I don't think I'd ever put it among what I consider the best, but the scenery and the romance always take my breath away. Then when I'm no longer emotionally involved and I look back, it strikes me as a less-than-intelligent melodrama. I guess I'm just a sucker for it.

I'll probably watch The Great Lie, and I'm recording In a Lonely Place to keep.
The Loved One is one of my very favorite books, so I'm pretty excited about the movie, which I've never seen.
And, of course, I'm very excited about the Garbo movies. Everything on tomorrow night is good, but if I had to recommend one it would be Flesh and the Devil followed by A Woman of Affairs.

Well I saw The Magnificant Seven and enjoyed it, but it wasn't any where near as good as The Seven Samurai. B by me.
I Recommend: Wuthering Heights

I Hope To Watch: I wouldn't mind seeing the Garbo documentary. I saw the McQueen on months ago and really liked that. I'm not home for anything else really that evening.

The Garbo documentary was pretty disappointing. The stuff it did have was good, but it completely skipped over most her her post-Holylwood years, which is some of the most interesting stuff about her life, like her relationships with George Schlee, Mercedes De Acosta, and Cecil Beaton.
And The Loved One.....disappointing doesn't even being to describe it.

I figured someone else would want the tv tonight since I used it last night, so I was on the computer until about 8:00 (Baby Doll started here at 7), and when I went to the kitchen to get a drink, no one was in the family room. So I put in POrtrait of Jennie to pass the time until On the Waterfront came on, and I fell asleep, and just woke up, missing the first part of On the Waterfront. And I can't stand to not watch movies fromt he beginning, so I didn't even bother. :(
I'm not recording anything tonight though, because I still need to watch I Walked With a Zombie. I want to watch The Valley of Decision, Black Fury, and Riffraff tomorrow, so I need to clear up a tape.

I can't recommend/disrecommend anything today. Chances are I won't see anything either. Lost Season One is way too absorbing. There's so much foreshadowing that completly went over my head the first time around. Example, (I won't say what it's foreshadowing): A conversation between Jack and Kate and Jack just finished a long speech about a very scary moment for him.
"I would have ran for the door," Kate
"You're not running now," Jack. Kate glares right at him.
Sorry that's very off-topic, but it's one of many reasons I haven't seen any TV in the past couple of days.

I was hoping people wouldn't catch on until about October, at least. :( What can I say, I liked the connection between "recommend" and "disrecommend". It looked formal, except for the typo.
As for Gigi. I just found it rather familiar and bland. In contrast with Katie's comment, I say that Maurice Chevalier was rather annoying thoughout the whole thing. I also found it ironic that they kept marketing it as The First LL Musical Since My Fair Lady. So it's not a strong "disrecommend", but it's just C worthy.
Since I slept through Road to Singapore, I'll find a new word I can use for "disrecommend".

Wait, I got something. Gigi somehow beat Vertigo for Best Art Direction in that year's Academy Awards. How that happned I don't know. Yet that may tick off the Hitchcock junkies (Pat and I). Now that makes it -1Recommendation + 2Recommendation = Recommendation. Recommendation + -1Recommendation = 0, so that movie is now neutral. Your move Katie. :)

I don't see how the fact that it beat Vertigo for Art Direction hold any significance on how good of a movie it is. I think Vertigo is a lot better than Gigi. Doesn't change the fact that Gigi is a cute, fun, adorable, lighthearted film that's enojyable to watch, with some really fantastic musical numbers, beautiful costumes, and great performances.
Plus, the Turner Classic Movies version is the best I've seen. Even the most recent DVD release isn't as crisp and colorful.
The colorization work on Gigi also trumps Vertigo.

I was going with pre-movie bias. The problem with this kind of movie is, it pretty much does rely on enjoyment factor. It's a similar problem I face with this whole forum and Sahara (2005). Yes, that movie is very flawed, but I enjoyed myself all the way through. So I can't easily debate on why Sahara is a good movie, it's entertainment. The same applies for this movie, but in reverse for me.

Then you really shouldn't be disrecommending something when you realize it comes down to entertainment for you. Maybe if the movie was poorly made as well as not entertaining to you, but clearly, Gigi is not.
