This is a really decent popcorn movie. It's a quilt of every disaster movie you've ever seen . . .trapped in building, trapped in airplane, trapped on boat . . . gotta love it. Story was decent and action was fantastic.
It is of course a bit cheesy as we have come to expect from the director of Independance Day. If, like me, you absolutely hated 10,000BC, he redeems himself a bit with this film. I am, however, looking forward to The Road for a dose of emotionally deep and realistic portrayal of the apocalypse.
A pretty brilliant film that shows the world the way children see it; or at least the way adults think children whould see it. The fantasy becomes a cloaked version the child mind working thru the emotional and physical conflicts of "reality." And before you think this is too deep for the original book, you need to look closer at why the book has been so timeless. Sendak was heavily involved with Eggers and Jonze in this adaptation and I think it is brilliant, deep, and rich.
A silly, shallow, mildly entertaining film. I tried to tie it back to my dim memories of having loved the Sid and Marty Kroft show as a child. But. . . this is "modern" comedic version . . . and by modern I mean chaka grabs boobs and that's about the height of the comedy you'll see here. On the other hand . .. boobs.
Really decent popcorn action movie. And yes, the "acting" bits were overblown silliness, but unlike the first film, it's like the filmmaker understood that the dialog is not what we care about, and hence the moments between action have a devil-may-care idiocy about them that was mildly charming.
The action was outstanding, and the animation extremely well done.
One request: can we stop having little dogs humping stuff?! Please?!
As much as I wanted to like this movie i simply couldn't. The tone wavered too uncertainly between comedy and drama, the principals were not compelling singers, the songs were very loosely connected, and the choreography was lame. Only one song had any emotional resonance; the rest of the film was fairly boring and even torturous.
