date.

I am really not in the mood for christmas this year. So I thought the only way to get into the right mood is to watch one christmas- movie after another.

My first try is:

LANGER SAMSTAG

FOUR STARS

Germany 1992, Directed by: Hanns Christian Müller, Camera: James Jacobs, Music: Hanns Christian Müller, Produzent: Harald Kügler.
With: Gisela Schneeberger, Campino, Dieter Pfaff, Ottfried Fischer, Emmanuèle Riva, Axel Milberg, Antje Späth, Hans Brenner, Jürgen Hart, Elisabeth Welz.

On the last long shopping Saturday before christmas (until 6 p.m.- remember it was the 90's and it was Germany. 6 p.m. was unbelievable late!) Susi, who works in a gas station, get?'s thrown out. She tries to talk with her boss, but he is hard to find in the big shopping mall "Poldi". Her mother is phoning her constantly, her ex- husband tries to get her back for christmas and it couldn't be more stressful for Susi. But then meets Toni, a young punk, who offers to help her...but in a different way than she has on her mind.

RE:Hellraisers
Some advice since I did watch 'em all with the exception of the fan-made Prophecy back when I was on my "watch every film in a horror franchise" kick about two years ago.

Mostly, he movies only continue to degrade in quality as you go. Basically Miramax had a few set pieces of Cenobites and several scripts where they were contractually obligated to produce something for that writer, so they just started smacking those two together and pumping out "Hellraiser movies".

I actually enjoyed Bloodline because it weaves all these different timelines together and successfully films some amazing set designs both past period and future ones set in space (and tells the story of the designer of the puzzlebox). Still, I'm in a minority on liking that one as many other horror fans tend to accuse it of too much idea theft from Event Horizon and they get confused by the timeline jumps (but I reckon that may simply be their own intellectual problem and not a script one). Also the Deader entry is one of the few later films that tries to reconnect with the spirit of the original, succeeds on some levels, and has developed a cult following of its own as a result (ironic since the film is about a cult obsessed with Cenobites).

fernandorafael

Johnny Flash

FOUR STARS

Germany 1986, Directed by: Werner Nekes, Camera: Bernd Upnmoor and Serge Roman, Music: Helge Schneider, Produzent: Werner Nekes.
With: Helge Schneider, Andreas Kunze, Heike Melba-Fendel, Marianne Traub.

Jürgen Potzkothen (Helge Schneider) is an unemployed electrician, who shares a flat with his mother and wants to become a Schlager musician. He works hard to make his dream come true and finally two agents fight over him.

"If I can't hold you, I won't stay with you...." A very catchy tune.

Most of the roles were played by Helge Schneider and Andreas Kunze. All the musicians in this movie were played by Helge. (He even acts as a punk musician called "Christoph Schlingensief"!) It's pure trash and it's hilariously funny.

LWOODS04

Wow what a combination..

fernandorafael

"Emma Stone seems to be the only person not embarrassed and actually happy to be in the movie, which is sad because she deserves way better."

Hahaha Sorry to have pissed you off man! I too was watching the BLACK SWAN trailer like 15 times daily... I'm so glad I got to see it early! It's kind of a curse at the same time too because now I REALLY REALLY REALLY can't wait to see it again when it get's it's official release (it's a film that DEMANDS multiple viewings).

So many people have been asking me for details, and I've avoided spoiling anything so far, so I'll do the same and not spoil anything for you. But on Ryder (one of my all time fav actresses) she has a small role. Not a cameo but a small 7-10 minute role. But, I'll tell you this without spoiling anything; her character is important and is mentioned and seen via photographs throughout the picture.

But tell your friend this: I saw the film at TIFF with complete cast, crew in attendance, aswell as most of north america's top critics, and while the film got EXTRAORDINARY buzz (for awards etc), Ryder got equal buzz. I don't think it's her best performance or anything but it's just one of those things along the lines of WILLIAM HURT in A History of Violence, which means SHE WILL DEFINATELY be up for Best Supporting Actress awards this Award season. At of all the actors in the film, she definately got the most buzz and acclaim. It'll be her official comeback.

Unrelated note, I think Portman will win Best Actress. The film will be up for most awards imaginable.

Le Pendu (Der Gehenkte)

FIVE STARS

France 2006, Directed by: Claire Devers, Camera: Thomas Hardmeier, Music: Jérôme Charles and Film Music Services, Produzent: BFC Productions and ARTE F.
With: Dominique Blanc, Dominique Reymond, Eric Ruf, Denis Podalydès, Aymen Saidi, Jean-Paul Bonnaire, Jean-Noël Broute.

Based on ?The Third Person? by Henry James, this movie is really delightful. Two cousins, who never met each other before, inherit an old house on a little island. They have to fulfill one condition or the community will get the whole heritage: to live in that house together. Suzanne and Alma, both quirky characters that couldn?t be more different, start out on a treasure hunt through the whole house, but what they find is not gold or money. Just a ghost. After being scared at first, their feelings towards the handsome, executed Gustave change quickly. They both try to get near him, spend time with him and are very jealous of every minute the other women spends in his company.

I am SOOOOOO excited for this movie, but really because it's Aja & Levasseur and those guys are my favorite director/producer duo in horror right now. I am really intrigued to see how thy handle the 3d and the blend of different effects styles. If Hills Have Eyes proved anything (in addition to adding to the short list of good remakes), it's that practical and CG gore can successfully coexist.

Same here. I don't like red wine at all, but everytime I'm reading in this book, I feel like I should get some. The same effect had "The Brotherhood of the Grape" by John Fante on me. I read a lot of stuff by Bukowski and I was never disappointed. His style of writing is amazing, it goes right to my heart and the stories never pretend to be more than they are. Maybe our lifes should be just about writing, drinking and women?

kylemydude

Yeah, Zodiac was great, and it shares a few actors with Shutter Island, Koteas, Ruffalo, and John Carroll Lynch. Which is funny because it seems like a Fincher production.

I liked Blindness, but agree about it's flaws, and I haven't seen Reservation Road.

Didn't you say you didn't see all of Brick though???

It is a great song, but the song is called THE KIDS AREN'T ALLRIGHT, and the film is THE KIDS ARE ALLRIGHT.

kylemydude
Kyle S 4 years ago

Well he also did Blindness in 2008, and the year before he did Reservation Road and Zodiac. He's going to be in this year's The kids are all right, with Mia Wasikowska and Julianne Moore and Annette Bening as well, which is getting rave reviews and is from the director of High Art and Laurel Canyon. I see what you mean though, he is mainly an independent film actor, but I dig it, he makes better films that way. Yea, Brothers Bloom was fantastic, weren't you the one I was talking to who didn't like Brick? It's from the same director, but personally I think Brick is his masterpiece...

I have seen all the films you mentioned except Date Night yet...

Re: why do I keep watching these?

I suffered through this when I did the Nightmare on Elm St series and Hellraiser series. It was one part commitment and too many parts misplaced hope that I would find a "for me only" guilty pleasure gem amongst the refuse. I sort of did find some legit karats amongst the fool's gold in both cases, but not to the extent that I had the fortitude to then embark on the Halloween series, much less Friday the 13th. Your right Quinto about Kinski and the great director Werner Herzog. Because i asked him what was it like working with Herzog, Kinski told me that they had an explosive relationship both on the set of a film and off the set. He said that tension brought out the artistic best in both of them. He told me some other cool stuff that i have forgotten, i only wish i had a tape recorder on me back then. anyway it was great experience that i shall always cherish.

Dannyrovira
Danny Rovira 4 years ago

Yes my friend i met the late great Klaus Kinski it was on the advance preview of his new film at the time this was 1982, it was an good little thriller called "Venom" it was about a deadly snake a black mamba and some criminal menacing a rich kidnapped boy, it also starred Oliver Reed, Nicol Williamson, Sterling Hayden. Let me tell he was the sweetish person i every met, i talked to him for about half hour before the film began and he had to go to the press room to answer questions from newspaper reporters. I could not believe how down earth he was, just a a great guy. We talked about his career and his many films, and his actress daughter Nasstassia Kinski, he said to me that he was very proud of her as actress but that they had issues that they had to workout as father and daughter. i shall not forget that time i had with one of the 20th century's greatest actors!

Dannyrovira
Danny Rovira 4 years ago

Well Quinto my friend i worked at the Loews State theatre on 45 street and Broadway in Manhattan for three years from 1980-1983, I have a lot of fond memories of those three years. I met a lot of movie stars in my time there, they came for special advance showings of films they were starring in. Here is some of the stars i met: Frank Sinatra, Dudley Moore, William Hurt, Peter Falk, Roy Scheider, Klaus Kinski and Mick Jagger to name a few. That theatre does not exist anymore, it is an office tower now. That too bad it was a wonder theater that had over 1400 seats, It opened up in the year of my birth 1959 and it's inaugural movie was that American classic comedy film "Some Like It Hot" starring: Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. It was a lot of fun my friend!

Sorry it took me like...forever to reply, but (a) I was abroad, (b) It's exams time!, (c) I'm generally "confuzzled" as Max from "Mary & Max" said!

BUT here I am, at last! And I see you changed your photo again! I liked the previous one better to be frank, but they all look good.

I admire how you can enjoy bad films. I've been trying just now to find a BAD movie that I like, and I can't. And not only CAN'T I enjoy them, but I hate them - and they annoy me! Such a waste of time and money. Oh, no, wait. I've given 5 stars to an Uwe Boll, so...yeah...no comments... :)

Funny for a person who is a future "seller" of products not to be materialistic. Can you market something that isn't...tangible? But I share your feelings absolutely. A small house with the basic conveniences. Although, I can cook. Just a few things, but I make them so great that you'd never want to eat them from anywhere else but me! But one thing we differ is that I could move sky and earth in order to be with the man I love. I know so because I can't be with him in reality. And I would never find it tiring to see his face - I would watch him as he sleeps, I'd turn to my side in the movies and see his eyes fixed on the screen, I'd fill his face with kisses and saliva and finger-comb his hair all day long! If only I could. You mean you could be with someone for years and years and never live in the same house with him? That's impossible, you know that, right? Are you with someone right now, or are you claiming personal space early on? What if it was Javier Bardem, huh? Listening to his Spanish accent all day long in your ear??

Barcelona was great - not my favorite city of the ones I've been so far, but great enough. Mind-blowing architecture, quiet even when it's busy, GREAT donuts, artfully-orchestrated city management...all was good. And no one was rude! On the contrary, they were all very nice! And no, I'm afraid I don't know Spanish. (to be continued!)

Hi Quinto i did not read the book, i saw the film and thought that it was well-made and acted as well as directed. Some people and critic's did not care for this film because it was not everything that they read from the book. This film is Peter Jackson's interpretation of book, this is his vision of it, so to hell with all the naysayers! I thought it was brilliant and i am not alone in this, i know many who agree with me. As for Showgirls it was a bad film in so-called critic's terms, but a highly enjoyable one, i like it! i have never seen Heavenly Creatures, i what to so bad Peter Jackson is one of all-time favorite directors. i will try to find it and download it, yes a dear friend of mine also recommend me that movie, but I still can't find a good copy to download, but Quinto, many many thanks also, and as they say in my native language "Masha Danki" (means many thanks)

fernandorafael

Haha, ok ok. No la critico ni nada. Me gusta mucho. Julie Andrews, Dick van Dyke, música, Inglaterra, etc.: genial película.

fernandorafael

fernandorafael

"Then, of course, we have Robin "comedy cancer" Williams. Fuck that bastard".

TOTALMENTE DE ACUERDO, aunque es un gran actor dramático.

Y yo también amé a Mandy Moore en Saved! Me da tristeza cuando la veo en las basuras que tanto acostumbra hacer.

Your review/recommendation of Black Christmas makes me want to watch it after postponing to watch it for a long time.

Alphaville is certainly not an accessible film. It is filmed with a certain surrealistic feeling but it is not for all tastes. If you appreciate good cinema and yet weren't able to fully get nor like the film, not mentioning the fact that you gave the film more than one chance, it is acceptable. Thanks for sending your opinion, though... It is a masterpiece and one of my favorites.

Even so, it is good to know you liked some of Godard's films like Breathless and Band of Outsiders.

Lol... Hilarious! Did you have the special 10th anniversary box-set by chance??

But yeah, I remember the part you are talking about with Julian Sands... Very awkward... At that point I was expecting a lot of strangeness. I had to remind myself early on of the Lynch factor........

I am thinking of going back and re-watching her latest: Surveillance... I feel that I am underrating now having considered a few more things about her style. Bill Pullman is genius too... I think you might like that one... let me know if you ever get around to it.

You know... I felt sort of the same at first... I wasn't bored, but not ultimately impressed yet.. I think what did it for me, was seeing Helena in the box on the table... and the look on her face, i couldnt stop laughing! lol... but much agreed regarding Sherilyn Fenn... she is such a bombshell!!

magnolia12883
Eric Wilkinson 5 years ago

Oh how I LOATHED this way back when...To my astonishment, even Sherilyn Fenn couldn't help this wretched debut from David Lynch's daughter Jennifer... She redeemed herself this year with the release of her 2008 sophomore effort SURVEILLANCE starring Bill Pullman and Julia Ormond (though that felt a lot like the little girl trying to follow in daddy's footsteps)...

HairyLyme

I like your Review on Boxing Helena.... I like that you still give it respects, even though you didn't like it so much..... personally, it sounded like you wanted to rate this movie higher, but you were holding back...! haha...

Sorry, I'm one of the few Boxing Helena advocates out there......

So, what did you think of Jennifer Lynch... did she 'Lynch' your brain, or no?

IfeellikeGregorSamsa

There's no fun in this picture, believe me. It is dreadful and really pissed me off. :-)

jimbotender

haha,i ahve the same feeling for Landis though, granted,Landis has made some stinkers in the late 90's till nowadays..so..it's of great luck that Hughes stopped making movies after Curly Sue yet am curious why was this a failure?will watch it alongside the rest of his..
the problem with many non-English speaking film-makers is availability, even Bergman fans in Canada or U.S. for example have difficulty to grab hold of the most of his 50's work for example...
and of course Greece doesn't have an extra-ordinary amount of virtually underrated film-makers,i mean..Greece doesn't even know who Berri or Hughes are,but that goes in music too like Madeleine Peiroux or Pantera or..or..or..haha.i'll just keep going till i become a critic or a publisher, and then..ahaaaa..all the authorities shall feel my wrath :P

jimbotender

hey thanks!!!he also wrote a very guilty pleasure of mine,Home Alone :)
it's just that..you know...when Claude Berri died,a really famous actor-director,none really cared about him and his bodywork is much more than Hughes...while i respect Hughes in a great scale as i told u..i just wanted for more people to show sympathy towards Berri in early 2009 :(
p.s.: well,i think creating 2 lists for them is my cool homage,i've also enjoyed Uncle Buck, why so many people detest that film? :P

Thanks for the compliment. I try to recommend films pretty often but have been told I recommend far too many at a time in the past so a combination of not a lot of time on computers of late and self-consciousness about that have made me hold back recently...

As much as I like Kevin James I didnt really care this. It seemed to be in the worst possible taste and it was directed by Dennis Dugan, who was a halfway decent character actor, but one of the worst hack directors in Hollywood. Please, Kevin, dont hitch(no pun intended) your wagon to Adam Sandlers! You are one of the most likeable actors around, dont ruin it by making movies with a guy who still thinks kicking guys in the crotch is funny.

I do *slightly* prefer Evil Dead 2, just because of all the crazy camera tricks and especially the sequence where Ash goes flying and drops head first into the water. That is strange! On all the television commercials here it's getting very positive reviews, calling is the first 'feel-good film of the year.' But yeah, I really wouldn't give it an A-. And to put it bluntly, Urban Outfitters is trendy. That's why it's so popular here. And I do like their clothes quite a bit (of course, their prices are outrageous). But last night I was out shopping with a few friends, and one of my friends told me something that disturbed me. She said that the owner of U.O. is very, very anti-gay, and the whole company is as well, as a matter of fact. And they also use sweat shops, which I had no idea of. So I really don't know how I feel about that, and if I want to spend my money there any more. So now I guess I'll be an American Apparel boy all the way now (another store that I'm slightly obsessed with) since they are very pro-gay. (:

I cannot wait to rent it. (:
And guess what! Repo! The Genetic Opera comes out on DVD here on Tuesday.
I've been waiting ages for it.

Oh, well thank you very much. I feel so studious when I wear them. (: Oh yes, and I bought them a while ago at a store called Urban Outfitters. (But I might be boycotting that store in a bit, judging from a bit of information I was given about them last night.)
Hah! And your grandpa glasses sound amazing. Are they as big as Martin Scorsese's? :]

Well, they're both at the top of my list right now. I've watched the trailers for both over and over and over.

Did you ever get to see Brideshead Revisited? I ordered it and it came in the mail yesterday. I'm really excited to watch it. Savage Grace, too. At some point.

Wow. Grey Gardens se ve muy interesante. Donde la viste?

Ayy maldito!

Sure I saw "The Visitor", And of course I loved it. :-)

It's a real thought-provoking movie. The performances are it's main asset, yes, but it stands as a truly superior movie on it's own. Not the #1 BEST movie of the year, but certainly in my top ten. See it, I think you'll surely agree...

Oh GOD me too. Ross more than anything, actually. And I still end up watching the show every time it's on, or whenever I have a craving for it. (: I don't know if I'm excited for Marley and Me though. I hate dogs THAT much.
It's true! She was amazing as the insane psycho bitch! I just love everything she does.
Movie marathons = one of the best things ever. I actually had one of my own today, with a friend. We finished up Tin Man, parts 2 and 3. (We left off on 1, but then she spent a week and Hawaii so we put it off.) And I loved it. (: You should definitely consider finishing it sometime. Then we watched The Princess and the Goblin, and then ended with The Mist. Kind of random movies/T.V., but it was fun. (:

I agree, about the movie and about Jen. There's just something about her. (:

So I watched The Mist today. There was like a five-minute commercial for it on at DVD I was watching and I remembered how much I had wanted to see it, but just kinda forgot. OMG! Liked it a lot, ... minus the ending a bit. Marcia Gay Harden was fantastic! I love her so much.

And it looks like you had yourself a little Sleepaway Camp marathon there. (:
