Battle: Los Angeles

Battle: Los Angeles

Let's get one thing straight. NO effort was put into this movie. There is not a single solitary frame that this movie can claim as its own. It's basically taking every movie cliche ever made and throwing them into a blender. The editing is absolutely atrocious, and there is not one character that you'll care about. The movie starts out with aliens invading, and then for no explicable reason it cuts back to 20 minutes of exposition that it rushes through, giving little to no reason to care about any of characters that the movie is introducing. At that point suspense is completely gone. The aliens invade, the troops are introduced, they are told their objective, and they then land on the ground all in the span of about 30 minutes.

The movie moves too damn fast. You have no time to catch your breath before the movie throws another seemingly pointless explosion or fog-filled fight scene your way. There is absolutely no surprise when the aliens land either. No one cares, and even when they fight them in combat, they still don't seem very surprised. The plot just wades around in mediocrity for two hours. Civilians die, you don't care, marines die, you still don't care, the "mothership" blows up, and even then you don't care (aside from the fact that you know the movie is going to be over soon). The movie borrows heavily, and I mean HEAVILY from Independence Day. And I have one question, why would anyone want to do that? Especially considering that this is a dumbed down version of what was already a dumb sci-fi movie, that isn't good.

I will give this movie one thing though, they made the invasion of Earth seem incredibly boring. The aliens are just about the dullest abominations to ever come out of Hollywood. You never learn anything about them, you never hear them talk, you only know that they're here for water, and the characters, as said previously, don't seem the least bit surprised about the enemy they're fighting. Their thoughts on the aliens probably mirroring our own. And it seems with all their vastly superior alien technology they still use the same weapons that the marines in the movie do.

There is no story either. It's just, marines go here, now go there, explosions, fight scene, civilian dies, boom. Shoot, we're in a corner, what do we do? We're marines damn it! We fight till the end. The whole movie feels like a Marine recruitment video.

The music is especially gruesome, nothing but your typical Independence Day, patriotic orchestral BS throughout the whole picture.

There are so many scenes that have been done to death and scenes that are so derivative, that it's almost hilarious that we're supposed to take it seriously. Needless to say, me and my friends were cracking jokes through the entire movie, and what was funnier was that the people around us were laughing along with us. The ending line is especially painful.* I can't think of a single scene that hasn't been done better and more competently in another movie.

I'll keep it simple, DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE. It's atrociously edited and written, painfully derivative, the acting is incredibly lackluster, and the shaky cam combined with the steady cam cinematography will leave you with a headache and a seething hatred that you spent 9 dollars on this tripe.

*"We've already had breakfast".... we've already had breakfast? What the hell does that mean? You're telling me they spent over 15 hours on the ground. No sleep, no food, no water, no backup, and you're telling me they are ready and willing to go back out there? BS!!
