Probably the most respected filmmaker working in the world right now (5 Palme D'Or nominations, ringing endorsements from Godard and Scorsese calling him the greatest living filmmaker) is Abbas Kiarostami, from Iran. Believe me Iranian cinema has a long, storied history.

Bio:
First & foremost: If you're not interested in movies & are not here for sharing your views on movies, please don't bother to send me a friend request. [FYI, while I don't mind occasional (read: once in a blue moon) chats, I'm not a chatty chap in general. So if you're here looking for someone to chat with, spare me.] As you can see, almost all the friends on my friend list here are the ones that are highly interested in movies. [Edited the above on 11/17/2011 & eliminated most of the ramblings for reasons best left to myself. Hope that won't be a problem. Thanks a lot (for understanding, that need not be mentioned). ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A Bit About MY Movie Preferences: In general, I prefer the following genre movies: Suspense/Mystery, Supernatural, Thriller, Horror, Crime, Film-Noir, & I've a soft corner for movies based on real events... ...and avoid the movies falling under the genre: Romance, Animation, Art, Musicals, Sports... ... and these are the ones I can sit through, but don't specifically like or dislike: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Sci-fi, Drama (!!!), etc. Of course, at times, there are exceptions to the above specifications. Artistic, poetic, metaphorical/symbolism, cinematographically great kind of movies, which have almost non-existent plot or storyline (that doesn't matter though when it comes to comedies & certain other genres), generally don't fall under my area of interest. I prefer movies that are quite balanced: When not an out & out comedy, they shouldn't be a total no-brainer, & no matter what genre they fall under, they shouldn't leave almost every other thing for the audience to figure out. I go for movies primarily for entertainment, I don't need 'em for 'food for thought' & all that stuff; my life has enough circumstances of its own already to provide for them. Usually, I also hate movies that are full of clichés & plot-holes. However, if they're incorporated appropriately in the movie, I don't mind them much. To make it more clear, IMO, a good movie is not the one that has no cliché or plot-hole; but it's the one that absorbs you in it & makes you overlook all the clichés & plot-holes. A film is successful when it manages to intrigue you. If this job is done efficiently, all possible loopholes in the film start looking insignificant. Last but not the least, I'd also like to specify that my ratings will be biased since they'll be based entirely on my *personal* opinion about the movie. My ratings may not be quite consistent because my mood also plays an influential role in it. And I happen to have infrequent mood-swings. What I find "entertaining" this moment may very well turn into "annoyingly cheesy" later, and vice-versa, depending on my mood. If you're looking for a professional review, I'm sorry to disappoint. For a proper review, you can check out one of my friends' profiles or sites like imdb.com, ShowBizCafe.com, rottentomatoes.com, etc. I'm here to rate the movies primarily. And if I feel the (irresistible) urge to blah a bit, I leave a small note regarding the movie alongside, which again, may or may not make sense. **Seems like my above offer wasn't enough. So here's something more w.e.f. 12th September, 2011: In the past, I sometimes included the summary of the movie in my comment. With the passage of time, I've grown to realize that as much as it's a pain for me to write it, it's even more torturous for some users/readers to even come across it. I understand the significance of time and I'm somewhat sure that you too would agree that it won't be advisable to waste anyone's. So, acting in the spirit of goodwill as I generally do, I won't give the outline of the plot anymore. (Obviously, my incompetence and laziness also have their generous share of contribution therein.) You can always find it in the movie description here or IMDb, etc. So, leaving the holy task for the professionals, all I'd do here from now on is rating, and ranting if required. Sorry for the delay and whatever you've had to go through (if applicable) because of my injurious (which I mistook as ingenious thus far) skills, but better late than never, right? I know words can't compensate for it, but I have no option here as far as I know. My utmost sincere condolences to all the victims. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Salma Hayek is given a role that suits her (age-wise & acting-wise), but the lead actress was terrible. The two lead actors were about okay. The ending was nonsensical, although like many did, I didn't find the rest of the movie that incredible. A mediocre presentation by O.

The gore doesn't give me the kicks, and I don't like pretensive scary stuff. This was like some B, if not C grade thriller. I watched it with one finger on fast-forward button. It's a bi too much of a drag. I went for it because I didn't have much time, and wanted to see something around 90 minutes. When I saw this one, I went for it since it seemed to match my genre. But it was way too longer than I can sit through. Go for it though, it may be your cup of tea/coffee/whatever. 0/5 for all the suffering it offered.

Same old detective story where almost every main character is presented as a suspect, and the one that seems the most innocent turns out to be the one responsible for murders. Following the strategy of (most) suspense/thriller film plots in last century, it's quite outdated now.

A mediocre time-pass gangster flick with a love story popped in. Performances are as good as the movie. If you're looking specifically for twists & turns, better skip this one.

A cop flick that was neither boring nor interesting. The friendship of the protagonists hardly had anything new. The end is apparently (and most probably, intentionally) predictable due to its title.
