Movie Ratings and Reviews

Petals on the Wind
½

The screenplay writer/creators of this movie did not read and understand V.C. Andrews' novel thoroughly, and therefore failed to capture the soul of the book that must have made its many readers and fans smile, cry and fell in love with the Dollanganger kids. Disappointed that they killed the character of Dr. Sheffield here, what's an additional fifteen minutes to tell the story of his character if it made this movie a delicious one to match the contrasting blend of beauty and pain that the novel served?

Something to while away time.

Metro Manila
Metro Manila (2014)

A heartbreaking film noir that can compete with any internationally acclaimed crime-thrillers. I am glad I noticed this movie. The actors are all good too!

Odd Thomas
Odd Thomas (2014)

Fast-paced and engaging, with a sad, beautiful ending.

The Book Thief

Tender and steals the heart.

All Is Lost
All Is Lost (2013)

Never to disappoint, gripping and thrilling.

Gravity
Gravity (2013)

Stunning, thrilling and engaging from start to finish.

About Time
About Time (2013)

For me this movie is amazing as it is poignant and sincere, never mind the plot holes that can be easily dismissed; its gentleness makes up for its minor flaws. Thanks to the maker of Nottinghill, Love Actually, and Four Weddings and a Funeral for creating another memorable movie.

Eraser
Eraser (1996)

Vanessa Williams: very young!!!

The Spectacular Now

I love this quote from Sutter Keely: It's fine to live in the now. But the best thing about now is that there's another one tomorrow. I'm going to start making them count. Great movie. If you loved 500 Days of Summer you are going to love this one ten times more.

The Kid with a Bike

Yes, gut-wrenching, a drama that tugs at the heartstrings, nobody in his right mind could say anything bad about this French film. I am glad I watched this with the kids, maybe this movie made them grateful they are being loved and taken care of both their parents, no matter what.

Pretty Woman
Pretty Woman (1990)

Still very lovable the Nth time around!!! Julia Roberts is stunning in both her looks and her performance.

Wonderful World

I don't really mind the lack of originality, I still find this movie smart and spiritually uplifting.

The Grey
The Grey (2012)

It is impossible not to rate this movie anything below five stars. My heart leaped and hurt and cried all throughout watching this.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Can't wait to see the conclusion, hate that it is still far far ahead in 2014 (November). This movie is just perfect! Something that I will not get tired of watching multiple times.

Super
Super (2011)

Entertaining but pointless if somebody's already created a movie like Kick-ass.

The Call
The Call (2013)
½

A good movie, only you have to reimagine its ending.

Wrath of the Titans
½

Zeus and Hades (Neeson and Fiennes) they have striking resemblance, and anyway, they are brothers in the story, so, they must have needed that... and that's all I can say about this movie!

True Grit
True Grit (2010)

Made me curious about the book, and the first version that starred John Wayne. A perfect Western Action-Adventure movie.

The Conjuring

A landmark in horror cinema, a landmark in my experience watching horror movies.

The Chorus (Les Choristes)
½

Nice, even Azriela enjoyed watching this.

Curse of Chucky

Very glad he is back with a promise of a few more sequels! Iiiii just love this GOOD GUY!!!

Django Unchained

Kick-ass and wildly violent, I just won't let my kids watch this!!! But wait... they just did!

The Croods
The Croods (2013)

"If we don't evolve we'll be history," I just love this lesson learned from this very funny and heartfelt family adventure animated film.

What Maisie Knew

Onata Aprile is a very talented child actress, her acting is so affecting that I got my heart broken a thousand times throughout the movie. Unbearable but necessary to watch these people's turmoil in the story because they are so real and one would just want to find a happy ending after all the series of heartbreaks.

Triangle
Triangle (2009)

Baffling but hugely entertaining.

The Kings of Summer

The "Stand By Me" movie of this generation, a must see for adolescents and adults alike. It is always bittersweet to remember the Huck Finns and Tom Sawyers that we once had been, and this movie is just the good time machine to ride.

Bad Education (La Mala educación)

Another perfectly directed, beautifully written and wonderfully acted film that can only come from Pedro Almodóvar, Fele Martinez and GAEL GARCIA BERNAL. Tragic, as real life is always, but beautiful.

Ditto
Ditto (2000)

World War Z
World War Z (2013)

Exciting and thrilling from beginning to end, my latest favorite Z-movie! Fast moving zombies are just sooo smart an idea!

What Dreams May Come

A heartbreaking movie experience that I almost forgot my own real heartaches. Visually stunning, must be seen in HD to be enjoyed threefolds. Very beautiful!

Head in the Clouds
½

All the beautiful and the daring are here. Why wouldn't I love this movie?

Kites
Kites (2010)

Five-star gorgeous, sexy and very romantic.

Four Sisters And A Wedding

They could have just titled this 3 Sisters and A Wedding and saved perhaps 20% on talent fee, or made one of the sisters' character a lesbian to make one of the actresses work harder for a role that the production paid her for. Well, I saw that my mom enjoyed it, I should say it is not bad at all.

Restless
Restless (2011)

Cute and somewhat poignant.

All the Boys Love Mandy Lane
½

Some slasher films are merely this... crap!!!

Some Guy Who Kills People

An okay thriller. Uhmmm... okay...

House at the End of the Street
½

Very very.......... unscary... bleh!!!

Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You
½

The book, as always the case in many adaptations, is way way better. It does not matter that the other critics did not read, or might even have no clue that there is a book written, the movie is still bad even without its counterpart literature to compare to.

Starship Troopers

Casper Van Dien and Denise Richards are a pleasant couple to watch. I still love this old time favorite, and loved it more having my son Dayle watched and enjoyed it with me last night.

Accidents Happen
½

Liked the 80s feel that this movie gave, and it is dark, funny and poignant enough to be likeable .

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

I had almost missed writing a review on this. Makes me interested in getting a copy of the book. This movie looks like a book that Peter Cameron (The Weekend, Someday This Pain Will Be Useful To You) would have also written but Stephen Chbosky just beat him into doing it first. I need to buy the book, I need to!!!

Like Stars on Earth

Thanks Majo https://www.facebook.com/majo.torres.3150?fref=ts for recommending this movie. Considering its primary theme, dyslexia, it couldn't have had much appeal to many, but it is not just about that. It is about many other things too, that are important in our lives: family, friends, dreams and education, and so on and so forth. This is a great movie, quite long to watch, but never dull and sure to engage.

Miss Congeniality
½

Sandra Bullock is charming. Still enjoyed it the second time around.

Les Misérables

Deeply moving, memorable and haunting. Javert as always is annoying, Russell Crowe played his character well. The character of Eponine especially entranced me, and her song On My Own, didn't know she would be the one singing that here. Anne Hathaway is most admirable, she sings very well, her voice is angelic. I regret that I am very late on this one.

Practical Magic
½

Not as good as I remember it.

The Eclipse
The Eclipse (2010)
½

Its spine-tinglingly scare is not necessarily everywhere in the movie, but it is a good horror movie, and is fun watching mostly in the wee hours of the night.

An Education
An Education (2009)
½

Good timing to have sat down on this with my kids watching too, there are some life's lessons we want to teach the young and we just need such a movie to save us time and allow us the pleasure of smiling inwardly saying, "That's what I have been saying will happen when you don't listen to your folks!"

Goon
Goon (2012)

Enjoyable movie; it kicks, it punches, it bruises... but most of all it tugs at the heartstrings!

A Haunted House

Capital T H R A S H... F*#@ I literally threw away the dvd out of rage, what a waste of my precious time!

Man of Steel
Man of Steel (2013)

The best Superman film ever!!! Nobody should watch this in a small screen, moreso on a pirated dvd as they might be disregarding an experience that is worth living this life for.

Beautiful Creatures
½

Hope I haven't had high expectations.

6 Souls
6 Souls (2013)

Titled Shelter in other countries, the theme of this movie is interesting, I would say it is a little scary. Not as bad as other critics claimed.

Warm Bodies
Warm Bodies (2013)

We thought everyone's already exhausted the ideas in this tired genre, and once in a while something as 'fresh' like this surprises us.

Wreck-it Ralph

Exciting as much as it is nostalgic an experience watching this clever film.

Blue Valentine

Watching this provocative drama about marriage I couldn't help but remember my own parents. The theme is not rare, but the experience of being moved as much is. Beautiful and sad, and very engaging.

Echoes of the Rainbow (Sui yuet san tau)
½

Beautifully sad, another memorable movie, a rare gem.

Mama
Mama (2013)
½

Super scaryyyyy!!!

Abduction
Abduction (2011)

Reviewed only 4% fresh by critics of RT? But it is watchable and entertaining enough for me.

Moonlight Mile
½

Nice, honest and emotional movie.

Aftershocks (Tangshan dadizhen)
½

I thought watching Naomi Watts' The Impossible prepared me for any other heart-breaking movie, but this one's a tearjerker all throughout! Also, the special effects in the beginning is something China can brag about!

King Kong
King Kong (2005)
½

I love Naomi Watts and her pearly buck teeth, and her hollow eyes, so sad and so beautiful. Great movie to watch on a long weekend!

The Impossible
½

Possibly the most engaging thriller in my book, after Titanic.

Iron Man 3
Iron Man 3 (2013)

The best of the three, a memorable movie.

Martha Marcy May Marlene

A movie with a story that stays in the memory and chills.

Breathless
Breathless (2012)

Gore and fun become synonymous in this thrilling dramedy. I love it!

The Greatest
The Greatest (2010)
½

Never have I shed more tears watching a movie. Also I have never seen Pierce Brosnan acted this well, I have just become a fan. Beautiful movie, a good one to see with family, lovers and friends.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2

I lied when I said Twilight sucks. The truth is I love it from storyline to soundtrack, from Part 1 to the last. Beautiful.

Sinister
Sinister (2012)
½

One to match Insidious' evil and horror. A friendly advice: spend some time in the bathroom before seeing this one, or you might just shit your pants!

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2 - Freddy's Revenge

What I used to remember as frightening turned out to be fun and, uhh queer. I know I remember liking all of them... but I am a fan, what can you do?!

Frankenweenie
½

I was hoping for more than just black and white.

Jack Goes Boating

The friendships in the movie are heartrending. To watch this is an emotional ride, a shift back and forth between the sadness of witnessing a breaking relationship of one couple and a budding romance of another.

Lawless
Lawless (2012)
½

Definitely thrilling and watchable gangster movie.

Life of Pi
Life of Pi (2012)

Once in every century something most astonishing to both the eyes and the emotion graces the silver screen, this generation is lucky to have this great one right now.

Dear Mr. Gacy
½

A breathtaking and disturbing suspenseful drama. I wonder why film critics took no notice of such a good film.

The Clinic
The Clinic (2010)
½

Good enough for those who already miss Andy Whitfield, but they'll just miss him some more as he is only 20% present in the movie!

How to Eat Fried Worms

Cute little 'for adults also' movie. A must see for parents with their kids.

The Reaping
The Reaping (2007)

Watchable enough, but only because of Hilary Swank.

Three Idiots
Three Idiots (2009)

If you thought the movie Nanban is very good, you should see this one too, also based on the novel Five Point Someone - What not to do at IIT! by Chetan Bhagat. The actors here are pretty much more likeable than the ones in Nanban.

Robot & Frank
½

'"Robot & Frank" is not a bad film, and yet, it's incredibly easy to start forgetting it even as it's playing. It's so light and airy that there's not really anything to grasp within it.' - Jeff Beck said, a Richmond Movie Examiner, AND I am saying just the opposite of this! Robot & Frank is a clever film with a lot of hilarious moments and thanks to its very funny actors, Frank Langella and uhm, well... the robot with the voice of Peter Sarsgaard. I will remember this movie till I get old and become senile.

The Woman in Black
½

Great to see Daniel Radcliffe in a spine-tingling gothic horror film. Worth watching for Radcliffe fans, even for mere fans of horror movies.

Clash of the Titans

Enjoyable movie!!! Now I gotta see again the old one. I remember having fun watching the 1980s version when I was a kid.

Les Miserables

The best! A not so old movie that will still appeal to young audiences, like my kids Danrey and Azriela, they enjoyed watching this with me. Made me shed little tears all throughout, Liam Neeson and Uma Thurman are very good, nobody else could have portrayed the characters of Valjean and Fantine any better... I still got to see Jackman's and Hathaway though.

Jane Eyre
Jane Eyre (2011)

I pay attention to Mia Wasikowska here in this film more than I did in Alice In Wonderland. This will definitely send a new generation audience to the classic novel by Charlotte Bronte and realize there are indeed very beautiful love stories written in the old days.

Ruby Sparks
Ruby Sparks (2012)

Interesting story, and a bit likeable, maybe because a pretty girl like Zoe Kazan played the character of Ruby Sparks.

Chernobyl Diaries

Despite bad criticisms, I somehow enjoyed this movie. Yes, there are lots of cliche, but the fact that it scared the wits out of me just means it is good, at least, for me!

21 Jump Street

A warm and funny man-flick that a guy would want to watch with his son, or brother, or dad, or another guy, if he is good friends with them. Well, I enjoyed watching this with my kids, and it made me feel I am best friends with them. This movie has that kind of magic.

Ted
Ted (2012)

Riotously funny! Still can't get over my hysteria in the ending where the boy antagonist grew up to be Taylor Lautner! Crazy, offensive and nonsensical, but what the heck, I enjoyed it! (Now these I have here are three exclamation points.)

The Odd Life of Timothy Green

Not enough to inspire and lacks magic like what it promised.

The Man With the Iron Fists

Liu's and Crowe's... and Eli Roth's talent wasted by RZA's poor acting and directing. Some trailers would trick you to believing a movie is good, beware!

ParaNorman
ParaNorman (2012)
½

The kids liked it, I kinda liked it. What's not to like with Paranormal creatures like witches and zombies, and a hero to save his town from a centuries-old curse?

A Cinderella Story
½

The great soundtrack makes up for what the movie lacks. One can at least enjoy songs from Ed McCain, Josh Kelley, Kara DioGuardi, et al, more than they can the almost tiresome story of Cinderella.

Upside Down
Upside Down (2013)

Fantastic eye-candy romance fantasy movie. It is good to find such a unique movie once in a rare while.

Midnight in Paris
½

I'm a sucker for time travel movies, so this one gets a three and a half star from me, not a bad rating, no?! The movie is as mesmerizingly beautiful as Paris!

Just Go with It

I don't care, but Nicole Kidman starred in this movie and she managed to be funny! Cute movie.

Ganito kami noon, paano kayo ngayon
½

Entertaining, funny and amusing. Interesting to see the veteran actors and actresses in their youth in this seventies movie.

Rosario
Rosario (2013)
½

Good cinematography, yes. I am just not sure about its relevance, still it is like a futile business of making a t.v. soap into a big screen movie version.

Ponyo
Ponyo (2009)
½

Very cute. Mesmerizing to both young and old audiences. An atypical mermaid-like tale that can leave one breathless and magically moved in the end.

Back to the Future Part II

You just can't help it, like opening a box of chocolates, once you start you must unwrap and eat another one, this part is as good as the first. Great, great movie!

Whisper of the Heart (Mimi wo sumaseba) (If You Listen Closely)

Magical and realistic, I don't know how this animated movie managed to pitch in both qualities. Moved and enchanted, I can watch this movie over and over again and forget the characters are only drawings.

The Robber
The Robber (2011)

Shiruga kibung sumpat malakalimlin sirin. Garampiling pirat, sibulay sin tirambung kuraway siam sin tirat. Siri para kiram sin tiram tiram pori siray guramramlan. Four star and a half kirin siri sin sibarin.

The atmosphere is kind of tranquil, but the excitement it did me is enormous, especially towards the end. The actor is very good. One foreign film that will sure engage even a person who doesn't like the trouble of reading subtitles. Four and a half star from me.

Back to the Future Part III

I have seen this, and the first two parts, like, what, a hundred of times already? But tonight, we are scheduled to play this on dvd once again and I am still very excited. Highly recommended for people of all ages!

Back to the Future

A movie one can watch for a hundred number of times and be thrilled over and over again. This (and Christopher Reeves' Somewhere In Time) is what introduced me to liking time travel movies, but I still cannot find anything better than this, and its sequels. The Back To The Future trilogy are the most enjoyable movies of all times, and amazingly the kids of this generation still find joy watching them, I know that, my kids stayed up from night to dawn finishing two movies (they must reserve the last part for the next night!).

Dark Shadows
Dark Shadows (2012)
½

A loosening up kind of horror; funny, silly and creepy, all at the same time, and in a good way. I would believe the negative criticisms of other RT reviewers if only they agreed on whichever things are bad or good, but some would say though the cinematography is good but the humor is bad, while others would say there's not much cinematic magic, so, which is which? At least the 38% who reviewed positively are saying the same positive things about the movie. Sometimes RT's critics consensus is not credible.

The Cabin in the Woods

Crazy, current and twisted-scary! There's nothing to throw away here, there's not one dull moment from beginning to ending. A rare one in its genre.

You've Got Mail

Refreshing to once in a while review the list of old movies I haven't seen yet, and find this Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan gem. I love the happy ending that's never corny but full of romantic warmth. This is a movie that makes me say real love is also about kindness.

Water for Elephants

I did not at all look for the chemistry critics are looking for between Witherspoon and Pattinson, as I prize more the former's versatility and charm, and the latter's better acting (as compared to his vampire movie series), and generally the movie being beautifully crafted. It's a must-see even if you are not a fan of circus or a big animal like an elephant.

A Beautiful Mind

A riveting mystery and love story. Maybe the best Russell Crowe movie I have ever seen I am glad I took the time to sit down and watch this beautiful drama that's brilliantly written and directed.

The Apparition

Not worthy of even my half star, but I got to rate it with something, though it is absolute crap! I heard two of my friends spent time and money on this thrash, I pity them!

The Bourne Legacy

The first three movies with Matt Damon in them are better. Though it would not hurt to see this one too. Interesting because there are scenes shot in the Philippines.

Tomboy
Tomboy (2011)
½

Tender and sweet. There are many parts I find tugging at my heartstrings, especially because I have a child of the same age as the girl here. Beautiful French movie.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
½

Just fine. Interesting to see a different vampire movie like this, with an American president in it! . The fight scenes are kind of engaging. Just fine.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days
½

Funny, maybe because I am shallow, but it doesn't matter, these series of Wimpy Kid movies make me smile, and occasionally laugh!

One Day
One Day (2011)
½

Beautiful and old-fashioned. Soulful and sad. Glad to have stayed till the end, all the parts I thought dragging, are in fact meaningful little details a good love story should have.

The Lizzie McGuire Movie

Nicey nicey movie with some good music from Hilary Duff. The kids had fun watching it, at least, maybe because Duff is pretty much likeable.

Philadelphia
Philadelphia (1993)
½

Denzel Washington is admirable in his character here. He should also have been nominated and won best actor. Philadelphia is one of the most thrilling and engaging courtroom drama I have seen.

Reality Bites
½

There's nothing much that I missed when I didn't see it in 1994. Even though, I enjoyed seeing in yet another old film three of my favorites, Hawke, Stiller and Ryder.

Larry Crowne
Larry Crowne (2011)

What can I say, I am a fan of Julia Roberts! Though slow-paced and plain, I had fun and had access to some good insights. A somewhat likeable film, Larry Crowne!

The Amazing Spider-Man

I am a fan of the first three, and a fan of this one too, and of the next two I am sure they are going to make!!! Bravo!!!

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
½

Nice one. Funny and tender, though I don't think Carell and Knightly are a good romantic pair, there's just no spark, and nobody should blame me if I look for such, as this movie is supposed to be not just comedy but drama as well! Okay, I rest my case, I merely want to earn some more of those cute RT badges!

Mr. Popper's Penguins
½

Playful and positive. Mr. Popper's Penguins, though predictable and a bit preposterous still manages to pull me in with its perky pageant of precious penguins!

The Ward
The Ward (2011)

I don't like it when Rotten Tomatoes critics are giving bad reviews to a really engaging, scary, and intelligent horror movie like The Ward. Sometimes it pays to still check it out if they rated one rather accurately and fairly!

I really enjoyed this movie, and I loved that I watched this with Azriela Dayne, my baby. I love you baby, happy birthday. XOXO

Emir

The Crazies
The Crazies (2010)
½

Fun, entertaining and a bit scary. Worth watching, made me curious about the original movie where it is based.

The Dead Sleep

I nosebled trying to catch this movie's drift... LOL

Stranger with My Face

A little like Mary Higgins Clark's mystery novel I'll Be Seeing You. Entertaining enough, actress Alexz Johnson is good.

Chain Letter
Chain Letter (2010)

Pure... uhmm, crap! I fell asleep in the middle, woke up towards the end hoping to find something good, but to no avail, I almost kicked the tv. I hate giving it even half a star, but I am after earning points in RT.

A Walk on the Moon

Not much of a feel good, but still a good movie. Very interesting to see a younger Diane Lane in a movie better than her Nights in Rodanthe!

A Month by the Lake
½

Vanessa Redgrave is in her most charming role here. And I hated and loved Uma Thurman's character here. Beautiful, funny and sexy.

Roman Holiday
½

Never thought the kids would keep me company seeing this on dvd. They laughed with me at the princess' misadventures, they must think Hepburn was one charming lady, a 'ringer' indeed, and so was Gregory Peck! The ending moved me.

Devil
Devil (2010)
½

Somehow it managed to engage me and the kids, just a little bit, watched it last night in dvd. I still hope M. Night Shyamalan can go back to doing good movies again.

The Healing
The Healing (2012)

After Feng Shui (Kris Aquino) 2004, finally another Philippine horror movie that actually scares!

The Hunger Games

Happy to know there are going to be several sequels till year 2015! One of the best SciFi Fantasy I have seen in years.

The Possession
½

Not as bad as Rotten Tomatoes reviewed. In fact, it is good, and scary especially if you are one like me who has kids. It is worth checking out, considering Sam Raimi co-produced it. :)

Bet Collector
½

This movie is very good. Gina Pareno is very good. The writer of the story is most of all brilliant. It is really about two 'collectors' traversing one neighborhood, 1. Amy, the bet collector and 2. Grim Reaper, the soul collector. The two collectors weren't yet meeting at first but somehow already knew about each other, and were perhaps observing each other's movements. The ending in its subtlety is so good it made the two finally come across each other with great impact, that only viewers who are numb (or dumb) wouldn't get affected and realize the movie's message, that Death when it awakens us we become Life. I could imagine what happened to Amy afterwards, life to her wouldn't have been the same anymore.

Born to Love You

First half is cute, the last half I took a photo of Snow's (our cat) behind.

The Lucky One

Unhappy to give this even half a star, I tried watching it five times, and five times I fell asleep in different parts of the movie. Heck, why do I even bother giving a review? I'll be honest it's just for the points I'm getting from RT!

Midnight Son
Midnight Son (2009)

This movie ROCKS!!! Frightening and gory even without much spray of blood and display of fangs.

Source Code
Source Code (2011)

Had a great time watching this with Tim and Yela. Jake is becoming our fave... the kids remember, and are fond of him in all his movies, from October Sky and Donnie Darko, Zodiac to Brothers, and Love and Other Drugs to Prince of Persia!

Final Destination 5

The best of the Final Destination movie series. It has left me breathless, and shaking, just what I need to get from such a horror flick. Can't wait to see what they got in Part 6. Just a hunch, they are going to concentrate on the story of Mr. Candyman Tony Todd (character Bludworth in the movie).
