Is it just me, or is this a horribly perverted name for children?s book character?
Anyway, if you are lucky enough to not have seen the remake of this movie, don?t bother. It is total crap. It is definitely one of those movies that did not need to be remade.
I like Johnny Depp, but he was horrible in this role. But of course, Gene Wilder is Willy Wonka. There was no way Depp could fill those shoes for me.
Why is Burton doing remakes? Did he not learn from Planet of the Apes? I could understand taking a bad movie with a good concept, and trying to remake it better. But why remake classics? They are classics for a reason. It is sad to see such a talented man sell out.
Riding the success of Million Dollar Baby, screenwriter Paul Haggis has used his new found leverage to make his directorial debut with Crash.
It is unfair to say that Crash is a movie about racism, because that would only be confronting the crust of the film. Crash takes racism, takes our social stereotypes, sets them up against the backdrop of the culturally diverse City of Los Angeles, and asks the viewer if these things affect their judgment, beliefs and actions. Racism in this movie is just a tool to show how our stereotypes influence how we react to other people, even of our own race.
Crash has an excellent cast that includes Sandra Bullock, Don Cheadle, Brendon Fraser, and Terrence Howard. All of them did an excellent job; however, the real stand out performance in this film was by Matt Dillon. He is simply amazing in his role, and a Best Supporting Actor nomination would be well deserved.
Not everyone will come away liking this film. The context of the story is not easy to digest, the language used may even offend some, but everyone I have come across has been moved by the story. Simply and amazing film.
*Side note* I plan to update my journal more often now.
*Side note #2* LOST season 2 starts tonight, watch it.
*Side note #3* The instructor for my college newspaper is trying to convince me to take the Copy/Editor job. It would be something that would look good on a resume, but would take me away from writing articles. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet.
Oh how I love Netflix. I figured it would be a good time to say a little something about the movies I have rented from Netflix in the last month and 1/2.
Audition (1999) 10/10 One of the most disturbing films I have ever seen. The last 20 minutes of this was almost painful to watch but I still could not take my eyes off of what was happening on screen.
Yojimbo (1961) 8/10 I actually prefer the remake made by Leone, A Fistful of Dollars. Still, both films are great.
Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979) 6/10 Had its moments, but nowhere near the brilliance that was Holy Grail.
Once Upon A Time in the West (1968) 10/10 One of the best westerns of all time.
I Heart Huckabees (2004) 1/10 I still don't understand what the movie was about.
The Seventh Seal (1957) 5/10 Some interesting philosophical ideas where thrown around but overall I really did not care for the characters nor their struggles.
Closer (2004) 6/10 Excellent dialogue and overall well written. But sometimes you want to grab a character and slap them around for behaving the way they do.
After the Sunset (2004) 7/10 My obsession with Salma Hayek continues. A fun movie that was better than expected.
Napoleon Dynamite (2004) 6/10 STUPID STUPID STUPID. But one of the few movies of 2004 that actually made me laugh.
Sideways (2004) 7/10 I found the first half to be extremely boring but the final 40 minutes were excellent. Paul Giamatti was impressive in his role.
The Flight of the Phoenix (2004) 6/10 A better than expected action flick.
Ocean's Twelve (2004) 3/10 A huge waste of my time.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) 4/10 I tried to give it another chance but I still did not like it. The only good part about it was the HAL segment.
Event Horizon (1997) 7/10 This film always creeps me out.
House of Flying Daggers (2004) 5/10 Too much love story not enough about the Flying Daggers.
Meet the Fookers (2004) 5/10 I wish it was funny.
Suicide Club (2002) 5/10 A solid first half then it becomes total garbage.
