Kia's Review of Pi

  • 18 months ago via Rotten Tomatoes

    Pi (1998)

A haunting, disturbed portrayal of a math genius who in pursuit of number patterns in the stock market to predict the outcomes, runs into numbers encoded in the Jewish Torah and pursues them to find out what they mean while discovering he is able to predict the outcomes even though his computer frequently runs into problems trying to produce Max's predictions and crashes as as a result. Filled with hallucinatory sequences and an air of paranoia, the film explores the mind of a man, who due to his total belief in numbers leads to his work being sought by both financial backer and a religious organization, but whose mind can only be put to rest by his own means. Pi was the debut of director Darren Aronofsky who carries the film's many atmospheric and speculative strengths into his later works.
