    Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

There are so many problems with Silver Linings Playbook that it astounds me that it's being recognized as one of the best films of the year. I found the experience to be grating.

The characters are caricatures, reduced to quirks and yelling matches. There are two characters that should have been completely removed from the film. One of the characters is a parole officer who is conveniently at the right place and time when Pat (Bradley Cooper) does something wrong. The other is Pat's brother, who is pompous and gloats as much as Will Ferrell's brother in Step Brothers (except in this film, we are supposed to take him seriously).

The portrayal of bipolar disorder is over-the-top and cranked to 11 in almost every scene. Do we really need to see these manic episodes so often? I didn't buy it.
