Snow White and the Huntsman

Snow White and the Huntsman

(2012)
9 months ago via Rotten Tomatoes

Snow White and the Huntsman is what you'd get if you gave Ed Wood an absurd budget and no script. I just saw this film at a discount theater, and even after paying only $2.50 I still feel cheated. Honestly, one of the most inept, dramatically inert films I've ever seen. Blame probably lies with several culprits, but clearly the screenplay is the bad guy here. I imagine it totals about 20 pages of actual dialogue, and leaves character development/motivation up to the audience's imagination. There was no narrative propulsion, events occur and periods of time pass with zero purpose other than to mechanically advance the plot, such as it is. Charilze Theron, for all her histrionics, has little to say so her character repeats herself continuously. The expository scenes are as clunky as atomic era sci-fi. The dwarves feel tacked on and add little apart from a connection to the more well-known Disney version. The battle scenes are just dumb.
Aside from some slick production design, this is a big zero. With a budget in the neighborhood of $170 mil, this film is a borderline war crime. Sadly, it fits in well with Universal's recent stream of junk. It would work especially well as a book end with Cowboys & Aliens, another ill-conceived misfire that literally made no sense.
