Cloverfield (2008)

Although it lacks genuine heart thumping scares which is a shame, Cloverfield works in every other way. From the simple build up to the terrifying first attack on Manhattan from the giant monster, from this moment the movie turns very dark, explosive and creepy. I love big monster movies and the first appearance of the creature was amazing as it reared it's ugly head over the subway tunnel. This is a hugely satisfying found footage horror, for once I could see the action and follow the characters because of the amazing camera shots, especially the shot of the main protagonists in the street as tanks and rocket launchers roared above as they ran into the subway. The hype was a bit over the top, it's not terrifying and amazing, but it is creepy and really good fun. Final Score: 88%
