  • The Raid 2

    The Raid 2 (2014)

    March 29, 2014

No one is going to mistake the beefed up undercover plot for Infernal Affairs or anything but it meant I could be invested in the action instead of simply admiring it. Not to mention that the greatly expanded canvas allows for more varied and spectacular sequences, the tremendous car chase being a favourite.

  • The World's End

    The World's End (2013)

    March 26, 2014

The first third (half?) of this is the most dramatically satisfying thing Wright/Penn/Frost have done yet but the invasion/apocalypse framework doesn't seem to be as fertile ground for meta-laughs as zombies/action films.

  • Stoker

    Stoker (2013)

    March 26, 2014

Lush direction and three fine performances can't save a half-baked story.

  • Ain't Them Bodies Saints

    Ain't Them Bodies Saints (2013)

    March 26, 2014

More than a little reminiscent of a certain director's early works but its lyrical pace and mood captivate, even if the story occasionally falters.

  • Blue Jasmine

    Blue Jasmine (2013)

    March 05, 2014

I reckon this is Woody's best work since Crimes and Misdemeanors.

  • Get the Gringo

    Get the Gringo (2012)

    March 05, 2014

Don't no why this one slipped through the cracks because this 'Payback in Mexico' tale is a brisk and entertaining reminder of why ol' Mad Mel is a movie star in the first place.

  • Escape Plan

    Escape Plan (2013)

    March 05, 2014

Cheesy, clumsy and utterly ridiculous but I have enough affection for these two lunks (Arnie is in particularly fine form) that I still rather enjoyed myself.

  • American Hustle

    American Hustle (2013)

    March 05, 2014

As flabby as Bale's midriff at times but since that's in the service of Hustle's adorably fucked up cast of losers and their fractious relationships, I'm OK with it.

  • 12 Years a Slave

    12 Years a Slave (2013)

    March 05, 2014

God, I feel like an arsehole but despite the top drawer acting/directing/everything, and total commitment to the horror, I was largely unmoved.

  • The Wolf of Wall Street

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

    March 05, 2014

There's not really enough story here for 3 hours but more than enough manic energy from both the director and star.
