I am so happy that this mans story is being told. Benedict Cumberbatch is great but his performance reminds me of his Sherlock Holmes. I loved Keira Knightley in it and Tywin Lannister as a WWII RAF officer is pretty great. I have to say the storytelling is very by-the-numbers and the movie loses it's nerve at the end. I know they wanted it to end on a more upbeat note but it fails to show the true insidiousness of homophobia.
I had ridiculously high expectations going into this movie so I was prepared to be at least a little disappointed. IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT IN THE LEAST! It's tore me in half and uplifted me at the same time. This is hands down the best picture of the year. If the Academy Awards don't recognize this then it will be proof positive that those award ceremonies are just popularity contests with an excuse to see rich people in fancy clothes; with not even a tertiary relationship to rewarding cinematic achievement, because this is it.
I especially recommend this movie to religious people. This is a Hollywood movie but it does NOT shy away from MLK's relationship with God AT ALL. There is something so transcendent about the scenes where Martin Luther King draws strength from the Holy Spirit and calls on Him for help. Forget any of the controversy you have heard or read and see this movie! I hope this movie will rouse people to positive action in their lives. I cannot praise this movie enough.
