One of the most important additions to horror of the last ten years.

A squeamish homophobes worst nightmare. "Cannibal" pretty much does exactly what it says on the tin, but with added extreme genital mutilation for good measure. The atmosphere is unnerving, as is the dubbing (although dialogue is thankfully sparse) and the gore FX are fantastic, the fact the film is based on the true case of Armin Meiwes is just the icing on the disturbing cake.

It was only a matter of time until trolling got its own movie. I was really quite surprised at how incredibly well-made "Troll Hunter" really is. Sure, the CGI isn't that great but some of the shots are incredible and the scenery is pretty breathtaking. I was also surprised at how boring it turned out to be. I've never been a fan of the whole "found footage" thing but although this did it better than most, its pacing and humor are far too erratic. Jespersen and the trolls are fantastic.

Kill List

Kill List

Yet another film that made plenty of "Best of 2011" lists and then didn't live up to the hype. "Kill List" is a strange one. A strange mix of "A Serbian Film" and "The Wicker Man", almost everything is masterfully executed, which makes the payoff all the more frustrating. All the cast do an amazing job and the chemistry between the three leads comes across as very natural and believable, the atmosphere and mood are unsettling, the sporadic violence is what "Drive" failed tried and failed to do and the blending of genres is seamless. The problem comes with the narrative. It probably requires a second watch but everything is far too ambiguous and the ending far too abrupt. Definitely needs to be seen at least once.
