I'm surprised the Tomato meter on this is so low; I just finished watching it and I thought it was a lot of fun. There were some times when I wished the characters would do more with their magic, but really this movie worked on just about every level with me. I'm giving it an 80%.
So I just watched this a couple of hours ago and I'm looking for reviews of it and I was surprised by the critics reviews saying it was true to Lewis Carroll's original work. In only the barest element of the plot does this resemble anything Lewis Carroll wrote. The rest of the movie is a bizarre surrealist vision of a world of animate inanimate objects, ranging from simple moving playing cards to the immensely creepy White Rabbit, who, in this version, is a dead, stuffed rabbit come to life, constantly leaking sawdust through a hole in its stomach. This is a version of the story that Carroll would have told Alice Lidell if his intention had been to give her nightmares. If you're looking for a surrealist, horror movie take on Alice, this is the movie for you, but it had too many touches for me that were counter to the tone of the book that I just couldn't enjoy it.
