Grrrrr - there are no spoilers in this review.
The first 90% of this film is cutting edge. The first 10 minutes are some of the best film making you will see. But did someone reach the end of the budget and stick a poor excuse for a script in? Did simple common sense go out the window?
It all goes downhill starting at the beach scene. Do yourself a favour and shut off the film at that point and make up your own, realistic ending. One where cars that get in head on collisions at high speed have front end damage, not spotless with working headlights.
Great camera work and for that reason alone, is worth watching - but it's as predictable as it gets, combined with a horrible script. Most of this stuff just wouldn't happen. The script for Tommy and his father make you want to vomit - and then Nolte milks a bad script into lame land. But it's still a good bit of fun - kind of like Rocky on Steroids. Can't believe no one yelled Adrian at the end.
A good spin on the predictable Hollywood romance. It works (very well). Worth seeing for Corey Stoll's performance as Ernest - brilliant. We need more films that aren't the same as all the rest, although the boundaries are just being explored here. Well worth it. Be better Hollywood.
