    Source Code (2011)

Fresh approach to time travel gives this thriller not only plenty of excitement but also some tasty intrigue. The wacky science involved actually makes some sense: the brain lives for 8 minutes beyond death, so a radical program (the titular "source code") injects the mind of an army helicopter pilot into the body of a passenger on a train that exploded en route to Chicago. His mission is to find the bomber, but he only has those 8 minutes available to spend per trip. What elevates the movie is that the pilot, in a great turn by Jake Gyllenhaal, cannot remember how he got involved in this program, so while trying to catch the bomber in the virtual world he also attempts to find those answers which his superiors are unwilling to give him. Even though the run time is crisp at just over 90 minutes, it unnecessarily extends the story with an unsatisfying, not to mention impossible, resolution. Even so, this pulse-pounding ride on the rails makes a quality followup to Moon for director Duncan Jones.
