It can be super disturbing to most, but when you compared to the real-life events of the Bosnian & Serb conflict, it's nothing. Truly a misunderstood film that will largely be discounted by most as "fucked up." these same people will probably turn around and watch trash like Hostel and Saw 2-1483929
Meat and potatoes America meets toned down memoir. The acting isn't particularly well done. Sometimes I feel like I'm watching a call and answer scene from a soap opera. It struggles so much to maintain an agnostic view of war, that you almost lose sight of the actual inner conflict of a man sent to war. Does this touch on his inner conflict? Somewhat. Does this touch on a soldier's need to dehumanize the enemy? Only through the supporting characters, like the pipsqueak marine spotter. It would have received a higher rating had it been more realistic (read: dark) and true to the subject of the memoir. I don't think that this will stay at a 2.5-3 start rating. In fact, I think history will change the way the movie is viewed. I'll be viewing this again and updating the review if needed. Overall, I was not impressed by the acting, writing, or cinematography.
I got it...but I didn't need to. The mood, the setting, the music, the story...good. The characters leave you wanting more, but not in a good way. More in that you don't really feel like you get to know them. It was okay, but I wouldn't go to the theater for this adaptation.
